Washington, une ville mondiale ?
2001
Washington DC is rarely mentioned in the scientific literature on world cities. However, its influence on the world economy is obvious (World Bank, IMF, Federal Reserve). As a new immigration center, Washington has grown rapidly into an international city. It is suggested that the concept of global city must be re-examined to propose a more flexible definition.

Although the sci…

(De)constructing "America": the Case of Emir Kusturica's Arizona Dream (1993)
2010
International audience; By means of an analysis of Kusturica's only film about America, Arizona Dream, this article argues that while the United States offers a vision of a united society founded on diversity, it also represses, altering in the process both society and the landscape. National unity is consequently a dream – a dream the film suggests that has often been dreamed up by un-Americans. Filtered through Kusturica's own perceptions of America – and his position on the Balkan War (1991-2001) – the film seems to suggest sadness at the loss of a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural perspective. Through its representations of geography and ethnic diversity, and its dense network of filmic cita…
Art and Commitment in the British Music Hall in its Golden Age
2013
International audience; My own speciality is the British music-hall, especially its later period, after 1900. I like to see this form of popular entertainment as fitting into a series of stories: at least three storiesFirstly, as an industry, and as a repertoire of songs, it fits into the history of popular music, in the period before the domination of recorded or broadcast music, when live performance and sheet music were practically the only modes of distribution. It is a period when many aspects of today’s popular music were not present – there were no live recordings of songs to contrast with their studio versions, no post-production, and where singing along in a group, rather than othe…
Coumarin-Phosphine-Based Smart Probes for Tracking Biologically Relevant Metal Complexes: From Theoretical to Biological Investigations
2016
International audience; Ten metal-based complexes and associated ligands have been synthesized and characterized. One of the metal ligands is a coumarin-phosphine derivative, which displays tunable fluorescence properties. The fluorescence is quenched in the case of the free ligand and ruthenium and osmium complexes, whereas it is strong for the gold complexes and phosphonium derivatives. These trends were rationalized by theoretical calculations, which revealed non-radiative channels involving a dark state for the free ligands that is lower in energy than the emissive state and is responsible for the quenching of fluorescence. For the Ru-II and Os-II complexes, other non-radiative channels…
