Cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic insomnia inoccupationalhealth services: Analyses of outcomes upto24monthspost-treatment
2013
Abstract Objective Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is an effective treatment for persistent insomnia. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of and response patterns to CBT-I among daytime and shift workers with insomnia over a 24-month follow-up in occupational health services (OHS). Methods The participants were 59 media workers with chronic insomnia, of whom 69% were reached at 24-month follow-up. Sleep diaries and questionnaires over seven measurement points were used as outcomes. Trained OHS nurses led the CBT-I groups. The study design was a non-randomized group intervention. Results Self-perceived severity of insomnia, sleep-related dysfunctional…
Cognitive behavioral therapy for shift workers with chronic insomnia
2012
Abstract Objective Shift work is a challenge in the screening and treatment of chronic insomnia. The aim of this study was to examine the implementation and effectiveness of a cognitive behavioral group intervention for insomnia (CBT-I) among shift workers with chronic insomnia. We also studied whether insomnia symptoms and intervention effects differed on work days and days off. Methods The study design was a non-randomized group intervention, including a waiting period prior to CBT-I as a control condition. A total of 19 media workers who worked irregular hours and had non-organic insomnia with features of psychological insomnia completed the study. We followed up with the results for a p…
Shock wave therapy versus conventional surgery in the treatment of calcifying tendinitis of the shoulder.
2001
A prospective quasirandomized study was performed to compare the effects of surgical extirpation (Group I, 29 patients) with the outcome after high-energy extracorporeal shock wave therapy (Group II, 50 patients; 3,000 impulses of an energy flux density of 0.6 mJ/mm2) in patients with a chronic calcifying tendinitis in the supraspinatus tendon. Symptoms and demographic data of the two groups were comparable. According to the University of California Los Angeles Rating System, the mean score in Group I was 30 points with 75% good or excellent results after 12 months, and 32 points with 90% good or excellent results after 24 months. Radiologically, there was no calcific deposit in 85% of the …
Exercise loading history and femoral neck strength in a sideways fall: A three-dimensional finite element modeling study
2016
Over 90% of hip fractures are caused by falls. Due to a fall-induced impact on the greater trochanter, the posterior part of the thin superolateral cortex of the femoral neck is known to experience the highest stress, making it a fracture-prone region. Cortical geometry of the proximal femur, in turn, reflects a mechanically appropriate form with respect to habitual exercise loading. In this finite element (FE) modeling study, we investigated whether specific exercise loading history is associated with femoral neck structural strength and estimated fall-induced stresses along the femoral neck. One hundred and eleven three-dimensional (3D) proximal femur FE models for a sideways falling situ…
Gynecological adverse effects of natalizumab administration: Case report and review of the literature.
2018
Abstract Background Natalizumab is administered for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RR-MS) with high disease activity.Natalizumab therapy has been associated with adverse effects, such as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, liver damage, nasopharyngitis, urinary tract infection, urticaria, cephalgia, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, fever, rigidity, anxiety and gastroenteritis. Objective To describe a case of a woman with RR-MS who developed recurrent vaginitis on natalizumab administration. Methods Case report and review of the literature. Results The case of a 26-year-old Caucasian woman with RR-MS, who presented with recurrent vaginitis since the initiation of…
Prenatal diagnosis of a rhodopsin mutation using chemical cleavage of the mismatch
2002
Objective: Mutations of the rhodopsin gene are responsible for autosomal dominant or recessive retinitis pigmentosa (RP). The present study reports the first prenatal diagnosis performed on chorionic villi biopsy of a pregnant woman affected by a severe form of autosomal dominant transmitted RP, due to the Arg135Trp substitution. Methods: The rhodopsin gene was analysed by automated direct sequencing and, for the first time, by fluorescence-assisted mismatch analysis (FAMA). The latter is an inexpensive, rapid and particularly sensitive method, based on the chemical cleavage of the mismatch in heteroduplex DNA molecules marked with strand-specific fluorophores. Results: FAMA is a feasible p…
Combination of osteopontin and activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule as potent prognostic discriminators in HER2- and ER-negative breast cancer.
2010
Background: To analyse the discriminative impact of osteopontin (OPN) and activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule (ALCAM), combined with human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2) and oestrogen receptor (ER) in breast cancer. Methods: Osteopontin, ALCAM, HER2 and ER mRNA expression in breast cancer tissues of 481 patients were analysed (mRNA microarray analysis, kinetic RT–PCR). Hierarchical clustering was performed in training cohort A (N=100, adjuvant treatment) and validation cohorts B (N=200, no adjuvant treatment, low-risk) and C (N=181, adjuvant treatment, high-risk). Results: Negative/low ER and HER2, high OPN and low ALCAM mRNA expression helped to identify patients at particularly h…
Childhood maltreatment and sleep in children and adolescents: A systematic review and meta-analysis
2022
Childhood maltreatment is a global problem with the risk of serious health consequences for children and adolescents, including sleep problems. Former systematic reviews have examined the association between childhood maltreatment and sleep problems in adults, but no systematic review has investigated the literature on childhood maltreatment and sleep problems in childhood and adolescence. We published a protocol (PROSPERO: CRD42021225741) and conducted a systematic literature search using nine electronic databases. Upon duplicate removal, 1530 records were screened against the inclusion criteria, and 26 studies were included in the review. The most studied sleep outcomes were symptoms of i…
Beclomethasone dipropionate hydrofluoroalkane for the treatment of allergic rhinitis
2016
Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common respiratory disease, and its prevalence is increasing all over the world, both in adults and in children. Patients experience symptoms that may negatively impact on physical, social and psychological well-being. Hence, if left untreated, allergic rhinitis may significantly affect quality of life. Under current guidelines, intranasal corticosteroids are considered the most effective drugs and they are recommended as first-line therapy. Among the several corticosteroid intranasal sprays available, beclomethasone dipropionate is one of the most prescribed. Recently, new intranasal hydrofluoroalkane-propelled formulations with little or no impact on the ozone …
Effects of Omalizumab Treatment in Patients With Recalcitrant Nasal Polyposis and Mild Asthma: A Multicenter Retrospective Study
2021
Background Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a clinical entity with specific features that impacts significantly on patient quality of life (QoL). CRSwNP is often associated with asthma and is difficult to control and manage despite pharmacological and/or surgical treatment. Omalizumab, a monoclonal anti-IgE antibody, has emerged as a putative therapeutic option. Objective To evaluate the effects of omalizumab on nasal polyp (NP) size and QoL assessed by Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 (SNOT-22) in patients with recalcitrant CRSwNP and mild asthma. Methods A multicenter retrospective analysis of patient data from the Community of Valencia (Spain) was performed. Adult patients …
