In mammals, xanthine oxidase (E.C. 1.17.3.2) catalyzes the hydroxylation of a wide variety of heterocyclic substrates such as purines, pyrimidines, and pterins, in addition to aldehydes [1] as all-trans-retinaldehyde [2-5]. Here, we show that buttermilk xanthine oxidase was capable to oxidizing all-trans-retinol (t-ROL) to all-trans-retinaldehyde (t-RAL) that was successively oxidized to all-trans-retinoic acid (t-RA). A rise in the enzyme activity, when t-ROL-CRBP complex was assayed, with respect to the free t-ROL, was observed. Milk xanthine oxidase (xanthine: oxygen oxidoreductase; XO; EC 1.1.3.22) was found to catalyze the conversion of retinaldehyde to retinoic acid. The ability of XO to synthesize all trans-retinoic acid efficiently was assessed by its turnover number of 31.56 min-1, determined at pH 7.0 with 1 nM XO and all trans-retinaldehyde varying between 0.05 to 2 microM. The determination of both retinoid and purine content in milk was also considered in order to correlate their concentrations with kinetic parameters of retinaldehyde oxidase activity. Abstract Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been reported to alter cardiac myofibrillar function as well as myofibrillar enzymes such as myosin ATPase and creatine kinase (CK). To understand their precise mode and site of action in myofibrils, the effects of the xanthine/xanthine oxidase (X/XO) system or of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) have been studied in the presence and in the absence of phosphocreatine (PCr) in Triton X-100–treated cardiac fibers. Transmembrane anion transporters (anionophores) have potential for new modes of biological activity, including therapeutic applications. In particular they might replace the activity of defective anion channels in conditions such as cystic fibrosis. However, data on the biological effects of anionophores are scarce, and it remains uncertain whether such molecules are fundamentally toxic. The formal redox potential of the Yb(III,II) Couple at 0°C in 3.22 molal NaCl medium

Following our previous investigations on aqueous solutions of hypooxidized and iperoxidized species, we managed, by lowering the temperature of the solutions to 0 degrees C, to obtain, by electrochemical methods, Yb(II) and Yb(III) mixtures, enough stable to determine by a potentiometric method the formal redox potential of the Yb(IlI, II) couple. Its value, in a large range of total Ytterbium concentration, is -1233 +/- 3 mV against the molal hydrogen electrode in the 3.22 m NaCl medium.

<div><br></div><div><table><tr><td>We show that in a spin system of two magnetically inequivalent protons coupled to a heteronucleus such as 13C, an adiabatic magnetic field sweep, passing through zero field, transfers proton singlet order into magnetization of the coupled heteronucleus. This effect is potentially useful in parahydrogen-enhanced nuclear magnetic resonance, and is demonstrated on singlet-hyperpolarized [1-13C]maleic acid, which is prepared via the reaction between [1-13C]acetylene dicarboxylic acid and para-enriched hydrogen gas. Determination of hydrogen peroxide using glassy carbon and graphite/polyester composite electrodes modified by vanadium-doped zirconias

Abstract Synthetic monoclinic and tetragonal vanadium-doped zirconias (VZrO2) with vanadium loading ranging from 0.5 to 15 mol% are used to modify glassy carbon and graphite/polyester composite electrodes able to detect oxygen and hydrogen peroxide in neutral aqueous media. Electrodes modified by monoclinic VZrO2 decrease the overpotential for the reduction of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide in neutral and alkaline media and enhance their reduction currents with respect to unmodified carbon electrodes.
