Sulfonation of Triphenylphosphines and Separation of Sulfonated Triphenylphosphines by Crystallization and Solvent Extraction

2007

Abstract The effect of sulfonation conditions on the formation of sulfonated triphenylphosphines and their separation from the post‐reaction mixture, containing concentrated sulphuric acid, was studied. The solvent extraction was found to be a suitable technique to separate sulfonated triphenylphosphines from concentrated sulphuric acid, and the purity and yield was higher than obtained by crystallization from various solvents. Tributyl phosphate was a suitable extractant. Sodium salts of sulfonated triphenylphosphines could then be recovered as precipitates by treating the organic phase with the sodium hydroxide solution and separation by crystallization. The solvent extraction simplified …

Proton, Hydroxide Ion, and Oxide Ion Affinities of Closed-Shell Oxides: Importance for the Hydration Reaction and Correlation to Electronic Structure

2019

Phenomenologically, the enthalpy of the dissociative water incorporation (hydration) of oxides is often found to be more favorable for more basic oxides. In the present work, we investigate proton,...

Improving the onset potential and Tafel slope determination of earth-abundant water oxidation electrocatalysts

2021

To date, a plethora of electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) have been proposed. For evaluating their electrocatalytic behavior the determination of the onset potential in each studied electrolyte is a key parameter. Nevertheless, this evaluation becomes particularly problematic for first- transition metal catalysts as well as by the use of electroactive collectors ( e.g. Ni foams) whose redox peaks overlap the onset potential. A usual solution to detect the onset potential requires the availabil- ity of in-situ mass spectrometric determination of the generated oxygen. In this work, we present fast and easier available cyclic voltammetry and coulovoltammetric responses to…

Unexpected Reaction of the Unsaturated Cluster Host and Catalyst [Pd3(3-CO)(dppm)3]2+ with the Hydroxide Ion: Spectroscopic and Kinetic Evidence of a…

2006

The title cluster, [Pd(3)(mu(3)-CO)(dppm)(3)](2+) (dppm=bis(diphenylphosphino)methane), reacts with one equivalent of hydroxide anions (OH(-)), from tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (Bu(4)NOH), to give the paramagnetic [Pd(3)(mu(3)-CO)(dppm)(3)](+) species. Reaction with another equivalent of OH(-) leads to the zero-valent compound [Pd(3)(mu(3)-CO)(dppm)(3)](0). From electron paramagnetic resonance analysis of the reaction medium using the spin-trap agent 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO), the 2-tetrahydrofuryl or methyl radicals, deriving from the tetrahydrofuran (THF) or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent, respectively, were detected. For both [Pd(3)(mu(3)-CO)(dppm)(3)](2+) and [Pd(3)(mu…

Glycine-functionalized copper(ii) hydroxide nanoparticles with high intrinsic superoxide dismutase activity

2017

Superoxide dismutases (SOD) are a group of enzymes that catalyze the dismutation of superoxide (O2−) radicals into molecular oxygen (O2) and H2O2 as a first line of defense against oxidative stress. Here, we show that glycine-functionalized copper(II) hydroxide nanoparticles (Gly-Cu(OH)2 NPs) are functional SOD mimics, whereas bulk Cu(OH)2 is insoluble in water and catalytically inactive. In contrast, Gly-Cu(OH)2 NPs form water-dispersible mesocrystals with a SOD-like activity that is larger than that of their natural CuZn enzyme counterpart. Based on this finding, we devised an application where Gly-Cu(OH)2 NPs were incorporated into cigarette filters. Cigarette smoke contains high concent…

Cytotoxicity, antibacterial and physicochemical properties of a new epoxy resin-based endodontic sealer containing calcium hydroxide

2019

Background This study evaluated the cytotoxicity, antibacterial and physicochemical properties of a new epoxy resin-based endodontic sealer containing calcium-hydroxide Sealer Plus. AH Plus was used as a reference for comparison. Material and Methods Cytotoxicity evaluation was performed according to ISO-10993-5 specifications using MTT assay to check the 3T3 cells viability at 1- to 4-week periods. Antibacterial activity was evaluated using a direct contact test against Enterococcus faecalis. Radiopacity, solubility and flow evaluations were performed according to ISO-6876/2012 specifications. Setting time was assessed following the ANSI/ADA-standard-n.57. The pH level was measured at 3,24…

Evidence for H2S gas as an intermediate species in the reaction mechanism of trapping hydrogen by cobalt disulfide

2011

Cobalt sulfide prepared by aqueous precipitation using Na2S and a Co(II) salt is known to trap hydrogen at room temperature and low pressure. The importance of oxidation of the primary CoS precipitate with atmospheric oxygen with respect to its efficiency as a hydrogen absorber is demonstrated. This stage of oxidation produces a mixture of two solid phases: a partially crystallized cobalt hydroxide Co(OH)2 and an amorphous cobalt sulfide CoS2 with a Co(OH)2/CoS2 molar ratio of 1 as predicted by thermodynamics. This biphasic product is probably the basic cobalt sulfide CoSOH considered in older and even more recent work. This product traps molecular hydrogen with a H2/Co molar ratio of 0.5 w…

Nanoscale etching of III-V semiconductors in acidic hydrogen peroxide solution: GaAs and InP, a striking contrast in surface chemistry

2019

In this study of nanoscale etching for state-of-the-art device technology, the importance of surface chemistry, in particular the nature of the surface oxide, is demonstrated for two III-V materials. Striking differences in etching kinetics were found for GaAs and InP in sulphuric and hydrochloric acidic solutions containing hydrogen peroxide. Under similar conditions, etching of GaAs was much faster, while the dependence of the etch rate on pH, and on H2O2 and acid concentrations also differed markedly for the two semiconductors. Surface analysis techniques provided information on the product layer present after etching: strongly non-stoichiometric porous (hydr)oxides on GaAs and a thin st…

Transformation synthesis of aluminosilicate SSZ-39 zeolite from ZSM-5 and beta zeolite

2019

Aluminosilicate SSZ-39 zeolite has been successfully prepared by transformation from ZSM-5 and beta zeolite in the presence of N,N-diethyl-cis-2,6-dimethylpiperidinium hydroxide (DMPOH) under hydrothermal conditions. Catalytic tests in the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR) show that the copper-exchanged products synthesized from the interzeolite transformation exhibit excellent catalytic performance.

One-stage H2 and CH4 and two-stage H2+ CH4 production from grass silage and from solid and liquid fractions of NaOH pre-treated grass silage

2009

Abstract In the present study, mesophilic CH4 production from grass silage in a one-stage process was compared with the combined thermophilic H2 and mesophilic CH4 production in a two-stage process. In addition, solid and liquid fractions separated from NaOH pre-treated grass silage were also used as substrates. Results showed that higher CH4 yield was obtained from grass silage in a two-stage process (467 ml g−1 volatile solids (VS)original) compared with a one-stage process (431 ml g−1 VSoriginal). Similarly, CH4 yield from solid fraction increased from 252 to 413 ml g−1 VSoriginal whereas CH4 yield from liquid fraction decreased from 82 to 60 ml g−1 VSoriginal in a two-stage compared to …
