The histological distinction between ductal hyperplasia of the breast, atypical ductal hyperplasia and ductal carcinoma in situ is difficult and subjective. To gain a better understanding of these lesions, we performed a comparative study comprising 20 cases of ductal hyperplasia without atypia, 20 cases of ductal hyperplasia with atypia, and 30 cases of ductal carcinoma in situ (well-, moderately- and poorly-differentiated), using quantitative techniques: image cytometry analysis, morphometry and DNA analysis, and DNA flow cytometry. Underestimation of atypical lobular hyperplasia and lobular carcinoma in situ at stereotaxic 11-gauge vacuum-assisted breast biopsy

The aims of this study are to determine the frequency of diagnosis of atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH) and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) at stereotaxic-guided 11-gauge vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (VABB) and to assess the rate of underestimation of these at subsequent surgical excision and follow-up. Moreover, we aimed to define clinical, radiological and histological features of nonpalpable lesions in core biopsies that predict the lesion upgrade. Avarol inhibits TNF-a generation and NF-kB activation in human cells and in animal models

Avarol is a marine sesquiterpenoid hydroquinone with interesting pharmacological properties including anti-inflammatory and antipsoriatic effects. In the present study we evaluated the pharmacological effect of avarol on some inflammatory parameters related to the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Avarol inhibited tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) generation in stimulated human monocytes (IC(50) 1 microM) and TNF-alpha-induced activation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB)-DNA binding in keratinocytes. Recombinant activated factor VII administration in a patient with congenital lack of factor VII undergoing laparoscopic hysterectomy: A case report

Highlights • Patients with lack of factor VIIa, suffering from abnormal uterine bleedings can be treated with laparoscopic hysterectomy. • Technique using bipolar coagulation and non-absorbable clips is safe and not time consuming. • Pre-operative loading with recombinant factor VIIa must be followed by prolonged supplementation in post-operative period. • We present suggested dosage and length of factor VIIa supplementation based on literature review and own experience.

Sirolimus treatment of severe PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome: case report and in vitro studies

Background: Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) hamartoma tumor syndrome (PHTS) is caused by germ line mutations in the PTEN gene. Symptoms include cancer pre- disposition, immune deviations, and lipomas/lipomatosis. No causal standard therapy is available. We describe a therapeutic attempt with the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor sirolimus for a PHTS patient suffering from thymus hyperplasia and lipomatosis. Objective: The purpose of this article is to describe and illustrate uncommon imaging evolutions of benign (i.e., cyst, hemangioma, focal nodular hyperplasia-like nodules, and hepatic angiomyolipoma) and malignant (i.e., HCC and non HCC malignancies) lesions in a cirrhotic liver. The content highlights relevant pathogenesis and imaging clues for proper differential diagnosis. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is an important endocrine metabolic regulator expressed in multiple tissues including liver and adipose tissue. Although highest levels of expression are in pancreas, little is known about the function of FGF21 in this tissue. In order to understand the physiology of FGF21 in the pancreas, we analyzed its expression and regulation in both acinar and islet tissues. We found that acinar tissue express 20-fold higher levels than that observed in islets.
