Recent results on Heavy-Ion induced reactions of interest for 0νββ decay

An updated overview of recent results on Heavy-Ion induced reactions of interest for neutrinoless double beta decay is reported in the framework of the NUMEN project. The NUMEN idea is to study heavy-ion induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions with the aim to get information on the nuclear matrix elements for neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay. Moreover, to infer the neutrino average masses from the possible measurement of the half- life of 0νββ decay, the knowledge of the nuclear matrix elements is a crucial aspect. Gene Expression and Epigenetic Signatures of Germ Cell-Derived Pluripotent Stem Cells and Embryonic Stem Cells

Germ cell-derived Pluripotent Stem Cells (gPSCs) are pluripotent stem cells that originate from Spermatogonial Stem Cells (SSCs) of the testis. Several reports in the last few years have shown that it is possible to isolate and enrich the SSC population by different approaches and even reprogram these in vivo multipotent cells to gPSCs in vitro. mRNA reprogramming results in the generation of genetically stable induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells while avoiding the risks of genomic integration. Previously published mRNA reprogramming protocols have proven to be inconsistent and time-consuming and mainly restricted to fibroblasts, thereby demonstrating the need for a simple but reproducible protocol applicable to various cell types. So far there have been no published reports using mRNA to reprogram any cell type derived from human blood. Zfp819, a novel KRAB-zinc finger protein, interacts with KAP1 and functions in genomic integrity maintenance of mouse embryonic stem cells

AbstractPluripotency is maintained by both known and unknown transcriptional regulatory networks. In the present study, we have identified Zfp819, a KRAB-zinc finger protein, as a novel pluripotency-related factor and characterized its role in pluripotent stem cells. We show that Zfp819 is expressed highly in various types of pluripotent stem cells but not in their differentiated counterparts. We identified the presence of non-canonical nuclear localization signals in particular zinc finger motifs and identified them as responsible for the nuclear localization of Zfp819. Hepatotoxicity is the number one cause for agencies not approving and withdrawing drugs for the market. Drug-induced human hepatotoxicity frequently goes undetected in preclinical safety evaluations using animal models. Human-derived in vitro models represent a common alternative to in vivo tests to detect toxic effects during preclinical testing. Most current in vitro toxicity assays rely on the measurement of nonspecific or low sensitive endpoints, which result in poor concordance with human liver toxicity. Ab initio molecular dynamics study of overtone excitations in formic acid and its water complex

In this article, we present results from ab initio molecular dynamics simulation of overtone excitation in formic acid monomer and its water complex in the gas phase. For the monomer, a conformation change is observed employing both OH and CH vibrational excitations, which supports experimental findings. In the formic acid–water complex, interconversion also takes place, but it proceeds via hydrogen exchange rather than via intramolecular reaction. Simulations raise a question on effect of quantum and matrix effects to the results. Also, a brief test of different computation methods was done on the system. peerReviewed

One-Dimensional Transient Analysis of Rainfall Infiltration in Unsaturated Volcanic Ash

The paper presents a one-dimensional hydro-mechanical analysis of rainfall infiltration in a loose volcanic ash and the utilisation of a factor of safety for the implementation of an early-warning system. Three different rainy seasons with different rainfall patterns were analysed . The analysis aims to understand the influence of the antecedent rainfall on the wetting front, the pore-water pressures and the factor of safety. The analysis was carried out in the context of a Master project of the first author at the Laboratory for Soil Mechanics of EPFL.
