Femtosecond laser induced breakdown spectroscopy of air–methane mixtures

Abstract Femtosecond laser pulses are used in order to induce dielectric breakdown in gaseous mixtures, namely in some reactive air–methane mixtures. The light emitted from the laser induced plasma was analyzed while the main emission features are identified and assigned. From the analysis of the emission spectra, a linear relationship was found to hold between the intensity of some spectral features and methane content. Finally, the use of femtosecond laser induced breakdown as a tool for the in situ determination of the composition of gaseous mixtures (e.g., equivalence ratio) is also discussed.

Single-Crystal X-Ray Diffraction Study of Pressure and Temperature-Induced Spin Trapping in a Bistable Iron(II) Hofmann Framework.

High-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction has been used to trap both the low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) states of the iron(II) Hofmann spin crossover framework, [FeII (pdm)(H2 O)[Ag(CN)2 ]2 ⋅H2 O, under identical experimental conditions, allowing the structural changes arising from the spin-transition to be deconvoluted from previously reported thermal effects.

Asymmetric transmission of transverse magnetic or radially polarized THZ waves through sub-wavelength gratings

We have developed a metallic double circular grating with sub-wavelength slits which blocks radially polarized light incident from one of its sides and acts as a focusing diffractive element in the other direction. The proposed grating has been optimized for the sub-THz frequency range. Unidirectional transmission through the grating has been demonstrated experimentally at 0.1 THz. We have also developed a planar metallic double grating with sub-wavelength slits which blocks light with a transverse magnetic polarization incident from one of the grating sides and transmits radiation incident from the opposite direction into the +1 and −1 diffraction orders. Structural study of α-Bi2O3 under pressure

An experimental and theoretical study of the structural properties of monoclinic bismuth oxide (alpha-(BiO3)-O-2) under high pressures is here reported. Both synthetic and mineral bismite powder samples have been compressed up to 45 GPa and their equations of state have been determined with angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements. Experimental results have been also compared with theoretical calculations which suggest the possibility of several phase transitions below 10 GPa. However, experiments reveal only a pressure-induced amorphization between 15 and 25 GPa, depending on sample quality and deviatoric stresses. Deep fluid transfer evidenced by surface deformation during the 2014–2015 unrest at Piton de la Fournaise volcano

International audience; Identifying the onset of volcano unrest and providing an unequivocal identification of volcano reawakening remain challenging problems in volcanology. At Piton de la Fournaise, renewal of eruptive activity in 2014–2015, after 41 months of quiescence and deflation, was associated with long-term continuous edifice inflation measured by GNSS. Inflation started on June 9, 2014, and its rate progressively increased through 2015. Inflation onset was rapidly followed by an eruption on June 20–21, 2014, showing that volcano reactivation can be extremely fast, even after long non-eruptive phases. A series of [OsII(NN)(CO)2Cl2] complexes where NN is a 2,2′-bipyridine ligand substituted in the 4,4′ positions by H (C1), CH3 (C2), C(CH3)3 (C3), or C(O)OCH(CH3)2 (C4) has been studied as catalysts for the reduction of CO2. Electrocatalysis shows that the selectivity of the reaction can be switched toward the production of CO or HCOO− with an electron-donating (C2, C3) or -withdrawing (C4) substituent, respectively. The electrocatalytic process is a result of the formation of an Os0-bonded polymer, which was characterized by electrochemistry, UV/Visible and EPR spectroscopies. On the orders of zeros of irreducible characters

Let G be a finite group and p a prime number. We say that an element g in G is a vanishing element of G if there exists an irreducible character χ of G such that χ (g) = 0. The main result of this paper shows that, if G does not have any vanishing element of p-power order, then G has a normal Sylow p-subgroup. Also, we prove that this result is a generalization of some classical theorems in Character Theory of finite groups. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A graph G is (a,b)-choosable if for any color list of size a associated with each vertex, one can choose a subset of b colors such that adjacent vertices are colored with disjoint color sets. This paper proves that for any integer m>=1, every finite triangle-free induced subgraph of the triangular lattice is (5m,2m)-choosable.
