Psycholinguistic norms for 320 fixed expressions (idioms and proverbs) in French

International audience; We provide psycholinguistic norms for a new set of 160 French idiomatic expressions and 160 proverbs: knowledge, predictability, literality, compositionality, subjective and objective frequency, familiarity, age of acquisition (AoA), and length. Different analyses (reliability, descriptive statistics, correlations) performed on the norms are reported and discussed. The norms can be downloaded as supplemental material.

Abstract It has been suggested that figurative language, which includes idioms, is controlled by the right hemisphere. We tested the right hemisphere hypothesis by using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to transiently disrupt the function of the frontal and temporal areas of the right versus left hemisphere in a group of normal participants involved in a task of opaque idiom versus literal sentence comprehension. The Language of Quakers: idioms, words and abbreviations

The paper examines some of the words and expressions that have distinguished the members of the Quaker movement and helped to establish their religious identity. The Quaker lexicon has not remained unaltered in the course of three centuries. As is typical of most religious movements, also the Quakers have continually been adapting to social and cultural changes. This explains the existence of four relatively recent glossaries that account for the Quaker terms used in the twentieth century. The paper pays particular attention to "One Explorer's Glossary of Quaker Terms" by Warren Sylvester Smith (1985).
