Stroke subtypes and their possible implication in stroke prevention drug strategies
2014
Thrombotic strokes can affect large or small arteries in the brain. Drugs to prevent atherosclerosis complication such as thrombotic strokes, should be drugs able to prevent the accumulation of intravascular fat, reduce vascular proliferation, decrease blood pressure levels with the resulting shear stress, reduce platelet aggregation, and possibly partially or totally reverse carotid plaques. Any of the commonly used antihypertensive drugs lower the incidence of stroke, with larger reductions in BP resulting in larger reductions in risk. Experimental and clinical data suggest that reducing the activity of the renin-angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS) may have beneficial effects beyond the…
Binding properties and stability of the Ras-association domain of Rap1-GTP interacting adapter molecule (RIAM).
2012
The Rap1-GTP interacting adapter protein (RIAM) is an important protein in Rap1-mediated integrin activation. By binding to both Rap1 GTPase and talin, RIAM recruits talin to the cell membrane, thus facilitating talin-dependent integrin activation. In this article, we studied the role of the RIAM Ras-association (RA) and pleckstrin-homology (PH) domains in the interaction with Rap1. We found that the RA domain was sufficient for GTP-dependent interaction with Rap1B, and the addition of the PH domain did not change the binding affinity. We also detected GTP-independent interaction of Rap1B with the N-terminus of RIAM. In addition, we found that the PH domain stabilized the RA domain both in …
Antimicrobial Effects Of The Ethanolic Extracts And Essential Oils Of Tanacetum Vulgare L From Romania
2015
Abstract This paper investigates the antimicrobial action of the extracts and essential oil of wildgrowing Tanacetum vulgare L on: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacilus subtilis, using the diffusion disc method. The essential oils but also the ethanolic extracts tested exhibited moderate action on Staphilococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis and low action on E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The moderate antimicrobial activity is related to the amount of some chemical components of the essential oil of T. vulgare flos. Thus, this paper presents also the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the essential oils of T. vulgare harvested from two differ…
Dinosaur bonebed amber from an original swamp forest soil
2021
AbstractDinosaur bonebeds with amber content, yet scarce, offer a superior wealth and quality of data on ancient terrestrial ecosystems. However, the preserved palaeodiversity and/or taphonomic characteristics of these exceptional localities had hitherto limited their palaeobiological potential. Here we describe the amber from the Lower Cretaceous dinosaur bonebed of Ariño (Teruel, Spain) using a multidisciplinary approach. Amber is found in both a root layer with amber strictly in situ and a litter layer namely composed of aerial pieces unusually rich in bioinclusions, encompassing 11 insect orders, arachnids, and a few plant and vertebrate remains, including a feather. Additional palaeont…
Obels simbolis latvių liaudies dainose: nuo formulės iki ženklo
2006
Pats gausiausias ir ryškiausias latvių folkloro žanras – tai keturių eilučių posmai, vadinamieji klasikiniai ketureiliai. Tradicinių ketureilių visuma sudaro atskirą kalbos sistemos porūšį. Pavienių žodžių reikšmės čia išryškėja daugiausia viso ketureilio semantikos kontekste, per tematiniu požiūriu susijusias dainas arba visuose panašias formules turinčiuose tekstuose. Toks kupletas laikytinas pamatiniu latvių liaudies dainų tradicijos vienetu. Jis sudaro ir poetinių paralelizmų pagrindą, o šios konstrukcijos vaidina labai svarbų vaidmenį liaudies dainų poetikoje. Mokslinė dainų tekstų analizė atliekama ne tiktai pasitelkiant formulių teoriją, bet ir remiantis ženklo samprata bei atsižvelg…
Mechanisms of Resistance to Ceftolozane/Tazobactam in Pseudomonas aeruginosa : Results of the GERPA Multicenter Study
2020
ABSTRACT Resistance mechanisms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to ceftolozane/tazobactam (C/T) were assessed on a collection of 420 nonredundant strains nonsusceptible to ceftazidime (MIC > 8 μg/ml) and/or imipenem (>4 μg/ml), collected by 36 French hospital laboratories over a one-month period (the GERPA study). Rates of C/T resistance (MIC > 4/4 μg/ml) were equal to 10% in this population (42/420 strains), and 23.2% (26/112) among the isolates resistant to both ceftazidime and imipenem. A first group of 21 strains (50%) was found to harbor various extended-spectrum β-lactamases (1 OXA-14; 2 OXA-19; 1 OXA-35; 1 GES-9; and 3 PER-1), carbapenemases (2 GES-5; 1 IMP-8; and 8 VIM-2), or both (1 VIM-2…
La Magdalena oculta de Büchner y Herzog
2011
Searches for cosmic neutrino sources with ANTARES, KM3NeT and IceCube and time calibration of ANTARES
2020
Nickel induces intracellular calcium mobilization and pathophysiological responses in human cultured airway epithelial cells.
2009
Abstract Environmental exposure to nickel is associated to respiratory disorders and potential toxicity in the lung but molecular mechanisms remain incompletely explored. The extracellular Ca 2+ -sensing receptor (CaSR) is widely distributed and may be activated by divalent cations. In this study, we investigated the presence of CaSR in human cultured airway epithelial cells and its activation by nickel. Nickel transiently increased intracellular calcium (−log EC 50 = 4.67 ± 0.06) in A549 and human bronchial epithelial cells as measured by epifluorescence microscopy. Nickel (20 μM)-induced calcium responses were reduced after thapsigargin or ryanodine exposure but not by Ca 2+ -free medium…
Regulation of calcium signalling by docosahexaenoic acid in human T-cells: implication of CRAC channels
2000
Abstract We elucidated the role of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on the increases in free intracellular calcium concentrations, [Ca2+]i, in human (Jurkat) T-cell lines. DHA evoked an increase in [Ca2+]i in a dose-dependent manner in these cells. Anti-CD3 antibody, known to stimulate increases in Ca2+ from endoplasmic reticulum (ER) via the production of inositol trisphosphate, also evoked increases in [Ca2+]i in Jurkat T-cells. We also used thapsigargin which inhibits Ca2+-ATPase of the ER and, therefore, increases Ca2+ in the cytosol. Interestingly, addition of DHA during the thapsigargin-induced peak response exerted an additive effect on the increases in [Ca2+]i in human T-cells, indicating…
