A New World Tribe in Caryl Phillips’s A Distant Shore
2012
Prefazione al romanzo di Jumoke Verissimo, Memoria e desiderio
2021
A well established and renowned poet residing in Canada, Jumoke Verissimo debuted with her first novel, A Small Silence, in 2019. The Preface to the Italian edition elucidates how in Verissimo's fictional account of a dissident intellectual released from prison after the end of Abacha's dictatorship, and in his friendship with a young woman studying at the local University, we find a portrait of today's Nigeria trying to survive its post-independence, post-colonial, post-dictatorship era.
Effect of interleukin-6 polymorphisms on human longevity: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
2008
Udgivelsesdato: 2009-Jan Several studies have assessed changes in frequency of -174 interleukin (IL)-6 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) with age. If IL-6 tracks with disability and age-related diseases, then there should be reduction, in the oldest old, of the frequency of homozygous GG subjects, who produce higher IL-6 levels. However, discordant results have been obtained. To explore the relationship between this polymorphism and longevity, we analyzed individual data on long-living subjects and controls from eight case-control studies conducted in Europeans, using meta-analysis. There was no significant difference in the IL-6 genotype between the oldest old and controls (Odds Ratio […
Taste receptor polymorphisms and longevity: a systematic review and meta-analysis
2020
AbstractBitter taste receptors (TAS2R) are involved in a variety of non-tasting physiological processes, including immune-inflammatory ones. Therefore, their genetic variations might influence various traits. In particular, in different populations of South Italy (Calabria, Cilento, and Sardinia), polymorphisms of TAS2R16 and TAS238 have been analysed in association with longevity with inconsistent results. A meta-analytic approach to quantitatively synthesize the possible effect of the previous variants and, possibly, to reconcile the inconsistencies has been used in the present paper. TAS2R38 variants in the Cilento population were also analysed for their possible association with longevi…
Meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies from the CHARGE consortium identifies common variants associated with carotid intima media thickness…
2011
Carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) and plaque determined by ultrasonography are established measures of subclinical atherosclerosis that each predicts future cardiovascular disease events. We conducted a meta-analysis of genome-wide association data in 31,211 participants of European ancestry from nine large studies in the setting of the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) Consortium. We then sought additional evidence to support our findings among 11,273 individuals using data from seven additional studies. In the combined meta-analysis, we identified three genomic regions associated with common carotid intima media thickness and two different regions a…
Is immunosenescence infectious?
2004
Abstract Herpes viruses are endemic. Once established, the virus is never eliminated but persists throughout life. The fraction of infected individuals gradually increases with age, such that the majority of elderly people are cytomegalovirus (CMV) + , Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) + and Varicella + . Clinically relevant reactivation of Varicella causes painful shingles; CMV reactivation can cause fatal pneumonia. Overt reactivation, even in the very elderly, occurs only in immunocompromised individuals; however, the necessity for maintaining immunity to these viruses is costly. We argue that this cost is not only reflected in the requirement for continuous immunosurveillance against these virus…
Reliability of genomic variants across different next-generation sequencing platforms and bioinformatic processing pipelines
2021
Abstract Background Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is the fundament of various studies, providing insights into questions from biology and medicine. Nevertheless, integrating data from different experimental backgrounds can introduce strong biases. In order to methodically investigate the magnitude of systematic errors in single nucleotide variant calls, we performed a cross-sectional observational study on a genomic cohort of 99 subjects each sequenced via (i) Illumina HiSeq X, (ii) Illumina HiSeq, and (iii) Complete Genomics and processed with the respective bioinformatic pipeline. We also repeated variant calling for the Illumina cohorts with GATK, which allowed us to investigate the e…
Die nächste Generation „atypischer” Antipsychotika: Der Beitrag der Positronenemissionstomographie
2003
Almost fifteen years of research with Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) have led to a profound understanding of the relationships between antipsychotic doses and plasma levels on the one hand and occupancy of (striatal) D 2 -like dopamine receptors on the other hand as well as with the associated clinical effects and side effects. Furthermore, with the development of clinically atypical" antipsychotics PET studies helped to generate hypotheses regarding the essential pharmacological properties of this heterogeneous class of drugs. Possible mechanisms of action include combined D 2 -/5-HT 2 antagonism, preferential mesolimbic binding, a…
Hydroxo Hydrido Complexes of Iron and Cobalt (Sn−Fe−Sn, Sn−Co−Sn): Probing Agostic Sn⋅⋅⋅H−M Interactions in Solution and in the Solid State
2000
Bis(toluene)iron 9 reacts with Lappert's stannylene [Sn[CH(SiMe3)2]2] (4) to form the paramagnetic bis-stannylene complex [[(eta6-toluene)Fe-Sn-[CH(SiMe3)2]2]2] (10). Compound 10 reacts with H2O to form the hydroxo hydrido complex [(eta6-C7H8)(mu-OH)(H)-Fe-[Sn[CH(SiMe3)2]2]2] (12) in high yield; its solid-state structure has been elucidated by X-ray and neutron diffraction analysis. In agreement with the 1H NMR results, 12 contains a hydridic ligand whose exact coordination geometry could be determined by neutron diffraction. The 1H and 119Sn NMR analysis of 12 suggested a multicenter Sn/Sn/H/Fe bonding interaction in solution, based on significantly large values of J(Sn,H,Fe) = 640+/-30 Hz…
Association between the PNPLA3 (rs738409 C>G) variant and hepatocellular carcinoma: Evidence from a meta-analysis of individual participant data
2014
The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is increasing in Western countries. Although several clinical factors have been identified, many individuals never develop HCC, suggesting a genetic susceptibility. However, to date, only a few single-nucleotide polymorphisms have been reproducibly shown to be linked to HCC onset. A variant (rs738409 C>G, encoding for p.I148M) in the PNPLA3 gene is associated with liver damage in chronic liver diseases. Interestingly, several studies have reported that the minor rs738409[G] allele is more represented in HCC cases in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and alcoholic liver disease (ALD). However, a significant association with HCC related to CHC has not b…
