The influence of the nature of the pickets, as well as their number, is discussed in terms of stability, kinetics of metalation, structure, and distortion of the porphyrin. Food supplementation reveals constraints and adaptability of egg quality in the magpie Pica pica

Differences in the deposition of limited maternal resources to eggs can reflect the optimal allocation to manipulate offspring phenotype, or constraints caused by maternal condition. We examined multiple maternal substances transferred to eggs in the magpie Pica pica to test the hypothesis that certain substances represent constraint and some optimal allocation. Dendritic cells (DC) are central regulators of immunity. Signal-induced maturation of DCs is assumed to be the starting point for specific immune responses. To further understand this process, we analyzed the alteration of transcript profiles along the time course of CD40 ligand-induced maturation of human myeloid DCs by Affymetrix GeneChip microarrays covering >6800 genes. Production of an egg yolk antibody against Parietaria judaica 2 allergen

Specific antibodies are essential tools for studying proteins as well as for diagnostic research in biomedicine. The egg yolk of immunized chicken is an inexpensive source of high-quality polyclonal antibodies. The 12-kDa Parietaria judaica 2 allergen was expressed as a fusion protein and was used to immunize Leghorn chickens. In this paper, we show, using 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting, that chicken antibodies raised against a recombinant allergen can be used to recognize similar proteins from a pollen raw extract. Multiple Ig-like featuring genes divergent within and among individuals of the marine sponge Geodia cydonium.

Abstract The receptor tyrosine kinase of the marine sponge Geodia cydonium features two extracellular Ig-like domains in which we recently documented RT-PCR polymorphism among individuals. Genomic-PCR analysis presented here revealed 14 unique sequences from four sponges, differing predominantly in the sequence of an intron which splits the Ig-like domains. Nevertheless, analysis of putative coding regions in 19 distinct clones (156–159 aa) from seven sponges revealed 69 positions of nucleotide substitutions, 67.6% of them non-synonymous, translating into 43 positions of divergent residues.
