Abstract In this paper we present in a first part the latest results of our group which are in relation with the study of DNA damages inflicted by low energy electrons (0-20 eV) in ultra-high vacuum as well as in air under atmospheric conditions. A short description of the drop-casting technique we developed to produce thin and nanometre-scaled DNA layers onto graphite sheets is given. Determination of gas temperature of high-frequency low-temperature electrodeless plasma using molecular spectra of hydrogen and hydroxyl-radical

Abstract In this study we determine gas temperature of He+H 2 , Ar+H 2 and Ne+H 2 high frequency electrodeless lamps using intensity distribution in rotational spectra of hydrogen molecule and hydroxyl radical. The measurement results show that OH rotational spectra can be successfully used for estimation of gas temperature of the high-frequency electrodeless lamps at very small amounts of hydrogen present in plasma. The analysis of the measurement results leads to the conclusion that in “pure” plasma the applied energy is used to heat plasma, while for the plasma with hydrogen addition the energy is used in chemical reactions.

Abstract Plasmid DNA in aerated aqueous solution is used as a probe to determine whose of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated after absorption of ultra-soft X-rays (USX) take part in biomolecule damage in the presence and in absence of Gold Nano-Particles (GNP) and specific scavengers. Citrate-coated GNPs with core sizes of 6, 10 and 25 nm are synthetized and characterized, especially in terms of plasmon band shift, ζ-potential and hydrodynamic radii (respectively 9, 21 and 30 nm). We confirm the radiosensitizing effect of GNP and show that the SSB number per plasmid increases when, for a same mass of gold element, the core size of the gold nanoparticles decreases. Abstract The radical addition of hydroxyl radical to ethene has been investigated using ab initio methods and density functional theory. The structure and energetics of reactants, prereaction complex, transition state structure and radical product have been optimized and vibrational frequencies have been calculated at the HF, MP2, B88, and B3LYP level using 6-31G* and 6-311G** basis sets. The energetics of the reaction is characterized within the MP2, DFT, G2, CBS, and BAC approaches. A facile electrosynthesis route for the preparation of polymer nanogels based on the in situ production of hydroxyl radicals is reported for the first time. Electro-Fenton process with continuous H2O2 electrogeneration and Fe2+ regeneration performs better than electro-oxidation with a boron-doped diamond or dimensionally stable anode for promoting crosslinking of poly(vinylpyrrolidone). Water disinfection is a crucial challenge for humanity. Approaches that are effective, cheap, environmentally friendly, and do not promote gene exchange between bacteria are urgently required. Strongly oxidizing radicals are highly promising to achieve this as they lead to bacterial activation at high efficiencies. Mutagenicity induced by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (BHP) or cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) in Salmonella typhimurium TA102 was effectively reduced by flavonols with 3',4'-hydroxyl groups such as fisetin, quercetin, rutin, isoquercitrin, hyperoxide, myricetin, myricitrin, robinetin, and to a lesser extent also by morin and kaempferol (ID50=0.25-1.05 micromol per plate). Abstract The photocatalytic oxidation of different benzene derivatives has been investigated in order to understand how the substituent group affects the selectivity to hydroxylated compounds. Experimental runs were performed by using TiO2 (Merck) aqueous suspensions at natural pH irradiated by near-UV light.
