Traducción e ideología en Legiones y Falanges/Legioni e Falangi
2019
This paper aims to demonstrate the link between the press and the diffusion of an ideology through the practice of translation, as the discursive product of a complex communicative situation, conditioned by the contexts of the author, the translator and the recipient of the translation given that the context determines the identity of the locutors, a translation always reflects an ideology, a “socially shared belief system” by the members of a “collective of social actors” (van dijk, 2005: 10) This paper will explore how the translator selects the discursive substance according to the ideology of the elites of the totalitarian power, who exploit discourse as an instrument to influence the b…
Legiones y Falanges: construcción lingüístico-discursiva del enemigo
2017
The press, in addition to reflecting a “vocation of information “, performs a series of social functions, among which the formation of citizens and of critical recipients of mediatic discourse stands out. Yet, especially in some socio-political contexts, the press can be a vehicle for a certain type of ideology, becoming an instrument to orient the recipient or, in extreme cases, manipulate them, in order to justify or reinforce the image of a dominant ideological group. In this sense, the magazine Legiones y Falanges (1940-43) is exemplary, since, with a clearly populist discourse, it aims to extol the ideological foundations of Franco’s dictatorship. In other words, the main objective of …
Binds of Professionalism: Attachment in Australian and Finnish Early Years Policy
2016
Attachment theory is often referenced in psychology, social work and early childhood care and education, and is ubiquitous in popular publications directed to parents, carers and educators of young children. It is considered as a ‘grand theory’ that explains “the growth of social relationships from infants’ experiences with their caregivers and the consequent social preference called attachment” (Mercer, 2011, p. 26). In this chapter, we understand attachment theory as a discourse and as part of the ‘psy-complex’, “the sprawling speculative and regulative network of theories and practices that constitute psychology” (Parker, 2002, p. 199). We focus on the operation of ‘attachment discourses…

The 1st black president or a combative 72-year-old war hero? : Representations of the 2008 US presidential candidates in two American newspapers
2009
The practices of representation : a comparison of Afghan women’s identity in development policy magazines
2009
Kandidaatintutkielmani tarkoituksena on tutkia afgaaninaisten representointia kehityspoliittisissa lehdissä. Erityisesti tarkastelen identiteettien rakentamisen kielellisiä keinoja ja niihin liittyviä motiiveja. Tutkimus perustuu kriittiseen diskurssintutkimukseen ja näkemykseen kielestä sosiaalisena käytäntönä. Työssäni analysoinkin tapoja kuvata afgaaninaisten identiteettiä ja Afganistanin todellisuutta kehityspoliittisten tavoitteiden rinnalla. Vertailen kahden artikkelin tapaa kuvata naisia suhteessa esillä oleviin valtasuhteisiin ja kehitystavoitteisiin. Kuvatessaan afgaaninaisia artikkelit kuitenkin rakentavat samalla länsimaista identiteettiä, sillä kehityskeskustelussa peilataan ka…
The 18th-century traditions of representation in a new age of revolution : History politics in the Swedish and Finnish parliaments, 1917−1919
2014
What happened to shared historical experiences in the discursive processes of constitutional reform in Sweden and Finland? This article examines the use of 18th-century history in early 20th-century politics. Building on a long-term survey of Swedish and Finnish estate and parliamentary debates, it analyses the political implications of differing national historiographies in the two successor states of the 18th-century Swedish realm, focusing on how the ancient past and collective (and often selective) memories of the Age of Absolutism, the Age of Liberty and the Gustavian Age were used by parliamentarians in constitutional debates. The analysis demonstrates how the Finnish polity continued…
Corruption and Hosophobia
2012
This paper discusses the relationship between corruption and purity. It draws on resesarch on corruption in political science and research on hosophobia (fear of the impure) in organization studies. The paper presents a theory of corruption based on failure of separation between the public and the private, and discusses rules of separation, which are crucial for upholding the illusion of public purity. However, this theory of corruption is complemented by the concept of hosophobia to show how organizations have dual relationship to corruption. Drawing on two Swedish cases, the paper intends to show hosophobia in the everyday functioning of and organization, and how occasional cleansing proc…

The Translation of Sex-Related Language: The Danger(s) of Self-Censorship(s)1
2009
While censorship is an external constraint on what we can publish or (re)write, self-censorship is an individual ethical struggle between self and context. In all historical circumstances, translators tend to produce rewritings which are ‘acceptable’ from both social and personal perspectives. The translation of swearwords and sex-related language is a case in point, which very often depends on historical and political circumstances, and is also an area of personal struggle, of ethical/moral dissent, of religious/ideological controversies. In this paper we analyse the translation of the lexeme fuck into Spanish and Catalan. We have chosen two novels by Helen Fielding—Bridget Jones’s Diary (…
