Necrophagous beetles utilize carrion, a highly nutritious resource that is susceptible to intense microbial competition, by treating it with antimicrobial anal and oral secretions. However, how this regulates the carcass microbiota remains unclear. Here, we show that carcasses prepared by the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides undergo significant changes in their microbial communities subsequent to their burial and ‘preparation’. Germinal matrix hemorrhage-intraventricular hemorrhage (GMH-IVH) is one of the CNS injuries affecting preterm infants occurring in about 15%-20% of subjects weighing less than 1500 g. Analysis of complement C3 activation products in human atherosclerotic lesions.

Abstract Cleavage of the complement C3 protein is essential for complement activation. Saline extracts of human atherosclerotic lesions were examined by various techniques for the presence of C3 cleavage fragments. Crossed intermediate gel immunoelectrophoresis revealed that native C3 was the predominate C3 protein in extracts and that the C3dg fragment was also detected. SDS-PAGE/ Western blot analyses of lesion extracts employing monoclonal antibodies directed at C3c and C3dg fragment determinants demonstrated molecular weight bands corresponding to the known molecular weights of all the physiologic C3 cleavage fragments, except Cab which is known to have a short half-life. Genome reduction is a general process that has been studied in numerous symbiotic bacteria associated with insects. We investigated the last stages of genome degradation in Blochmannia floridanus, a mutualistic bacterial endosymbiont of the ant Camponotus floridanus. We report that branching morphogenesis and the formation of a new epithelium from the mesenchyme in the embryonic kidney can be blocked by a monoclonal antibody reacting with a surface glycolipid, disialoganglioside G D3 .
