The Epistemological Interpretation of Transcendental Idealism and Its Unavoidable Slide into Compatibilism

This paper consists in two major parts. In the first part, I explain and defend Kant’s explicit rejection of compatibilist theories of freedom in the Critique of Practical Reason. I do this by a careful analysis of some contemporary compatibilist theories. In the second major part, I explain how the epistemological interpretation of Kant’s transcendental idealism inevitably degenerates into a compatibilist version of freedom. The upshot will be that epistemological interpretations of transcendental idealism are not viable because of their connection with compatibilism, which Kant rejected.

$V$-filtrations in positive characteristic and test modules

Let $R$ be a ring essentially of finite type over an $F$-finite field. Given an ideal $\mathfrak{a}$ and a principal Cartier module $M$ we introduce the notion of a $V$-filtration of $M$ along $\mathfrak{a}$. If $M$ is $F$-regular then this coincides with the test module filtration. We also show that the associated graded induces a functor $Gr^{[0,1]}$ from Cartier crystals to Cartier crystals supported on $V(\mathfrak{a})$. This functor commutes with finite pushforwards for principal ideals and with pullbacks along essentially \'etale morphisms. Quality assurance of decision-making in conversations between professionals and non-professionals: identifying the presence of deliberative principles

The ideal of dialogue is at stake in professional conversations. The aim of this study is to develop an instrument that makes it possible to compare principles of deliberation with what actually takes place in professional conversations. The developed instrument is tested on one patient's conversation with his doctor about lifestyle changes, and meetings where pupils with learning disabilities and their parents discuss further schooling with school representatives. Although in need of refinement, the conclusion is that the instrument provides meaningful insight into how much each participant 'contributes' to the decision-making process and 'behaves' during the conversation.

The diamond partial order in rings

In this paper we introduce a new partial order on a ring, namely the diamond partial order. This order is an extension of a partial order defined in a matrix setting in [J.K. Baksalary and J. Hauke, A further algebraic version of Cochran's theorem and matrix partial orderings, Linear Algebra and its Applications, 127, 157--169, 1990]. We characterize the diamond partial order on rings and study its relationships with other partial orders known in the literature. We also analyze successors, predecessors and maximal elements under the diamond order.
Expecting the unexpected: Quantifying the persistence of unexpected hypersurfaces

If $X \subset \mathbb P^n$ is a reduced subscheme, we say that $X$ admits an unexpected hypersurface of degree $t$ for multiplicity $m$ if the imposition of having multiplicity $m$ at a general point $P$ fails to impose the expected number of conditions on the linear system of hypersurfaces of degree $t$ containing $X$. Conditions which either guarantee the occurrence of unexpected hypersurfaces, or which ensure that they cannot occur, are not well understand. We introduce new methods for studying unexpectedness, such as the use of generic initial ideals and partial elimination ideals to clarify when it can and when it cannot occur. Techniques in the Theory of Local Bifurcations: Cyclicity and Desingularization

A fundamental open question of the bifurcation theory of vector fields in dimension 2 is whether the number of locally bifurcating limit cycles in an analytic unfolding is bounded, or more precisely, whether any limit periodic set has finite cyclicity. In these notes we introduce several techniques for attacking this question: asymptotic expansion of return maps, ideal of coefficients, desingularization of parametrized families. Moreover, because of their practical interest, we present some partial results obtained by these techniques.
