Manual segmentation qualification platform for the EADC-ADNI harmonized protocol for hippocampal segmentation project

2015

The use of hippocampal volumetry as a biomarker for Alzheimer's disease (AD) requires that tracers from different laboratories comply with the same segmentation method. Here we present a platform for training and qualifying new tracers to perform the manual segmentation of the hippocampus on magnetic resonance images (MRI) following the European Alzheimer's Disease Consortium and Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (EADC-ADNI) Harmonized Protocol (HarP). Our objective was to demonstrate that the training process embedded in the platform leads to increased compliance and qualification with the HarP.Thirteen new tracers' segmentations were compared with benchmark images with respect t…

Identifying the primary site of origin of MRI brain metastases from lung and breast cancer following a 2D radiomics approach

2017

Detection of brain metastases in patients with undiagnosed primary cancer is unusual but still an existing phenomenon. In these cases, identifying the cancer site of origin is non-feasible by visual examination of magnetic resonance (MR) images. Recently, radiomics has been proposed to analyze differences among classes of visually imperceptible imaging characteristics. In this study we analyzed 46 T1-weighted MR images of brain metastases from 29 patients: 29 of lung and 17 of breast origin. A total of 43 radiomics texture features were extracted from the metastatic lesions. Support vector machine (SVM) and k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) classifiers were implemented to evaluate the classificati…

2015

Background Accurate evaluation of immunostained histological images is required for reproducible research in many different areas and forms the basis of many clinical decisions. The quality and efficiency of histopathological evaluation is limited by the information content of a histological image, which is primarily encoded as perceivable contrast differences between objects in the image. However, the colors of chromogen and counterstain used for histological samples are not always optimally distinguishable, even under optimal conditions. Methods and Results In this study, we present a method to extract the bivariate color map inherent in a given histological image and to retrospectively o…

Characterization of a Computerized Assay for Rapid and Easy Determination of Leukocyte Adhesion to Endothelial Cells

2005

We report on a facile and rapid computerized in-vitro assay for the quantification of leukocyte adhesion to endothelial cells under static conditions using bovine polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) or human leukaemic Mono Mac 6 cells (MM6) and bovine aorta endothelial cells (BAEC). Images of leukocytes adherent to BAEC monolayers grown in microtiter plates were obtained by a digital camera attached to a conventional microscope and transferred to the public domain NIH ImageJ program for analysis. Using individually adapted program routines adherent leukocytes are easily discriminated and reproducibly quantified. The results obtained with our assay correspond to previous findings and demonst…

A simplified method to quantitate atherosclerosis in the rabbit aorta.

2001

A simple method to quantitatively evaluate atherosclerosis in the rabbit aorta by measuring macroscopic lesion areas (%) was attempted in the present study. Ten female New Zealand white rabbits were fed on a cholesterol-rich diet (5/1000 g of food) during 4 months. Five of them were oophorectomized at the beginning and all were sacrificed at the end. Total levels of cholesterol increased from 50.7+/-14.7 mg/dl to 782.8+/-296.0. No significant differences were observed between oophorectomized and intact rabbits. At 4 months, the cholesterol-rich diet caused in both, intact and oophorectomized rabbits, atherosclerotic lesions affecting 17 and 46% of the aortic surface, respectively. This meth…

Computer-Assisted Classification Patterns in Autoimmune Diagnostics: The AIDA Project.

2016

International audience; Antinuclear antibodies (ANAs) are significant biomarkers in the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases in humans, done by mean of Indirect ImmunoFluorescence (IIF) method, and performed by analyzing patterns and fluorescence intensity. This paper introduces the AIDA Project (autoimmunity: diagnosis assisted by computer) developed in the framework of an Italy-Tunisia cross-border cooperation and its preliminary results. A database of interpreted IIF images is being collected through the exchange of images and double reporting and a Gold Standard database, containing around 1000 double reported images, has been settled. The Gold Standard database is used for optimization of …

Clinical evaluation of melanomas and common nevi by spectral imaging

2012

A clinical trial on multi-spectral imaging of malignant and non-malignant skin pathologies comprising 17 melanomas and 65 pigmented common nevi was performed. Optical density data of skin pathologies were obtained in the spectral range 450-950 nm using the multispectral camera Nuance EX. An image parameter and maps capable of distinguishing melanoma from pigmented nevi were proposed. The diagnostic criterion is based on skin optical density differences at three fixed wavelengths: 540nm, 650nm and 950nm. The sensitivity and specificity of this method were estimated to be 94% and 89%, respectively. The proposed methodology and potential clinical applications are discussed.

Development and Practical Use of a Medical Vocabulary-Thesaurus-Dictionary for Patient Empowerment

2018

Health empowerment can be obtained through an informative and educational intervention to increase one's ability to think critically and act autonomously. Medical texts are usually written by professionals and can be difficulty understood by non experts who do not have the same skills and vocabularies. Thus, it would be desirable to have an online medical vocabulary-thesaurus-dictionary that can help a non expert to easily find the consumer equivalent of medical (technical) terms and additional consumer information. To this end, we have developed an online multilingual medical vocabulary-thesaurus-dictionary by interconnecting different online sources, i.e., medical vocabularies to create a…

WiseNET : an indoor multi-camera multi-space dataset with contextual information and annotations for people detection and tracking

2019

Nowadays, camera networks are part of our every-day life environments, consequently, they represent a massive source of information for monitoring human activities and to propose new services to the building users. To perform human activity monitoring, people must be detected and the analysis has to be done according to the information relative to the environment and the context. Available multi-camera datasets furnish videos with few (or none) information of the environment where the network was deployed. The proposed dataset provides multi-camera multi-space video sets along with the complete contextual information of the environment. The dataset regroups 11 video sets (composed of 62 sin…
