CoCoDat: a database system for organizing and selecting quantitative data on single neurons and neuronal microcircuitry.

2004

We present a novel database system for organizing and selecting quantitative experimental data on single neurons and neuronal microcircuitry that has proven useful for reference-keeping, experimental planning and computational modelling. Building on our previous experience with large neuroscientific databases, the system takes into account the diversity and method-dependence of single cell and microcircuitry data and provides tools for entering and retrieving published data without a priori interpretation or summarizing. Data representation is based on the framework suggested by biophysical theory and enables flexible combinations of data on membrane conductances, ionic and synaptic current…

Dynamics and inertia of skyrmionic spin structures

2015

Understanding the motion of magnetic skyrmions is essential if they are to be used as information carriers in devices. It is now shown that topological confinement endows the skyrmions with an unexpectedly large mass, which plays a key role in their dynamics.

Entropy characteristics of heart rate wavelet multiscale components in epileptic children before and after seizures

2020

In this work, we analyze the information content of the multiple time scale components of heart rate variability (HRV) in children with focal epilepsy. HRV components are extracted from 30 pediatric patients, monitored 10 min and 10 s before and after focal epileptic seizures, using wavelet multiscale decomposition (with 5, 15, 30, 60, 120, 180 s time scale), and then characterized computing Entropy (E), permutation entropy (PE), conditional entropy (CE) and information storage (IS). Moving from preictal to postictal windows, we find statistically significant differences in the CE and IS values of HRV components at short time scales, which reflect autonomic imbalance and appear as potential…

Local dimensionality reduction and supervised learning within natural clusters for biomedical data analysis

2006

Inductive learning systems were successfully applied in a number of medical domains. Nevertheless, the effective use of these systems often requires data preprocessing before applying a learning algorithm. This is especially important for multidimensional heterogeneous data presented by a large number of features of different types. Dimensionality reduction (DR) is one commonly applied approach. The goal of this paper is to study the impact of natural clustering--clustering according to expert domain knowledge--on DR for supervised learning (SL) in the area of antibiotic resistance. We compare several data-mining strategies that apply DR by means of feature extraction or feature selection w…

A completely automated CAD system for mass detection in a large mammographic database.

2006

Mass localization plays a crucial role in computer-aided detection (CAD) systems for the classification of suspicious regions in mammograms. In this article we present a completely automated classification system for the detection of masses in digitized mammographic images. The tool system we discuss consists in three processing levels: (a) Image segmentation for the localization of regions of interest (ROIs). This step relies on an iterative dynamical threshold algorithm able to select iso-intensity closed contours around gray level maxima of the mammogram. (b) ROI characterization by means of textural features computed from the gray tone spatial dependence matrix (GTSDM), containing secon…

Feasibility of Linear Parametric Estimation of Dynamic Information Measures to assess Physiological Stress from Short-Term Cardiovascular Variability

2021

Extensive efforts have been recently devoted to implement fast and reliable algorithms capable of assessing the physiological response of the organism to physiological stress. In this study, we propose the comparison between model-free and linear parametric methods as regards their ability to detect alterations in the dynamics and in the complexity of cardiovascular and respiratory variability evoked by postural and mental stress. Dynamic entropy (DE) and information storage (IS) measures were calculated on three physiological time-series, i.e. heart period, respiratory volume and systolic arterial pressure, on 61 healthy subjects monitored in resting conditions as well as during head-up ti…

Do-search -- a tool for causal inference and study design with multiple data sources

2020

Epidemiologic evidence is based on multiple data sources including clinical trials, cohort studies, surveys, registries, and expert opinions. Merging information from different sources opens up new possibilities for the estimation of causal effects. We show how causal effects can be identified and estimated by combining experiments and observations in real and realistic scenarios. As a new tool, we present do-search, a recently developed algorithmic approach that can determine the identifiability of a causal effect. The approach is based on do-calculus, and it can utilize data with nontrivial missing data and selection bias mechanisms. When the effect is identifiable, do-search outputs an i…

Multiscale analysis of information dynamics for linear multivariate processes.

2016

In the study of complex physical and physiological systems represented by multivariate time series, an issue of great interest is the description of the system dynamics over a range of different temporal scales. While information-theoretic approaches to the multiscale analysis of complex dynamics are being increasingly used, the theoretical properties of the applied measures are poorly understood. This study introduces for the first time a framework for the analytical computation of information dynamics for linear multivariate stochastic processes explored at different time scales. After showing that the multiscale processing of a vector autoregressive (VAR) process introduces a moving aver…

A comparative analysis of the statistical properties of large mobile phone calling networks.

2014

Mobile phone calling is one of the most widely used communication methods in modern society. The records of calls among mobile phone users provide us a valuable proxy for the understanding of human communication patterns embedded in social networks. Mobile phone users call each other forming a directed calling network. If only reciprocal calls are considered, we obtain an undirected mutual calling network. The preferential communication behavior between two connected users can be statistically tested and it results in two Bonferroni networks with statistically validated edges. We perform a comparative analysis of the statistical properties of these four networks, which are constructed from …
