2016
From ycar 1989 until today almost 40 various German minority press titles appeared in Poland. Since the individual periodicals are issucd in thc language of the minority or at least bilingual - in the minority language and in the language of the majority - they allow the membcrs of minorities the contact with one’s own mother tongue and thus form the basis for the preservation of their national identity. Also the knowledge of German history and culture makes it possible to create among the mcmbers of minorities the belief that they have certain common ground, which in turn creates a sense of togetherness. As the development of the identity begins already in childhood, the article shows whic…

Can Money buy Love? : The Impact of the Cohesion Policy of the European Union on European Identity
2019
Master's thesis Innovative governance and public management ME523 - University of Agder 2019 This Master thesis explores the relationship between Cohesion policies of the EU and European identity. After first describing the history and context of Cohesion policies of the EU, the literature on European identity studies is reviewed. This discussion develops an economic utilitarian argument, that citizens in Europe develop their identification with the EU partly on rational considerations, and that the added quality of life provided by investments of the EU would positively influence their European identity. This effect is expected to be different throughout European regions. The hypothesesare …

2008
This thesis examines the way in which the multiple cultures and identities that people are likely to summon up during an encounter influence the nature of their social interactions. It draws on the epistemological heritage of symbolic interactionism, rather than that of cross-cultural psychology, thus focusing less on the impact of (national) cultural differences on the way that we communicate, than on the intersubjective process that consists in negotiating common grounds for attributing meaning, during a multicultural encounter (semiopragmatics of communication). By analysing a corpus of interactions observed between members of the European Students' Forum (AEGEE), the study underlines th…

Language students and emerging identities
2012
The aim of our article is to study written narratives as a way of expressing emerging identities as second language (L2) users. We compare narratives written by Finnish students of Swedish during their first semester (24 essays) with data collected after the third year of study (9 essays), thereby trying to figure out how the university context has affected the development of the students as L2 users. L2 learning is regarded as a complex project entailing constant identity formation as a plurilingual subject. We see identity as a process, as something flexible, hybrid and multifaceted. Identity evolves in participation and it always includes a temporal dimension. The language learning proce…
