Epidemiology and pathophysiology of left ventricular abnormalities in chronic kidney disease: a review.

2010

Introduction Cardiovascular diseases are highly prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and represent the major hazard for mortality in this population. Anomalies of left ventricular (LV) structure and function are very frequent too among CKD patients, and show a negative impact on cardiovascular prognosis. Methods We searched PubMed for manuscripts regarding left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in CKD. Definition of LVH was different according to different studies. Results In patients with end-stage renal disease, the prevalence of LVH is higher than 70%. Studies in patients with less advanced CKD have reported increasing prevalence of LVH along with declining renal function…

The Activation Pattern of the Antioxidant Enzymes in the Right Ventricle of Rat in Response to Pressure Overload is of Heart Failure Type

2003

In the left ventricle subjected to pressure overload activity, the antioxidant enzymes increased at the hyperfunctional stage. During the transition to heart failure, these enzymes are down-regulated, oxidative stress increases, and apoptosis progresses. Maladaptative activation of the antioxidant enzymes at an early stage may contribute to the intrinsic vulnerability of right ventricle to pressure overload. The authors studied changes in expression and activity of the enzymes manganese and copper-zinc superoxide dismutases, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase in the right ventricle of rat following induction of pulmonary hypertension by injection of monocrotaline. Increase in the manganes…

Assessment of the cardiostimulant action of propionyl-L-carnitine on chronically volume-overloaded rat hearts.

1993

Chronic volume overload was induced in young rats of Wistar strain by surgical opening of the aorto-caval fistula. Three months later, during in vitro perfusion with exogenous palmitate, left ventricular function and energy turnover (QO2) of hypertrophied hearts were severely depressed. This seemed to be related to impaired long-chain fatty acid utilization, as reflected by decreased 14CO2 production from U-14C-palmitate and decreased tissue levels of L-carnitine. Another group of rats exposed to chronic volume overload was pretreated for 2 weeks before sacrifice with propionyl-L-carnitine (250 mg/kg/day), and the hearts were perfused with 1.2 mM palmitate and 10 mM propionyl-L-carnitine. I…

Intra-Articular Injection of Fructus Ligustri Lucidi Extract Attenuates Pain Behavior and Cartilage Degeneration in Mono-Iodoacetate Induced Osteoart…

2018

Fructus Ligustri Lucidi (FLL) has been widely used as a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for treating soreness and weakness of waist and knees. It has potential for treating OA owing to its kidney-tonifying activity with bone-strengthening effects, but there is so far no report of its anti-OA effect. This study established a rat OA model by intra-articular (IA) injection of mono-iodoacetate (1.5 mg) and weekly treated by IA administration of FLL at 100 μg/mL for 4 weeks. Thermal withdrawal latency, mechanical withdrawal threshold, and spontaneous activity were tested for evaluation of pain behavior, and histopathological (HE, SO, and ABH staining) and immunohistochemical (Col2, Col10, and…

Long-term effectiveness of agalsidase alfa enzyme replacement in Fabry disease: A Fabry Outcome Survey analysis

2015

Outcomes from 5 years of treatment with agalsidase alfa enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) for Fabry disease in patients enrolled in the Fabry Outcome Survey (FOS) were compared with published findings for untreated patients with Fabry disease. Data were extracted from FOS, a Shire-sponsored database, for comparison with data from three published studies. Outcomes evaluated were the annualized rate of change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and left ventricular mass indexed to height (LVMI) as well as time to and ages at a composite morbidity endpoint and at death. FOS data were extracted for 740 treated patients who were followed for a median of ~ 5 years. Compared with no trea…

Resistance Training with Blood Flow Restriction Compared to Traditional Resistance Training on Strength and Muscle Mass in Non-Active Older Adults: A…

2021

Low-intensity training with blood flow restriction (LI-BFR) has been suggested as an alternative to high-intensity resistance training for the improvement of strength and muscle mass, becoming advisable for individuals who cannot assume such a load. The systematic review aimed to determine the effectiveness of the LI-BFR compared to dynamic high-intensity resistance training on strength and muscle mass in non-active older adults. A systematic review was conducted according to the Cochrane Handbook and reportedly followed the PRISMA statement. MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science Core Collection, and Scopus databases were searched between September and October 2020. Two reviewers independently se…

The Ionic Hypothesis of Aging

1998

The clinical association of essential hypertension with metabolic abnormalities, such as hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, obesity, altered glucose tolerance and/or frank non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) has long been appreciated(1). Each of the above clinical conditions is extremely frequent in the elderly. The association of these different clinical states, that is also common at younger ages, has been termed “Syndrome X” and more recently “Generalized Cardiovascular-Metabolic Disease.”(2,3) Although several hypothesis have been proposed, including a primary role of hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance, the mechanism(s) of this linkage has not been established. This …

Distribution of type I and type II collagen gene expression during the development of human long bones

1990

The temporal and spatial gene expression of collagen type I and type II during the development of the human long bones was studied by the technique of in situ hybridization covering the period from the cartilagenous bone anlage to the formation of a regular growth plate in the newborn. Analysis of the early stages around the seventh week of gestation revealed for type II collagen a strong hybridization signal limited to the chondrogenic tissue. The surrounding connective tissue and the perichondrium showed weak type I collagen expression, while the zones of desmal ossification like the clavicle gave a strong signal. Beginning with the eighth week of gestation, type I collagen mRNA was detec…
