Child-display interaction: Exploring avatar-based touchless gestural interfaces

2019

During the last decade, touchless gestural interfaces have been widely studied as one of the most promising interaction paradigms in the context of pervasive displays. In particular, avatars and silhouettes have been proved to be effective in communicating the touchless gestural interactivity supported by displays. In the paper, we take a child-display interaction perspective by exploring avatar-based touchless gestural interfaces. We believe that large displays offer an opportunity to stimulate child experience and engagement, for instance when learning about art, as well as bringing a number of challenges. The purpose of this study is twofold: 1) identifying the relevant aspects of childr…

An Intelligent Empowering Agent (IEA) to Provide Easily Understood and Trusted Health Information Appropriate to the User Needs

2023

AbstractMost members of the public, including patients, usually obtain health information from Web searches using generic search engines, which is often overwhelming, too generic, and of poor quality. Although patients may be better informed, they are often none the wiser and not empowered to communicate with medical professionals so that their care is compatible with their needs, values, and best interests. Intelligent Empowering Agents (IEA) use AI to filter medical information and assist the user in the understanding of health information about specific complaints or health in general. We have designed and developed a prototype of an IEA that dialogues with the user in simple language, c…

Wearable Multisensor Ring-Shaped Probe for Assessing Stress and Blood Oxygenation: Design and Preliminary Measurements

2023

The increasing interest in innovative solutions for health and physiological monitoring has recently fostered the development of smaller biomedical devices. These devices are capable of recording an increasingly large number of biosignals simultaneously, while maximizing the user’s comfort. In this study, we have designed and realized a novel wearable multisensor ring-shaped probe that enables synchronous, real-time acquisition of photoplethysmographic (PPG) and galvanic skin response (GSR) signals. The device integrates both the PPG and GSR sensors onto a single probe that can be easily placed on the finger, thereby minimizing the device footprint and overall size. The system enables the e…

Fast adaptive frame preprocessing for 3D reconstruction

2015

Abstract: This paper presents a new online preprocessing strategy to detect and discard ongoing bad frames in video sequences. These include frames where an accurate localization between corresponding points is difficult, such as for blurred frames, or which do not provide relevant information with respect to the previous frames in terms of texture, image contrast and non-flat areas. Unlike keyframe selectors and deblurring methods, the proposed approach is a fast preprocessing working on a simple gradient statistic, that does not require to compute complex time-consuming image processing, such as the computation of image feature keypoints, previous poses and 3D structure, or to know a prio…

Towards a deep-learning-based methodology for supporting satire detection

2021

This paper describes an approach for supporting automatic satire detection through effective deep learning (DL) architecture that has been shown to be useful for addressing sarcasm/irony detection problems. We both trained and tested the system exploiting articles derived from two important satiric blogs, Lercio and IlFattoQuotidiano, and significant Italian newspapers.

DAISY: a distributed architecture for intelligent SYstem

1997

Distributed perceptual systems are endowed with different kind of sensors, from which information flows to suitable modules to perform useful elaborations for decisions making. In this paper a new distributed architecture, named 'Distributed Architecture for Intelligent SYstem' (DAISY), is proposed. It is based on the concept of co-operating behavioral agents supervised by a 'Central Engagement Module'. This module integrates the processing of data coming from the behavioral agents with a symbolic level of representation, by the introduction of a 'conceptual space' intermediate analogue representation. The DAISY project is under development; experiments on navigation and exploration for an …

A pattern recognition approach to identify biological clusters acquired by acoustic multi-beam in Kongsfjorden

2022

The Svalbardsis one of the most intensively studied marine regions in the Artic; here the composition and distribution of marine assemblages are changing under the effect of global change, and marine communities are monitored in order to understand the long-term effects on marine biodiversity. In the present work, acoustic data collected in the Kongsfjorden using multi-beam technology was analyzed to develop a methodology for identifying and classifying 3D acoustic patterns related to fish aggregations. In particular, morphological, energetic and depth features were taken into account to develop a multi-variate classification procedure allowing to discriminate fish species. The results obta…

Automatic classification of acoustically detected krill aggregations: A case study from Southern Ocean

2022

Acoustic surveys represent the standard methodology to assess the spatial distribution and abundance of pelagic organisms characterized by aggregative behaviour. The species identification of acoustically observed aggregations is usually performed by taking into account the biological sampling and according to expert-based knowledge. The precision of survey estimates, such as total abundance and spatial distribution, strongly depends on the efficiency of acoustic and biological sampling as well as on the species identification. In this context, the automatic identification of specific groups based on energetic and morphological features could improve the species identification process, allo…

A New Class of Searchable and Provably Highly Compressible String Transformations

2019

The Burrows-Wheeler Transform is a string transformation that plays a fundamental role for the design of self-indexing compressed data structures. Over the years, researchers have successfully extended this transformation outside the domains of strings. However, efforts to find non-trivial alternatives of the original, now 25 years old, Burrows-Wheeler string transformation have met limited success. In this paper we bring new lymph to this area by introducing a whole new family of transformations that have all the "myriad virtues" of the BWT: they can be computed and inverted in linear time, they produce provably highly compressible strings, and they support linear time pattern search direc…

HarrisZ$^+$: Harris Corner Selection for Next-Gen Image Matching Pipelines

2022

Due to its role in many computer vision tasks, image matching has been subjected to an active investigation by researchers, which has lead to better and more discriminant feature descriptors and to more robust matching strategies, also thanks to the advent of the deep learning and the increased computational power of the modern hardware. Despite of these achievements, the keypoint extraction process at the base of the image matching pipeline has not seen equivalent progresses. This paper presents HarrisZ$^+$, an upgrade to the HarrisZ corner detector, optimized to synergically take advance of the recent improvements of the other steps of the image matching pipeline. HarrisZ$^+$ does not onl…
