The perceptions of parents of children with cancer about changes in family relations

2012

Changes in Family Income around the Time of Birth of Children in Germany between 1985 and 2004

2010

Anti-inflammatory activity in selected Antarctic benthic organisms

2014

Antarctic benthos was prospected in search for anti-inflammatory activity in polar benthic invertebrates, in two different geographical areas: deep-bottoms of the Eastern Weddell Sea and shallow-waters of the South Shetland Islands. A total of 36 benthic algae and invertebrate species were selected to perform solubility tests in order to obtain extracts that were soluble at an innocuous ethanol concentration (0.2%) for cell culture, and further test them for anti-inflammatory activity. From these, ethanol extracts of ten species from five different phyla resulted suitable to be studied in cell macrophage cultures (RAW 264.7). Cytotoxicity (MTT method) and production of inflammatory mediator…

The Ferroxidase Hephaestin in Lung Cancer: Pathological Significance and Prognostic Value

2021

AbstractIron is a fundamental nutrient utilized by living cells to support several key cellular processes. Despite its paramount role to sustain cell survival, excess of labile iron availability can inflict severe cell damage via reactive oxygen species generation which, in turn, can promote neoplastic transformation. The lung is particularly sensitive to iron-induced oxidative stress, given the high oxygen tensions herein present. Moreover, cigarette smoke as well as air pollution particulate can function as vehicles of iron supply, leading to an iron dysregulation condition shown to be crucial in the pathogenesis of several respiratory diseases including lung cancer. Hephaestin (HEPH) bel…

Recent improvements in in situ hybridization for the detection of HPV infections in clinical samples

2020

Objective: Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection is well-established as a cause of cervical cancer. Importantly, early HPV detection can decrease both the frequency and mortality of HPV-related cancers. In situ hybridization (ISH) is a widely used method for the early detection of HPV. Yet, ISH can be expensive, time-consuming and, in some cases, insufficiently sensitive to detect nucleic acid target at low copy number, which may lead to false-positive or false-negative results. To address these limitations, we recently developed a novel in situ hybridization technology based on proprietary Loop RNA probes (LRPs), which provides enhanced sensitivity, high-specificity and improved cost-effec…

C1q–Ha matrix regulates the local synthesis of hyaluronan in malignant pleural mesothelioma by modulating has3 expression

2021

Increased hyaluronic acid (HA) production is often associated with cancer progression. In malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), HA is found at elevated levels in pleural effusions and sera of patients, and it has been widely debated whether MPM cells are able to produce HA by themselves or through the release of growth factors stimulating other cells. Another key component of the MPM microenvironment is C1q, which can act as a pro-tumorigenic factor favoring cell adhesion, migration and proliferation. The aim of the current study was to prove that MPM primary cells are able to synthesize HA and to inquire the stimulus given by C1q&ndash

Density Decline in a Mediterranean Seahorse Population: Natural Fluctuations or New Emerging Threats?

2021

Illegal wildlife trade is considered one of the most serious threats to biodiversity worldwide, along with habitat loss/degradation and overfishing of wild stocks. Seahorses are considered at high risk as these fish represent an important component of traditional Chinese medicine but are also sold as curios and ornamental fish. On a worldwide level, illegal trade is controlled by numerous laws and regulations, but it seems to continue by assuming more dynamic routes. In the Mediterranean Sea, Hippocampus guttulatus formed one of the largest populations at Mar Piccolo di Taranto in South-Eastern Italy. During the routine monitoring of this population in 2016, a dramatic density decrease was …

First-Line Treatments for Extensive-Stage Small-Cell Lung Cancer With Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors Plus Chemotherapy: A Network Meta-Analysis and Cos…

2022

BackgroundImmune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) plus chemotherapy were unlikely to be considered cost-effective compared with chemotherapy as the first-line treatment of patients with extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) in China due to its high costs. However, the cost-effectiveness of the comparison between the regimens of ICIs plus chemotherapy were remained unclear yet. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of ICIs plus chemotherapy as the first-line treatment for ES-SCLC from the perspective of the Chinese healthcare system.MethodsA network meta-analysis (NMA) was conducted to indirect compare the clinical benefits between the ICIs plus che…

The Application of CRISPR/Cas9 Technology for Cancer Immunotherapy: Current Status and Problems

2022

Cancer is one of the main causes of disease-related deaths in the world. Although cancer treatment strategies have been improved in recent years, the survival time of cancer patients is still far from satisfied. Cancer immunotherapy, such as Oncolytic virotherapy, Immune checkpoints inhibition, Chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy, Chimeric antigen receptor natural killer (CAR-NK) cell therapy and macrophages genomic modification, has emerged as an effective therapeutic strategy for different kinds of cancer. However, many patients do not respond to the cancer immunotherapy which warrants further investigation to optimize this strategy. The clustered regularly interspaced short …
