Stable isotopes of water as a tool to study groundwater–seawater interactions in coastal south-eastern Sicily

Summary Stable isotopes of hydrogen (δD) and oxygen (δ 18 O) in groundwater, submarine springs and seawater collected in coastal south-eastern Sicily were investigated. While the spatial distribution of δ 18 O in groundwater showed that most of the heavy-isotope-depleted samples (from −5.7‰ to −6.9‰) were located in the higher portion of the Hyblean Mountains, more positive values (from −3.4‰ to −5.6‰) were found in the marginal areas. The isotope composition of submarine springs was characterized by significant variability (δ 18 O between −5.6‰ and +1.0‰ and δD between −30‰ and +5.0‰) reflecting seasonal variations and different seawater contributions. Water-level fluctuations in Mediterranean reservoirs: Setting a dewatering threshold as a management tool to improve water quality

Water-level fluctuations, often linked to seasonal climatic trends, are a natural phenomenon which occur in almost all aquatic ecosystems. In some climatic regions, as the Mediterranean one, they are particularly wide due to the occurrence of two well separated periods: the rainy winter and the almost completely dry summer. Precipitation is concentrated in the first period, whereas in the second strong evaporation losses take place. According to these climatic features, and to ensure a continuous supply of water throughout the year, man-made lakes store water during winter and are subjected to dewatering during summer to compensate the lack of precipitation. Distribution pattern of river blennies in the Júcar River basin (eastern Spain)

Salaria fluviatilis in the Jucar river basin was found only in the Jucar River itself, the tributaries Cabriel and Escalona, and the irrigation channel Acequia Real. Blenny density varied from 0.2 to 3.1 ind m -2 Sites with blennies had significantly lower coliform counts than those without blennies.

Stochastic assessment of climate impacts on hydrology and geomorphology of semiarid headwater basins using a physically based model

Atmospheric dispersion of volcanic CO 2 at Vulcano island

Abstract Intensive carbon dioxide emanations occur throughout the island of Vulcano (Aeolian Archipelago, north of Sicily, Italy). The main sources of CO 2 on the island are the hot fumaroles (∼500°C) of the northern ridge of the La Fossa crater, the fumaroles of the Baia di Levante and the emission areas spread out both on the slopes of the cone and in the nearby plain. The carbon dioxide from the soil can be considered as being emitted at air temperature. In this work, CO 2 concentrations in the air over the island are estimated by means of two numerical codes. Analyzing long-term soil erosion in a ridge-shaped persimmon plantation in eastern Spain by means of ISUM measurements

Abstract Graft unions of cultivated plants have been used as passive bio-indicators to assess long-term soil erosion rates. By taking complementary topographical measures in inter-row areas, soil erosion can be more accurately estimated as done with the Improved Stock Unearthing Method (ISUM) in vineyards. As vines are not the only plants that are grafted, ISUM could be also applied to other crops. The role of the aquifer in soil CO2 degassing in volcanic peripheral areas: A case study of Stromboli Island (Italy)

Abstract The peripheral area of Stromboli Island, Italy, named “Scari”, was continuously studied between January 2009 and December 2010. Data on soil CO 2 flux and the partial pressure of CO 2 (pCO 2 ) in equilibrium with the thermal aquifer linked to the magmatic system are presented. Soil CO 2 fluxes range from 20 to 370 g m − 2  d − 1 and have been strongly affected by soil temperature variations. Soil CO 2 flux data were filtered with respect to the soil temperature and the calculated values, called “residuals”, were considered to detect changes induced by the magmatic system. Summary Flash floods are recurrent events around the Mediterranean region. Extreme episodes activate hydro-geomorphic high-intensity processes with low frequency. In urban environments, the complexity becomes higher due to the existence of very quick-response runoff. However, immediate recovery works remove the urban marks. After a short time both the significance and magnitude of the hydro-geomorphic event become completely unrecognizable. Post-fire hydrological response and suspended sediment transport of a terraced Mediterranean catchment

In July 2013, a wildfire severely affected the western part of the island of Mallorca (Spain). During the first three post-fire hydrological years, when the window of disturbance tends to be more open, the hydrological and sediment delivery processes and dynamics were assessed in a representative catchment intensively shaped by terracing that covered 37% of its surface area.
