Gaming for health across various areas of life
2019
Lack of physical activity is mostly addressed by implementing programs to promote physical activity but seeing as the major cause for physical inactivity is that of technology. Few studies used the approach to use the very barrier as s mean to try and educate and breed good habits. This paper outlines the design and development of a project that will us various environments, home, gym and outdoors to promote physical activity by means of technology and more specifically games. peerReviewed
Voimaharjoittelun vaikutukset dynaamiseen ja staattiseen tasapainoon nuorilla ja ikääntyneillä
2017

A Polygenic Risk Score for Hand Grip Strength Predicts Muscle Strength and Proximal and Distal Functional Outcomes among Older Women
2022
Purpose Hand grip strength (HGS) is a widely used indicator of overall muscle strength and general health. We computed a polygenic risk score (PRS) for HGS, and examined, whether it predicted muscle strength, functional capacity and disability outcomes. Methods Genome-wide association study summary statistics for HGS from the Pan-UK Biobank was utilized. PRSs were calculated in the Finnish Twin Study on Aging (N = 429 women, 63–76 years). Strength tests included HGS, isometric knee extension, and ankle plantar flexion strength. Functional capacity was examined with the Timed Up and Go, six-minute and 10-meter walk tests, and dual-task tests. Disabilities in the basic (ADL) and instrumental …

Effect of 12-month supervised, home-based physical exercise on functioning among persons with signs of frailty : Randomized Controlled Trial
2021
Objectives To investigate the effects of a 12-month home-based exercise program on functioning and falls among persons with signs of frailty. Design A randomized controlled trial with a 1:1 allocation Setting Home-based Participants Home-dwelling persons aged ≥65 years meeting at least one frailty phenotype criteria (n=300). Intervention 12-month, individually tailored, progressive and physiotherapist-supervised, physical exercise twice a week (n=150) vs. usual care (n=149). Main outcome Measures Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), handgrip strength, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), and self-reported falls and physical activity (o…
Effects of aging and training on sprint performance, muscle structure and contractile function in athletes
2009
Cross-sectional studies were conducted to examine sprint running, anaerobic energy production and muscle properties in male sprinters aged 17-88 years. In addition, a 20-week training intervention was carried out to determine whether older runners can further improve their neuromuscular and performance characteristics by a greater emphasis on strength training. With age, sprint performance declined gradually (5-6%/decade). The slowing of maximum speed was characterized by a reduction in stride length and an increase in contact time along with lower ground reaction forces (GRF) and smaller leg and vertical stiffness during the contact phase. Stride frequency showed small decline while swing …
