Variations in the size of focal nodular hyperplasia on magnetic resonance imaging

2013

Abstract Objective To evaluate the changes in the size of focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) during long-term magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) follow-up. Material and methods We reviewed 44 FNHs in 30 patients studied with MRI with at least two MRI studies at least 12 months apart. We measured the largest diameter of the lesion (in mm) in contrast-enhanced axial images and calculated the percentage of variation as the difference between the maximum diameter in the follow-up and the maximum diameter in the initial study. We defined significant variation in size as variation greater than 20%. We also analyzed predisposing hormonal factors. Results The mean interval between the two imaging studie…

Endometriose des Colon transversum

2002

HISTORY A 65-year-old woman with no complaints came to our hospital for a colonoscopy because of a family history of a colorectal carcinoma. Because of postmenopausal complaints she had been undergoing estrogen therapy for the past five years. INVESTIGATIONS Colonoscopy revealed a 2 x 2 cm polyp like structure with central tissue proliferation in the transverse colon. Neither chromoendoscopy with indigocarmine nor multiple biopsies indicated an adenomatous glandular proliferation. Miniendosonography revealed the image of a tumour located in the muscularis propria. DIAGNOSIS AND CLINICAL COURSE: As a malign process could not definitely be excluded, a colon segment resection was carried out b…

Thymus pathology observed in the MGTX trial

2012

The MGTX trial is the first prospective, randomized clinical trial that aims to evaluate the impact of extended transsternal thymectomy on myasthenic symptoms, prednisone requirements, and quality of life in patients with nonthymomatous, anti-acetylcholine receptor autoantibody-positive myasthenia gravis (MG). Here, we give an overview of the rationale of thymectomy and the standardized macroscopic and histopathological work-up of thymectomy specimens as fixed in MGTX standard operating procedures, including the grading of thymic lymphofollicular hyperplasia and the morphometric strategy to assess thymic involution.

Parotid lymphoepithelial cyst in non-HIV patient

2011

The lymphoepithelial cyst is a dysontogenic benign cyst originated from the epithelial remnant retained inside the lymphoid tissue during the embryogenesis that occurs in the lateral neck region and, less frequently, in the oral cavity and in the parotid gland. The parotid gland evolvement increased significantly after the HIV discovery and it is related to ductal obstruction phenomenon that goes along with a follicular hyperplasia in the periductal parotid lymph nodes. However, lymphoepithelial cysts are rare in non-HIV patients. Treatment options are controversial and might include cystic content aspiration, sclerosis-therapy, radiotherapy and surgery. Enucleation of the cyst while preser…

Mucus and MUC in asthma.

2005

Asthma is characterized by chronic airway inflammation and a mucus hypersecretory phenotype comprising excess mucus secretion, goblet cell hyperplasia and submucosal gland hypertrophy. This augmented mucus secretion has been relatively undervalued in asthma compared with airway inflammation. However, mucus plugging contributes to airflow limitation and airway hyperresponsiveness, and to morbidity and mortality in asthma. We review recent contributions to this field and therapeutic avenues to control mucus hypersecretion.A distinct mucus hypersecretory phenotype may present in asthma. Overexpression of MUC5AC, MUC5B and MUC2 have been described in asthma secretions, but identification of def…

Persistent Tachypnea of Infancy. Usual and Aberrant.

2016

Persistent tachypnea of infancy (PTI) is a specific clinical entity of undefined etiology comprising the two diseases neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy (NEHI) and pulmonary interstitial glycogenosis. The outcome of typical NEHI is favorable. The outcome may be different for patients without a typical NEHI presentation, and thus a lung biopsy to differentiate the diseases is indicated. To determine whether infants with the characteristic clinical presentation and computed tomographic (CT) imaging of NEHI (referred to as "usual PTI") have long-term outcome and biopsy findings similar to those of infants with an aberrant presentation and/or with additional localized minor CT findings (…

Laser Welding - Suitable for Vascular Anastomosis?

1994

Carotid arteries of 21 piglets were transsected and reanastomosed either by laser welding (Neodym:YAG laser) or by conventional suture anastomosis. Histological specimens of the anastomoses obtained 2 to 32 days after the operation showed less foreign body reaction and intimal hyperplasia after laser welding than after suturing. There was, however, no significant difference when comparing occurrence of thrombosis, patency rate, or growth of the anastomosis in growing animals. Neither our study nor a review of the literature of laser-assisted vascular anastomosis in microvessels and large arteries up to 5 mm diameter could establish a definite clinical application for laser welding in vascul…

Gingival hyperplasia as an early manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia. A retrospective review

2019

Background We study the prevalence of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) among patients with severe gingival enlargement. Material and Methods We retrospective reviewed the clinical records of patients with severe gingival enlargement, between 2011 and 2018. The Saxer and Mühlemann index were used to measure inflammation and gingival bleeding. The degree of dental mobility was measured by the Nyman and Lindhe technique. Results A correlation analysis was carried out to test whether there were any associations among the different variables. In the sample of 117 patients the mean gingival bleeding index was ≥3 and the degree of dental mobility ≥2.3. 1.7% of patients, with severe gingival hyperplasi…
