Candida biofilms on implanted biomaterials: a clinically significant problem.
2006
In recent years there has been an increasing appreciation that microbial biofilms are ubiquitous, which has resulted in a number of studies on infectious diseases from a biofilm perspective. Biofilms are defined as structured microbial communities that are attached to a surface and encased in a matrix of exopolymeric material. A wide range of biomaterials used in clinical practice have been shown to support colonization and biofilm formation by Candida spp., and the increase in Candida infections in the last decades has almost paralleled the increase and widespread use of a broad range of medical implant devices, mainly in populations with impaired host defenses. Formation of Candida biofil…
Resonance frequency analysis after the placement of 133 dental implants
2006
Successful use of impella CP through femoral access in a patient with bilateral iliac and aortic endoprosthesis in the setting of cardiogenic shock
2019
We report the case of a 67-year-old male, with previous history of severe peripheral vascular disease (abdominal aorta aneurism and bilateral iliac stenosis) requiring the implantation of 3 endoprostheses 7 months ago (Figure 1(A)), and previous myocardial infarction 10 years ago. The left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was preserved at last control (58%). The patient was referred for acute coronary syndrome complicated with pulmonary oedema and cardiogenic shock. Echocardiography showed a severe impairment of LVEF (18%) and the patient was transferred to cathlab for emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Coronary angiography via right femoral 7Fr access showed a chronic …
Auditory, speech and language development in young children with cochlear implants compared with children with normal hearing.
2010
Abstract Objective This study had two aims: (1) to document the auditory and lexical development of children who are deaf and received the first cochlear implant (CI) by the age of 16 months and the second CI by the age of 31 months and (2) to compare these children's results with those of children with normal hearing (NH). Methods This longitudinal study included five children with NH and five with sensorineural deafness. All children of the second group were observed for 36 months after the first fitting of the device (cochlear implant). The auditory development of the CI group was documented every 3 months up to the age of two years in hearing age and chronological age and for the NH gro…
Biocompatibility of alginates for grafting: impact of alginate molecular weight.
2003
Optimising microencapsulation technology towards the effective clinical transplantation has created the need for highly biocompatible alginates. Therefore, in this study the biocompatibility of different beads prepared from alginates with varying average molecular weight was examined. In some experiments the beads were covered with a multilayer membrane surrounded by an alginate layer. First of all, we found that beads made of a lower weight average alginate elicted a much stronger fibrotic response compared to beads made of a higher weight average alginate (LV-alginate > MV-alginate). The results were confirmed by the observation that the extent of tissue fibrosis was significantly increas…
Differential expression of the corticosteroid receptors GR1, GR2 and MR in rainbow trout organs with slow release cortisol implants
2012
The present study describes the transcriptional levels of the corticosteroid receptors (CRs) GR1, GR2 and MR in the different organs of the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in response to a slow release of cortisol, throughout a 10-day period. We show that after short term (1 day after cortisol implantation), when the plasma levels of cortisol emulate an acute stress, the GR2 and MR expression levels were upregulated in the brain and head kidney tissues. This result reflects the role of these organs as regulators of the stress response. In general, the rest of the organs, especially gills, intestine, liver, muscle and spleen, showed decreased transcriptional levels of GR1, GR2 and MR, al…
Influence of a collagen membrane and recombinant platelet-derived growth factor on vertical bone augmentation in implant-fixed deproteinized bovine b…
2012
Combinations of bone substitute block materials with membrane techniques as well as with growth factors are possible options to enhance the prognosis of vertical bone augmentation. Therefore, the aim of the pilot study was to compare the influence of a collagen membrane and a signal protein (rhPDGF-BB) on vertical bone augmentation with a stable fixed block material (deproteinized bovine bone [DBB]).In 12 rabbits, a DBB-block was implant-fixed on the tibia in a split-leg-design. Included were: DBB only (control), DBB + collagen membrane (test), DBB + rhPDGF-BB (test) and DBB + rhPDGF-BB + collagen membrane (test). 24 samples were examined after 3 (n = 12) and 6 weeks (n = 12). Calculated pa…
The role of angiogenesis in implant dentistry part II: the effect of bone-grafting and barrier membrane materials on angiogenesis
2016
Background : In implant dentistry, bone substitute materials and barrier membranes are used in different treatments including guided bone regeneration (GBR), socket preservation, alveolar ridge augmentation, maxillary sinus elevation, and filling bony defects around the inserted dental implant. One of the most important factors in prognosis of treatments using these materials is the growth of new blood vessels in applied areas. Present review was performed to evaluate the effect of the bone-grafting and barrier membrane materials on angiogenesis events. Material and Methods : An electronic search was performed in PubMed, MEDLINE, and EMBASE databases via OVID using the keywords mentioned in…
Effect on osseointegration of two implant macro-designs:A histomorphometric analysis of bicortically installed implants in different topographic site…
2018
Background To evaluate the effect of two different implant macro-designs on the sequential osseointegration at bicortically installed implants in the rabbit tibia. A further aim is to compare the osseointegration at different topographic zones. Material and Methods 27 New Zealand rabbits were implemented. Two implants, one for each macro-design (Ticare Inhex® or Ticare Quattro®, Mozo-Grau, Valladolid, Spain), were randomly implanted in the diaphysis or metaphysis of each tibia. The flaps were sutured to allow a submerged healing. The animals were sacrificed after 2, 4 or 8 weeks. Ground sections were prepared and analyzed. Results No statistically significant differences were found between …
Immediate loading implants: Review of the critical aspects
2018
Purpose. Modern dentistry have witnessed, a rapid and continuing evolution. Concerning the implant-rehabilitation protocols, they have beenEdizioniredefined in order to satisfy patientâs increasing expectations in terms of comfort, aesthetic and shorter treatment period. The purpose of this review is to explore the concept of implant immediate loading and the indications for clinical practice. All the critical aspects that could influence the outcomes of this treatment will also be considered. Materials and methods. Three protocols for implant load timing have been classified: immediate loading implants (ILI); early loading implants (ELI); and conventional loading implants (CLI). Two subc…
