Laser light scattering and polydispersity of polymers

1977

The application of lasers to light scattering improves the potentials of elastic scattering, especially in the high molecular weight range and enables the technique of inelastic scattering to be used. For elastic light scattering an experimental arrangement and an evaluation method is described which allows, within appropriate molecular weight ranges, the determination of the ratio Mw/Mn from the experimental scattering function with an accuracy down to 0.02. The newer technique of inelastic light scattering yields the coefficient of translational diffusion D. Besides D, the friction coefficient f is also directly accessible. The basic equations are reported, as well as an application to mi…

Magnetic excitations in an exchange-coupled tetramer cluster of cobalt (II): a study by inelastic neutron scattering

1992

Abstract The polyoxometalate K 10 [Co 4 (H 2 O) 2 (PW 9 O 34 ) 2 ].20H 2 O contains a ferromagnetically exchange-coupled tetramer of Co 11 encapsulated in between two diamagnetic molecules (PW 9 O 34 -9 . At 2.5K several inelastic peaks are observed in the energy range 1.5–7 meV, which are assigned to magnetic excitations in the cluster. A tentative interpretation of these data from an anisotropic exchange model yields a cobalt-cobalt interaction of 3meV (24cm -1 ) and an amount of anisotropy J xy / J z ≌0.6. These values are consistent with the magnetic susceptibility measurements.

12C + 12C large angle elastic scattering at 240 MeV

2010

Abstract The measurement of the differential cross sections of the 12C + 12C and the 13C + 12C elastic scattering are carried out at the 12C energy 240 MeV and the 13C energy 250 MeV to solve some interpretation problem of the 12C + 12C scattering data. Is it possible that the 1st Airy minimum in 12C + 12C scattering data is missing? Our analysis shows that the positions of the 1st Airy minima obtained in former measurements are confirmed.

Magnetic Excitations in Tetrameric Clusters of Polyoxometalates Observed by Inelastic Neutron Scattering. Evidence for Anisotropic Exchange Interacti…

1997

Magnetic excitations in tetranuclear clusters of exchange-coupled metal ions encapsulated by polyoxotungstate ligands (1) have been observed by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) in the salts K10[M4(H2O)2(PW9O34)2]·nH2O, where M2+ = Mn, Co, and Ni. INS provides a much deeper and more detailed insight into the nature of the magnetic coupling in these clusters than bulk techniques. In particular, anisotropic exchange interactions are evidenced in the ferromagnetic Co4 cluster.

Channel Formation and Intermediate Range Order in Sodium Silicate Melts and Glasses

2004

We use inelastic neutron scattering and molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the interplay between the structure and the fast sodium ion diffusion in various sodium silicates. With increasing temperature and decreasing density the structure factors exhibit an emerging prepeak around 0.9 A^-1. We show, that this prepeak has its origin in the formation of sodium rich channels in the static structure. The channels serve as preferential ion conducting pathways in the relative immobile Si-O matrix. On cooling below the glass transition this intermediate range order is frozen in.

Vibrational spectrum of the spin crossover complex [Fe(phen)(2)(NCS)(2)] studied by IR and Raman spectroscopy, nuclear inelastic scattering and DFT c…

2006

The vibrational modes of the low-spin and high-spin isomers of the spin crossover complex [Fe(phen)(2)(NCS)(2)] (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) have been measured by IR and Raman spectroscopy and by nuclear inelastic scattering. The vibrational frequencies and normal modes and the IR and Raman intensities have been calculated by density functional methods. The vibrational entropy difference between the two isomers, DeltaS(vib), which is--together with the electronic entropy difference DeltaS(el)--the driving force for the spin-transition, has been determined from the measured and from the calculated frequencies. The calculated difference (DeltaS(vib) = 57-70 J mol(-1) K(-1), depending on the m…

Operator mixing and scaling deviations in asymptotically free field theories

1976

Predictions of asymptotically free field theories for scaling deviations of the structure functions are compared with recent SLAC and Fermilab data on deep-inelastic lepton-hadron scattering. Contributions of nonsinglet as well as singlet Wilson operators are taken into account. The latter contributions are found to be non-negligible; specifically it is observed, in agreement with neutrino data, that about 60% of the proton's momentum is due to gluons. The expected quantitative pattern of scaling violations is given for a large range of ..omega.. and Q/sup 2/. (AIP)

Recent Advances of Spin Crossover Research

2004

Thermal spin transition (spin crossover), one of the most fascinating dynamic electronic structure phenomena occurring in coordination compounds of third row transition metal ions, mostly of iron(II), iron(III) and cobalt(II) with critical ligand field strengths competing with the spin pairing energy, has attracted increasing attention by many research groups. One of the reasons is the promising potential for practical applications. In this chapter we intend to cover essential recent work, primarily accomplished within the European research network on "Thermal and Optical Switching of Molecular Spin States (TOSS)". New spin crossover compounds and their thermal spin transition behaviour, al…
