Polyacanthoside A, a new oleanane-type triterpenoid saponin with cytotoxic effects from the leaves of Acacia polyacantha (Fabaceae)

2018

The chemical investigation of the leaves and stem bark of Acacia polyacantha (Fabaceae) led to the isolation of a new oleanane-type triterpenoid saponin named polyacanthoside A 1 together with fifteen known compounds. Their structures were established from spectral , mainly HRESIMS, 1D NMR and 2D NMR and by comparison with literature data. The cytotoxicity of compound 1 and the analogues 8 as well as doxorubicin was determined in a panel of 9 cancer cell lines including sensitive and drug resistant phenotypes. Unlike the analogue 8, compound 1 as well as doxorubicin displayed cytotoxic effects in all the 9 tested cancer cell lines with IC50 values ranged from 8.90 μM (towards CCRF-CEM leuke…

Arabinosylamine in Asymmetric Syntheses of Chiral Piperidine Alkaloids.

2004

The stereodifferentiating potential of arabinosyl aldimines was utilized in stereoselective syntheses of 2-substituted dehydropiperidinones and their further transformation to 2,6-cis-substituted piperidinones. The absolute configuration was proven by X-ray analysis and by the synthesis of the enantiomerically pure alkaloid (+)-dihydropinidine. The presented method offers the possibility to synthesize piperidine derivatives enantiomeric to those obtained by the application of the corresponding galactosylamine auxiliary.

Water residence time and the dynamics of toxic cyanobacteria

2012

SUMMARY 1. Climate change affects aquatic ecosystems differently depending on local conditions. In the Mediterranean region, predicted drier seasons could especially affect lake water residence time and in consequence cyanobacteria and cyanotoxin dynamics. 2. We carried out a 3-year study of a shallow, Mediterranean lake (Lake Albufera, Spain), to study the effects of water residence time and other drivers on the dynamics of harmful cyanobacteria and microcystin concentrations (MCYST). 3. Longer water residence time in dry years and dry seasons increased total cyanobacteria biomass, Microcystis aeruginosa populations and MCYST concentrations in the lake water and seston. Droughts increased …

Berberido aetnensis-Crataegion laciniatae, new orophilous pre-forestal alliance of the class Rhamno-Prunetea

2011

In this paper the results of a phytosociological study carried out on some aspects of shrub vegetation of forest margins are presented, investigated in the higher belt of the Madonie Mts. (Northern-Central Sicily), referred to the order Prunetalia spinosae (Rhamno-Prunetea). Through comparison with other known coenoses in the central- southern part of the Italian Peninsula and in Sicily – especially, the associations of Berberidion vulgaris and those of Pruno-Rubion ulmifolii – a coenological and phytogeographical autonomy has been made evident and has resulted in the recognition of a new alliance, described under the name Berberido aetnensis-Crataegion laciniatae Gianguzzi et al., all. nov…

WHY DIELS-ALDER REACTIONS ARE NON-CONCERTED PROCESSES

2014

ABSTRACT Two exhaustive topological analyses using the Electron Localisation Function (ELF) along the non-polar Diels-Alder reactions of 1,3-butadiene [J. Phys. Chem. A 107 , 6014 (2003)] and cyclopentadiene [Org. Biomol. Chem. 8 , 5495, (2010)] with ethylene established that the bonding changes along these reactions are non-concerted. Herein, the ELF bonding changes along the intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of 1-( hex-5-enyl)cyclohexa-1,3-diene is analysed. The geometrical restrictions imposed by the tether break the synchronicity in the single bond formation in this non-polar reaction. The present ELF topological analysis along this intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction supports the ear…

l-Arabinose Conformers Adsorption on Ruthenium Surfaces: A DFT Study

2012

Adsorption of 5 L-arabinose tautomers – one acyclic and four cyclic (α and β, pyranose and furanose) species – on a ruthenium surface was studied as a precursor-process of the, nowadays more and more, industrially important sugar catalytic hydrogenation on metal surfaces in water medium. The study was mostly referred to a 37-atom metal catalyst fragment, even though border-effects on the adsorption processes were also checked employing a 61-atom metal fragment. In order to figure out conformational effects on the title process the tautomer flexibility was, at first, investigated by the genetic-algorithm based code Balloon, considering the conformational spaces of the different aquo tautomer…

Amphibian survival compromised by long-term effects of chytrid fungus

2022

AbstractChytridiomycosis, the disease caused by the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), has been unambiguously implicated in the decline of amphibian populations worldwide. However, the impact of this devastating infectious disease can be difficult to gauge without empirical data on the population-level effects of Bd. Often, assessments of the amphibian chytridiomycosis panzootic are based primarily on expert opinions; as a result, declines in tropical areas are promptly attributed to Bd while its impact on temperate species not suffering from adult mass mortalities is frequently overlooked. Here, we investigated the survival probability in an amphibian species from a tempe…

Effectiveness of Preservative Treatments on Coloured Ruditic Building Stones

2009

:  The dark grey Breccia di Billiemi and the Ammonitico Rosso of Piana degli Albanesi, two coloured stones widely used in monuments both outdoor and indoor in Sicily, undergo significant decay as effect of weathering: colour change and development of surface microcracks which affect not only the chromatic aspect but also the state of aggregation. In a previous study (Fracture and Failure of Natural Building Stones, 2006, Springer, Dordrecht, The Netherlands: 329), such effects were successfully reproduced on laboratory samples by means of artificial accelerated weathering and the different response of veins and grains to the ageing agents was related to the microstructure of stones. In this…
