Icarus and Daedalus in Toni Morrison's "Song of Solomon"

2012

In Song of Solomon Toni Morrison rewrites the legend of the Flying Africans and the Myth of Icarus to create her own Myth. Her depiction of the black hero’s search for identity has strong mythical overtones. Morrison rescues those elements of mythology black culture which are still relevant to blacks and fuses them with evident allusions to Greek mythology. She reinterprets old images and myths of flight, the main mythical motif in the story. Her Icarus engages on an archetypical journey to the South, to his family past, led by his Daedalic guide, on which he finally recovers his ancestral ability to fly. His flight signals a spiritual epiphany in the hero’s quest for self-definition in the…

Beta-decay of light nuclei close to the proton drip-line: 40Ti and 35Ca

1998

The s-decay of40Ti and35Ca have been studied at the LISE3 spectrometer at GANIL. The decay schemes were deduced from the observed s-delayed proton and γ emission of40Ti and35Ca into the ground and first excited states of39Ca and34Ar, respectively. The Gamow-Teller strength functionB(GT) of the40Ti s-decay extracted from the s-decay branching ratios and the precisely measured40Ti half-life, provides for the first time an experimental calibration of the neutrino detection efficiency for the ICARUS solar neutrino detector.

Rebuttal to “Comment on “Evidence of electrical activity on Titan drawn from the Schumann resonances sent by Huygens probe” by J.A. Morente, J.A. Por…

2009

Abstract Hamelin et al. criticize some conclusions of our paper [Morente, J.A., Porti, J.A., Salinas, A., Navarro, E.A., 2008. Icarus 195, 802–811]. This rebuttal is our response to their criticism. In our view, their comments are contradictory and not based on scientific argument. Our paper presents a comprehensible methodology for extracting weak resonances from the late-time response of systems with high losses and our conclusions are derived from and supported by this methodology, which was first checked using an analytical function and later with the data from a numerical simulation of Titan’s atmosphere. Conversely, the Comment of Hamelin et al. does not contain any mathematical proof…

Active-active and active-sterile neutrino oscillation solutions to the atmospheric neutrino anomaly

1998

We perform a fit to the full data set corresponding to 33.3 kt-yr of data of the Super-Kamiokande experiment as well as to all other experiments in order to compare the two most likely solutions to the atmospheric neutrino anomaly in terms of oscillations in the $\nu_\mu \to \nu_\tau$ and $\nu_\mu \to \nu_s$ channels. Using state-of-the-art atmospheric neutrino fluxes we have determined the allowed regions of oscillation parameters for both channels. We find that the $\Delta m^2$ values for the active-sterile oscillations (both for positive and negative $\Delta m^2$) are higher than for the $\nu_\mu \to \nu_\tau$ case, and that the increased Super-Kamiokande sample slightly favours $\nu_\mu…

First real–time detection of solar pp neutrinos by Borexino

2014

International audience; Solar neutrinos have been pivotal to the discovery of neutrino flavour oscillations and are a unique tool to probe the reactions that keep the Sun shine. Although most of solar neutrino components have been directly measured, the neutrinos emitted by the keystone pp reaction, in which two protons fuse to make a deuteron, have so far eluded direct detection. The Borexino experiment, an ultra-pure liquid scintillator detector running at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, has now filled the gap, providing the first direct real time measurement of pp neutrinos and of the solar neutrino luminosity.
