The cremation structures of the Roman Empire: anthracological data versus historical sources

ISSN: : 0210-3729; International audience; During the excavation of the Roman necropolis site Richeaume (Bouches-du-Rhone, Provence, France), cremation primary structures have been identified. A specific protocol consisting in collecting the entire sediment for sampling charred funeral remains on a grid of 20 to 40 cm, was systematically experimented and put into practice. The author attempts to interpret two paintings by Caspar David Friedrich with the motif of the hero turned with the back to the spectator. The former is one of his most renown works entitled Wanderer above the Sea of Fog also known as Wanderer Above the Mist, the latter, a slightly later work Woman at a Window – the example of a frequently used open widow motif in the iconography of Romanticism. The differences that decide on the meaning of these two canvases – as the author argues – is the gender of the created personas and the place from which they perceive the world.

Le casse dei sarcofagi romani, di tipo urbano e occidentale, sono di norma scolpite su tre lati: la fronte, che accoglie la rappresentazione principale, e i due fianchi, provvisti di raffigurazioni secondarie e di estensione più limitata. Questo studio si concentra sui fianchi, i quali hanno solitamente suscitato un interesse minore, analizzandone le caratteristiche più ricorrenti e proponendone una classificazione tipologica, sulla base del rapporto che di volta in volta potevano instaurare con le fronti.

Owing to a reassessment of the available sources on the sculptured decor of the façade of Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul cathedral in Nantes, it is possible to bring some precisions about the original state of the building. The tympanum of the central portal of this façade did not present, as is usually acknowledged, an original openwork design which was filled up in the 17th century when the organ loft was erected.
