La Guerra Civil española fue un tema prohibido de forma tácita en el Hollywood regulado por la autocensura de la Oficina Hays y la PCA. Como consecuencia, las productoras cinematográficas norteamericanas sólo realizaron tres films sobre la contienda mientras se desarrolló (1936-1939). With a focus on Anthony Pagden, this section delves into the conquest of Americas, and explains how the manipulation of the concept of hospitality legitimated the subsequent dispossession of aboriginal lands. In part, this was because Spain colonized this continent as Rome did Europe, but, and most important, hospitality played a vital role subordinating the indigenous to European archetype, endorsing and granting legitimacy to Spain’s rule over this New World. In so doing, hospitality not only accompanied the ideological discourse of nationhood, but free transit became the touchstone of the West.

Work on bilinguals who act as family interpreters, while not focused particularly on the development of translation and interpreting abilities, contributes to our understanding of life experiences of the individuals who begin to interpret early in their lives (Valdés and Angelelli 2003). In this article, we examine the hierarchization of international students by bringing together perspectives of linguistic legitimacy and language ideologies. Our data stems from 26 accent reduction (AR) or accent modification (AM) course descriptions and websites from US universities. Based on their analysis, we discuss the socio-political implications of the phenomenon of these courses for international students and the ways in which language-based, particularly accent-based, arguments are used to create or reinforce different categories of students.
