The high incidence of cancer recurrences and the frequent occurrence of multidrug resistance often stem from a poorly selective and inefficient antineoplastic therapy, responsible for the onset of undesired side effects as well. A combination of minimal-invasive approaches could thus be a useful strategy to surmount these shortcomings, achieving a safe and solid cancer therapy. Minimally invasive secondary cytoreduction plus HIPEC for recurrent ovarian cancer: a case series.

Objective To analyze the feasibility of laparoscopic/robotic secondary cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal intra-operative chemotherapy (SCS + HIPEC) in a retrospective series of isolated platinum sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer. Methods We retrospectively evaluated a consecutive series of ovarian cancer patients with isolated platinum sensitive relapse. Isolated relapse was defined as the presence of a single nodule, in a single anatomic site. Hyperthermia exhibits various direct cytocidal effects (Dickson, 1977; Overgaard, 1977; Suit, 1977). During heat treatment in vivo, several indirect mechanisms enhance the direct cell-killing capacity of hyperthermia. Therefore, the effective use of hyperthermia can overcome some of the well-known problems involved in modern radiation therapy at least in some malignant tumors.
