Tensions in Information System Artefacts: Explaining Land Information Systems’ Sub-optimal Impact in Indonesia

2017

Part 14: Current Issues; International audience; Despite the advancement of more integrated land information systems (LIS), conflicts and disputes over land in Indonesia remain. Our study seeks to explain this situation. Using an interpretive case study conducted in Eastern Indonesia and framed within the concepts of information system (IS) artefacts, we find that tensions within and between information, technology, and social artefacts help to explain the sub-optimal LIS impacts. Inconsistent information, unsuitable technology, and conflicting social arrangements are examples of such tensions. Unless the tensions are properly resolved, LIS use cannot fulfil its potential for more appropria…

Incremental Accumulation of Information Systems Design Theory

2021

This paper proposes an organizing device for accumulation of information systems (IS) design theory components within a study but also across research studies. The proposed framework enables actors to understand the relationship over time between search spaces of information systems design science theory (ISDT) development by one and the same or different actors. The proposition rests on the notion that ISDT development is an iterative and incremental process that often happens across different research studies. Finally, we argue that with the proposed framework, ISDT knowledge is more easily transferred and combined with the search processes.

Toward a Theory of Information Systems Security Behaviors of Organizational Employees: A Dialectical Process Perspective

2019

Practice-/policy-oriented abstract: Understanding why employees do or do not comply with information systems security (ISS) procedures is an imperative in today’s organizations whose futures often depend on how well they protect and harness information assets. We use a predominantly inductive approach to develop a theoretical understanding of how employees’ reasons for engaging to ISS behaviors (ISSBs) change over time, using ideas from dialectics as our scaffolding. Our dialectical view of this process suggests that explanations for engaging in different ISSBs change over time as individuals seek to balance contradictory demands. Furthermore, our view suggests that new experiences and ext…

Multi-level contrast filtering in image difference metrics

2013

In this paper, we present a new metric to estimate the perceived difference in contrast between an original image and a reproduction. This metric, named weighted-level framework Δ E E (WLF-DEE), implements a multilevel filtering based on the difference of Gaussians model proposed by Tadmor and Tolhurst (2000) and the new Euclidean color difference formula in log-compressed OSA-UCS space proposed by Oleari et al. (2009). Extensive tests and analysis are presented on four different categories belonging to the well-known Tampere Image Database and on two databases developed at our institution, providing different distortions directly related to color and contrast. Comparisons in performance wi…

A Branch-Price-and-Cut Algorithm for the Min-Max k -Vehicle Windy Rural Postman Problem

2013

[EN] The min-max k -vehicles windy rural postman problem consists of minimizing the maximal distance traveled by a vehicle to find a set of balanced routes that jointly service all the required edges in a windy graph. This is a very difficult problem, for which a branch-and-cut algorithm has already been proposed, providing good results when the number of vehicles is small. In this article, we present a branch-price-and-cut method capable of obtaining optimal solutions for this problem when the number of vehicles is larger for the same set of required edges. Extensive computational results on instances from the literature are presented.

Contours of diffusion of electronic data interchange in Finland

1998

Abstract Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)—despite its basic simplicity—forms a complex and inter-organizational innovation. This necessitates multiple points of observation and the use of multiple theoretical frames in accounting EDI diffusion processes. Based on field study data we deliver a multi-level account of EDI diffusion in Finland. The study clarifies how factors located on three levels of analysis can be applied to understand the unfolding of EDI adoption in different organizational constellations, here called diffusion patterns. We examine three families of diffusion patterns: local dyadic patterns; industry-wide networks; and national initiatives. Overall we discern five distin…

2021

Abstract The use of the internet and social media have changed consumer behavior and the ways in which companies conduct their business. Social and digital marketing offers significant opportunities to organizations through lower costs, improved brand awareness and increased sales. However, significant challenges exist from negative electronic word-of-mouth as well as intrusive and irritating online brand presence. This article brings together the collective insight from several leading experts on issues relating to digital and social media marketing. The experts’ perspectives offer a detailed narrative on key aspects of this important topic as well as perspectives on more specific issues i…

The Steiner Traveling Salesman Problem and its extensions

2019

Abstract This paper considers the Steiner Traveling Salesman Problem, an extension of the classical Traveling Salesman Problem on an incomplete graph where not all vertices have demand. Some extensions including several depots or location decisions are introduced, modeled and solved. A compact integer linear programming formulation is proposed for each problem, where the routes are represented with two-index decision variables, and parity conditions are modeled using cocircuit inequalities. Exact branch-and-cut algorithms are developed for all formulations. Computational results obtained confirm the good performance of the algorithms. Instances with up to 500 vertices are solved optimally.

Rough Set Algebras as Description Domains

2009

Study of the so called knowledge ordering of rough sets was initiated by V.W. Marek and M. Truszczynski at the end of 90-ies. Under this ordering, the rough sets of a fixed approximation space form a domain in which every set ↓ is a Boolean algebra. In the paper, an additional operation inversion on rough set domains is introduced and an abstract axiomatic description of obtained algebras of rough set is given. It is shown that the resulting class of algebras is essentially different from those traditional in rough set theory: it is not definable, for instance, in the class of regular double Stone algebras, and conversely.
