The relevance of biographic narratives for social workers’ professional memory, reflexivity and identity
2020
The present article is about the use of biographic methods and oral history, and its contribution to developing processes of critical reflection and reflexivity. It is based on a set of oral data collected from Portuguese social workers who played an active role in the revolutionary phase during the transition from dictatorship to democracy in Portugal (following the 25th April 1974 military coup). The article explores how the use of biographic methods (integrated within a historical methodological framework), other than simply producing accounts of past experiences, allowed interviewees to re-capture, re-interpret and re-signify their own experiences in the light of changing professional …
Learner identity in EFL: An analysis of digital texts of identity in higher education
2018
This study explores learner identity (LI) in digital texts of identity (DTI) produced by college learners in English as a foreign language (EFL). In so doing, it aims to shed light on learners’ connections of their learning experiences across time and settings, and their impact on the various learner identities that form their LI. It also intends to elucidate how learners construct powerful learner identities in and through their digital discourses. To this end, 51 DTI were collected and scrutinized, following studies on LI, critical and poststructuralist discourse analysis, and “thematic” and “dialogic/performative” analysis within narrative research. Learners established connections betwe…
The gap between knowledge and belief: narrative, affect and students’ deeper learning in higher education
2021
One of the central challenges educators face today, especially in higher education, is the gap between warranted (domain-specific) knowledge and the prior beliefs students hold about certain concep...
Narratives as a tool to study personnel wellbeing in corporate mergers
2009
This article presents the methodological solutions used in a study investigating personnel wellbeing in the context of mergers and acquisitions in the Nordic electricity business. There have happened rapid changes in working conditions in general and in the electricity business today in the Nordic countries as on a global scale. As a result, the notion of a secure job with the same employer lasting a whole lifetime career seems to have lost its meaning also in the Finnish electricity distribution sector. This has challenged the traditional idea of wellbeing. We wanted to see how a corporate integration is experienced by those whom it affects most: namely, personnel at different levels of th…
An inquiry-based learning path to introduce modern physics in high-school
2018
Although Modern Physics (MP) is a scientific field of increasingly interest, due to its mathematical and conceptual difficulty, it was not generally taught in Italian high-schools. Recently, in order to reduce the gap between school curricula and modern technology, the Ministry of Education promoted the inclusion of MP in Italian secondary schools. MP hot topics produce interest and enthusiasm in learners at all ages, but to address this topic in high school in an effective way it is necessary to translate complex theories and highly-advanced experiments into an understandable language appreciated by students. In this contribution, we discuss an inquiry-driven learning sequence suitable to …
The Line: committing and commemorating ‘the crime without a name’
2018
This article analyses Gina Shmukler’s verbatim play The Line (2012) and argues for another look at the testimonies captured from witnesses, survivors and perpetrators of the violence targeting foreign and perceived as foreign persons in South Africa that escalated in 2008 and in 2015. It is a narrative analysis of the play that uses Gregory H. Stanton’s Ten Stages of Genocide model and the United Nations Convention on Genocide to investigate the theatrical representation of the violence. This account argues that the events that are captured in the play and that inspired it should be reconsidered as acts of genocide. In the absence of an official acknowledgement of the events as genocide, pe…
Investigating Teacher Pedagogical Content Knowledge Of Scientific Inquiry
2014
This paper analyses the scientific inquiry in the context of modelling physical systems and point out some related teaching/learning strategies. Two relevant points are also discussed: i)- the different representations of scientific inquiry held by a sample of secondary school physics teachers and their competencies in conducting investigations aimed at solving scientific problems; ii)- what kind of supports can be supplied to teachers in order to modify their misconceptions about scientific inquiry and develop adequate competences related to Pedagogical Content Knowledge of Scientific Inquiry. The topic will be analysed in the light of some preliminary results of a course for in-service ph…
Impact of IBSE Methods and IBSE Materials on Student/Teacher Learning
2014
This study reports on the use of Inquiry-based science education (IBSE) materials and activities on the concept of Sound that have been used to teach lower and upper secondary school students by teachers who have participated in IBSE teacher education (Slovakia, Italy) as well as to teach pre-service teachers (Ireland). An IBSE method has been adopted by the ESTABLISH project (FP7, 2010-2013) to promote the implementation of innovative teaching and learning approaches for student-led inquiry based activities in the classroom. An IBSE approach is considered to encourage students´ active involvement in their learning compared to traditional methods. This project has developed teaching and lea…
An approach to the concept of statistical distribution: a pedagogical path based on Guided Inquiry
2014
This paper describes a teaching approach to the concept of distribution that uses a specific activity related to the field of statistical mechanics. The concept of velocity distribution of a particle system is dealt with using an Inquiry Based approach involving an experimental examination of Maxwell’s Distribution. Some outcomes of a teaching experiment are described.
In particolare, l’articolo presenta alcuni mo…
