Towards sustainable coexistence: People and wild mammals in Baluran National Park, Indonesia
2018
Abstract The paper offers a critical discussion of resource use in a national park, Baluran, in Indonesia. In general, an increasing accept of the need for livelihood security, also for people living in or near natural conservation areas, are challenging traditional systems of national park governance. Finding ways to balance the needs of local populations against the necessity to secure biodiversity and environmental sustainability becomes important, and the main question in our research is how to accommodate an existing society in Baluran without a further negative impact on endangered mammals. Based on common pool resource management and co-management theories and thorough empirical inve…
Subsidizing private childcare in a universal regime
2023
AbstractAll families in Finland have the freedom to choose between subsidized home care, universal public childcare, and private childcare. We study the impact of the introduction of private childcare subsidies in Finland. Private childcare subsidies have causal effects on take-up but no impact on home care or employment among women with small children. Instead, private services seem to crowd out public childcare. Private services have a socioeconomic gradient by mother’s education that steepens when the subsidy increases. Families’ preferences between home care, public childcare, and private childcare do not explain the result.
Effects of the European Monetary Union on High-Technology Exports
2021
AbstractOur study estimates the effects of the European Monetary Union (EMU) on high-technology (HT) export and assesses the potential knowledge spillovers of such trade. Irrespective of the importance of the HT trade channel, none of the previous studies in the literature focus on the effects of a common currency on HT trade. Increasing trade in the HT sector may lead to more efficient use of resources and help countries to move towards a knowledge-based economy. Moreover, it may lead to higher overall growth. After considering multilateral resistances, pair fixed effects and bias correction in the preferred (three-way bias-corrected) model, EMU membership becomes negative and statisticall…
Bērnu uzvedības problēmu un vecāku audzinošās uzvedības izmaiņas pēc dalības modificētajā Multimodālās agrīnās intervences programmā STOP 4-7
2022
Compensation of missing wedge effects with sequential statistical reconstruction in electron tomography.
2014
Electron tomography (ET) of biological samples is used to study the organization and the structure of the whole cell and subcellular complexes in great detail. However, projections cannot be acquired over full tilt angle range with biological samples in electron microscopy. ET image reconstruction can be considered an ill-posed problem because of this missing information. This results in artifacts, seen as the loss of three-dimensional (3D) resolution in the reconstructed images. The goal of this study was to achieve isotropic resolution with a statistical reconstruction method, sequential maximum a posteriori expectation maximization (sMAP-EM), using no prior morphological knowledge about …
The role of community-based knowledge and local institutions in managing landslides on the slopes of Mount Elgon, Uganda
2015
The paper explores the degree to which community-based knowledge (CBK) and local institutions can be effective for disaster preparedness and management, based on a study carried out in Nametsi Parish, located on the slopes of Mount Elgon, in eastern Uganda. The study area has experienced innumerable landslides since 1933. Whereas a few of the landslides have not been disastrous, several others have had far-reaching effects on the livelihoods of people living in the area. This is attributed partly to the geographical setting, which makes the area difficult to access, and partly to socio-economic factors such as a high population growth rate and widespread poverty. Despite these aspects of vu…
How communities' perceptions of disasters influence disaster response: managing landslides on Mount Elgon, Uganda
2014
The aim of this paper is to assess the role of people's perception in disaster management. It is based on a study carried out along the slopes of Mount Elgon in Eastern Uganda. People living in the study area have experienced a number of landslides, but the landslide in 2010 had the most far-reaching effects on community livelihoods and resulted in a major setback to development efforts in the area. Experiences of landslides have enabled the local people to develop a number of interpretations of the causes and effects of the phenomena. The study revealed that community members did not share uniform perceptions. Whereas some members advanced technical or physical explanations for the 2010 di…
Victims of family violence identified in emergency care : comparisons of mental health and somatic diagnoses with other victims of interpersonal viol…
2019
Family violence is a global health problem incurring significant costs to both individuals and health care systems. However, family violence as a cause of trauma and other health issues is often unidentified in patients attending emergency care. Better understanding of the risk factors associated with family violence could improve the identification and treatment of victimized patients in health care settings. Little longitudinal research exists on the mental and somatic health of family violence victims currently identified in EDs and little is known about how victims of family violence differ from other help-seeking victims of interpersonal violence. A total of 345 patients were identifie…
Pašcieņas saistība ar emocionālo empātiju pieaugušajiem
2022
Datu ievākšanai tika izmantotas divas aptaujas – Rozenberga pašcieņas aptauja (Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Rosenberg, 1965; aptauju Latvijā adaptējusi A.Miltuze, 1996) un Emocionālās empātijas aptauja (The Questionnaire Measure of Emotional Empathy, Mehrabian & Epstein, 1972; aptauju Latvijā adaptējusi J.Ļubenko, 2005). Pētījumā iegūtie rezultāti liecina par to, ka pastāv statistiski nozīmīga negatīva saistība starp pašcieņu un emocionālo empātiju. Pieaugot pašcieņas līm…
