A Crisis Management Serious Game for Responding Extreme Weather Event

2017

Managing crisis with limited resources through a serious game is deemed as one of the ways of training and can be regarded as an alternative to the table-top exercise. This paper presents the so-called “Operasjon Tyrsdal” serious game, inspired by a real case of extreme weather that hit the west coast of Norway. This reference case is used to add realism to the game. The game is designed for a single player, while the mechanics are framed in such way that the player should deal with limited resources, and elevated event pressure over time to manage. Beside applying an iterative Scrum method with seven Sprint cycles, we combined the development work with desk research and involvement of test…

Discovering Homophily in Online Social Networks

2018

During the last ten years, Online Social Networks (OSNs) have increased their popularity by becoming part of the real life of users. Despite their tremendous widespread, OSNs have introduced several privacy issues as a consequence of the nature of the information involved in these services. Indeed, the huge amount of private information produced by users of current OSNs expose the users to a number of risks. The analysis of the users’ similarity in OSNs is attracting the attention of researchers because of its implications on privacy and social marketing. In particular, the homophily between users could be used to reveal important characteristics that users would like to keep hidden, hence …

Retour sensoriel du toucher dans les environnements virtuels

2018

This thesis tackles the subject of the feedbacks of interactions in virtual environments. The theoretical part addresses the different perception schemes and the corresponding haptic modalities. We especially focused on the relevance of each modality for each use-case, on the compatibility with the visual systems which take an important place in virtual reality, and on the problematics of each situation. These studies led us to evaluate passive haptics and sensory substitution for interactions in CAVEs. The results show the importance of choosing the right modality relative to the scenario design. We also evaluated how mismatched the visual and haptic workfield can be, and how the performan…

Environment-Aware RSSI Based Positioning Algorithm for Random Angle Interference Cancellation in Visible Light Positioning System

2021

International audience; Visible Light Positioning (VLP) is considered to be one of the most promising candidates for future Location Based Service (LBSs). The traditional Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) based VLP system is highly sensitized with receiver's orientation. However, the assumption of the receiver's orientation fixed or perfectly known is not realistic in practice. Thus, a random angle between receiver and the horizontal plane inevitably appears among localization, which extremely affects positioning results. This paper proposed an Environment-Aware RSSI based positioning algorithm for VLP system. It enables to mainly eliminate random angle interference without the hel…

Hybrid foveated vision system for video surveillance and robotic navigation

2014

The primary goal of this thesis is to elaborate a binocular vision system using two different types of camera. The system studied here is composed of one omnidirectional camera coupled with a PTZ camera. This heterogeneous association of cameras having different characteristics is called a hybrid stereo-vision system. The couple composed of these two cameras combines the advantages given by both of them, that is to say a large field of view and an accurate vision of a particular Region of interest with an adjustable level of details using the zoom. In this thesis, we are presenting multiple contributions in visual tracking using omnidirectional sensors, PTZ camera self calibration, hybrid v…

Task-based visual analytics for interactive multiobjective optimization

2020

We study how visual interaction techniques considered in visual analytics can be utilized when implementing interactive multiobjective optimization methods, where a decision maker iteratively participates in the solution process. We want to benefit from previous research and avoid re-inventing ideas. Our aim is to widen awareness and increase the applicability of interactive methods for solving real-world problems. As a concrete approach, we introduce seven high-level tasks that are relevant for interactive methods. These high-level tasks are based on low-level tasks proposed in the visual analytics literature. In addition, we give an example on how the high-level tasks can be implemented a…

Discovering the Discriminating Power in Patient Test Features Using Visual Analytics: A Case Study in Parkinson’s Disease

2016

Part 11: New Methods and Tools for Big Data Wokshop (MT4BD); International audience; This paper presents a novel methodology for selecting the most representative features for identifying the presence of the Parkinson’s Disease (PD). The proposed methodology is based on interactive visual analytic based on multi-objective optimisation. The implemented tool processes and visualises the information extracted via performing a typical line-tracking test using a tablet device. Such output information includes several modalities, such as position, velocity, dynamics, etc. Preliminary results depict that the implemented visual analytics technique has a very high potential in discriminating the PD …

1985

A Panel was hold on June 3rd summarizing, in a way, the guide- lines and the aims of the Workshop. General questionswere addressed to M.Disney, E.Groth and D.Wells, who have expressed in the Workshop the point of view from Astronomy in the Sections “Data Analysis methodologies”, “Image processing” and “Systems for Data Analysis” respectively:

Insect brains use image interpolation mechanisms to recognise rotated objects.

2008

Recognising complex three-dimensional objects presents significant challenges to visual systems when these objects are rotated in depth. The image processing requirements for reliable individual recognition under these circumstances are computationally intensive since local features and their spatial relationships may significantly change as an object is rotated in the horizontal plane. Visual experience is known to be important in primate brains learning to recognise rotated objects, but currently it is unknown how animals with comparatively simple brains deal with the problem of reliably recognising objects when seen from different viewpoints. We show that the miniature brain of honeybees…

GESTALT-INSPIRED FEATURES EXTRACTION FOR OBJECT CATEGORY RECOGNITION

2013

International audience; We propose a methodology inspired by Gestalt laws to ex- tract and combine features and we test it on the object cat- egory recognition problem. Gestalt is a psycho-visual the- ory of Perceptual Organization that aims to explain how vi- sual information is organized by our brain. We interpreted its laws of homogeneity and continuation in link with shape and color to devise new features beyond the classical proxim- ity and similarity laws. The shape of the object is analyzed based on its skeleton (good continuation) and as a measure of homogeneity, we propose self-similarity enclosed within shape computed at super-pixel level. Furthermore, we pro- pose a framework to …
