Welcome to the candy shop! Conflicting representations of black masculinity
2014
AbstractMainstream hip hop videos have long been known for their images of scantily clad women, extreme materialism, and misogynist and homophobic lyrics. In this article I focus on how rapper 50 Cent's masculinity is constructed and expressed through music, lyrics and images in his video ‘Candy Shop’ from 2005. This is a classically modelled hip hop video, replete with markers of hypermasculinity: fancy cars, ‘bling’, and lots of beautiful, sexually available women. Several scholars have discussed how women are exploited in videos like this and reduced to props for the male star. However, few have explored how this macho masculinity is constructed. Through a close reading of this video, us…
Honour, Masculinity and Corporality in the Officer Corps of Early Eighteenth-Century Sweden
2010
Military honour and physical commitment to serve king and fatherland played a central role in the ideals of the army of Charles XII of Sweden. These ideals were formed within a culture in which the role of the warrior, dictated by a code of honour, was constantly challenged. My main empirical primary sources consist of the archivale records of the Swedish Diet, which included Placement Committee records from the Diet of 1723. An honourable man had the right to a livelihood and a respectable position in society. My aim is to show that, in order to obtain such a position, a military man had to present himself as someone who had offered his body in the service of his king and country. An appea…
Valencia’s ‘Men for Equality’ movement. An assessment of some of its protagonists
2019
The Men for Equality movement [El movimiento de hombres por la igualdad - HPLI], although a fairly recent phenomenon, already has a forty year track record in Valencia. The movement has had its high and low points. After the trail blazed by protagonists in Valencian society, a period of consolidation followed in which those who came after them kept the movement going. A qualitative study carried out by the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology records the impressions of those men who kept the movement alive between 1975 and 2018 despite the odds at the outset. These voices are analysed within frameworks for interpreting movements. As a social movement, Men for Equality developed n…
Deconstructing Machos, Constructing People. Narratives of Alienation from Hegemonic Masculinity in Spain
2022
Epistemic, interpersonal, and moral stances in the construction of us and them in Christian metal lyrics
2011
Abstract Religious groupings and subcultures both tend to have well-articulated interests, aims, and values that unite certain people but also alienate those who do not share their interests. The case is then made for the construction of difference between ‘us’ and ‘them’. This paper examines the construction of such a group boundary in the previously little studied context of the Christian metal (CM) music subculture. The focus of analysis is on the kinds of stances that are taken and attributed to ‘us’ and ‘them’ in the English lyrics of Finnish CM groups. The particular types of stance are related to questions of epistemology, interpersonality, and morality. The paper shows that the bord…

Critical factors influencing international sporting success of the Philippines : the athletes' perspective
2017
The aim of this study is to contribute to the understanding of the recent declining performance of the Philippines in international sporting competitions by identifying and evaluating relevant factors that are critical to its international success through the perspective of the national elite athletes. An evaluation of the organizational effectiveness of the national sports governing bodies provides explanation to the poor performance of the country in major international competitions such as the Southeast Asian (SEA)Games. One of the most recent approaches used in measuring organizational effectiveness is the Sport Policy factors Leading to International Sporting Success (SPLISS) model. Th…

PurposeThis paper critically examines how female students at a Finnish business school understand gender in management.Design/methodology/approachThe analysis is based on female students' learning diaries from a basic management course.FindingsThe findings show how students respond to the topic of gender inequality through a neoliberal postfeminist discourse.
