The climate change effect on the african monsoon region : evolution of the precipitation and atmospheric fields in the CMIP3 and CMIP5 simulations un…

2013

The fourth IPCC report in 2007 established the synthesis of previously published work onthe effects of climate change on global and regional scales. It shows in particular that no consensuscan be found with regard to the future of rainfall — and atmospheric dynamics- associatedwith region — African monsoon. This dissertation revisits this issue in the light of new dataand using an approach avoiding over-representation of the number of simulations available forone type of model and taking into account the diversity of models and their evolution in time :twenty general circulation models (GCMs) participating in the exercises CMIP3 (twelve GCMs)and CMIP5 (eight GCMs) under the A1B emissions sc…

Towards a new classification of Salvia s.l.: (re)establishing the genus Pleudia Raf.

2015

Salvia L. In its traditional circumscription is the largest genus within the mint family. To date, the magnitude of the task has rendered it difficult to provide a genus-wide revision based on morphological data. Current molecular investigations based on a dense taxon sampling representing the whole phenotypic diversity and distribution range of Salvia confirmed that the genus is polyphyletic. Salvia species fall in 4 distinct clades, although all of them, except Clade IV, also include non-Salvia genera. A taxonomic revision is thus urgently needed with two different approaches that have to be considered: (1) to include the 5 morphologically distinct non-Salvia genera in Salvia or (2) to sp…

Switchable assembly of stable, ordered molecular layers

1999

Bisamidines can be assembled on self-assembled monolayers of mercaptoalkanoic acids on gold to form stable and ordered but pH-switchable layers (see diagram). At basic pH the layers are stable and charge selective towards charged surfactants and plasma proteins. The system can potentially be used to reversibly introduce new surface properties for given applications that use one single substrate.

Enhanced Activity and Stereoselectivity of Polystyrene-Supported Proline-Based Organic Catalysts for Direct Asymmetric Aldol Reaction in Water

2009

Several polystyrene-supported proline dipeptides and a prolinamide derivative were prepared by thiol–ene coupling. These materials were used as catalysts for the direct asymmetric aldol reaction in water, and results compared with unsupported catalysts in water. Such an approach gave more active or stereoselective catalysts compared to the unsupported compounds, showing that our immobilization procedure may be useful to develop catalytic materials with enhanced performance. Moreover, these catalysts can be recovered and reused for at least nine times without loss of activity or can be easily regenerated when their activity has decreased. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Anaerobic removal of 1-methoxy-2-propanol under ambient temperature in an EGSB reactor

2015

Two laboratory-scale expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors were operated at 18 and 25 °C, respectively, for the treatment of synthetic wastewater composed of ethanol and 1-methoxy-2-propanol (M2P) in a mass ratio of 4:1. Reactors were operated first with continuous wastewater supply and after with discontinuous substrate supply (5 days a week, 16 h a day) to simulate shift working conditions. Under continuous wastewater supply chemical oxygen demand (COD), removal efficiency higher than 95 % was achieved at the end of the trial applying organic loading rates (OLR) of 29 and 43 kg COD m(-3) day(-1) at 18 and 25 °C; thus, corresponding to M2P OLR of 6.4 and 9.3 kg COD m(-3) day(-1), re…

Performance of interdigitated nanoelectrodes for electrochemical DNA biosensor.

2003

An electrochemical methodology for bio-molecule sensing using an array of well-defined nanostructures is presented. We describe the fabrication by e-beam lithography of nanoelectrodes consisting of a 100 micro m x 50 micro m area containing interdigitated electrodes of 100 nm in width and interelectrode distance of 200 nm. Sensitivity and response time of the nanoelectrodes are compared to the responses of macro- and microelectrodes. The specificity of the sensor is studied by modifying the gold electrodes with DNA. The technique enables to characterize both single and double-stranded DNA of 15 nucleotides. A special electrochemical cell is adapted to control the temperature and measure the…
