On cosmic quantum tunneling from “nothing”
2015
We extend to a general Λ-Eriedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (ΛFLRW) a previous result by Vilenkin and others according to which a closed de Sitter universe could be created from "nothing". More specifically, our main result is that only the closed ΛFLRW universe (but not the open and flat ones) could be created from a corresponding instanton, that is, from the corresponding solution with signature +4 of the Einstein field equations. Before getting this result the suitable corresponding instantons are calculated. The result is in accordance with previous results by another authors obtained by different methods.
Q7-branes and their coupling to IIB supergravity
2007
We show how, by making use of a new basis of the IIB supergravity axion-dilaton coset, SL(2,R)/SO(2), 7-branes that belong to different conjugacy classes of the duality group SL(2,R) naturally couple to IIB supergravity with appropriate source terms characterized by an SL(2,R) charge matrix Q. The conjugacy classes are determined by the value of the determinant of Q. The (p,q) 7-branes are the branes in the conjugacy class detQ = 0. The 7-branes in the conjugacy class detQ > 0 are labelled by three numbers (p,q,r) which parameterize the matrix Q and will be called Q7-branes. We construct the full bosonic Wess--Zumino term for the Q7-branes. In order to realize a gauge invariant coupling …

Resummation of anisotropic quartic oscillator. Crossover from anisotropic to isotropic large-order behavior
1996
We present an approximative calculation of the ground-state energy for the anisotropic anharmonic oscillator Using an instanton solution of the isotropic action $\delta = 0$, we obtain the imaginary part of the ground-state energy for small negative $g$ as a series expansion in the anisotropy parameter $\delta$. From this, the large-order behavior of the $g$-expansions accompanying each power of $\delta$ are obtained by means of a dispersion relation in $g$. These $g$-expansions are summed by a Borel transformation, yielding an approximation to the ground-state energy for the region near the isotropic limit. This approximation is found to be excellent in a rather wide region of $\delta$ aro…
Cosmic implications of a low-scale solution to the axion domain wall problem
2019
The post-inflationary breaking of Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry can lead to the cosmic domain wall catastrophe. In this Letter we show how to avoid domain walls implementing the Instanton Interference Effect (IIE) with a new interaction which itself breaks PQ symmetry and confines at an energy scale smaller than $\Lambda_{QCD}$. We give a general description of the mechanism and consider its cosmological implications and constraints within a minimal model. Contrary to other mechanisms we do not require an inverse phase transition neither fine-tuned bias terms. Incidentally, the mechanism leads to the introduction of new self-interacting dark matter candidates and the possibility of producing g…
Large Effects from Small QCD Instantons: Making Soft Bombs at Hadron Colliders
2020
It is a common belief that the last missing piece of the Standard Model of particles physics was found with the discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider. However, there remains a major prediction of quantum tunnelling processes mediated by instanton solutions in the Yang-Mills theory, that is still untested in the Standard Model. The direct experimental observation of instanton-induced processes, which are a consequence of the non-trivial vacuum structure of the Standard Model and of quantum tunnelling in QFT, would be a major breakthrough in modern particle physics. In this paper, we present for the first time a full calculation of QCD instanton-induced processes in proton…
Instantons and theΔI=1/2Rule
2001
The instanton-induced interaction leads to a significant enhancement of the Ao weak amplitude determining the DeltaI = 1/2 rule, through the contribution of operators with dimension d = 9, as we show in the weak K--> pi(pi) decay.
Extended van Royen-Weisskopf formalism for lepton-antilepton meson decay widths within non-relativistic quark models
2001
The classical van Royen-Weisskopf formula for the decay width of a meson into a lepton-antilepton pair is modified in order to include non-zero quark momentum contributions within the meson as well as relativistic effects. Besides, a phenomenological electromagnetic density for quarks is introduced. The meson wave functions are obtained from two different models: a chiral constituent quark model and a quark potential model including instanton effects. The modified van Royen-Weisskopf formula is found to improve systematically the results for the widths, giving an overall good description of all known decays.
Induced scalar potentials for hypermultiplets
1997
Charged BPS hypermultiplets can develop a non-trivial self-interaction in the Coulomb branch of an N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory, whereas neutral BPS hypermultiplets in the Higgs branch may also have a non-trivial self-interaction in the presence of Fayet-Iliopoulos terms. The exact hypermultiplet low-energy effective action (LEEA) takes the form of the non-linear sigma-model (NLSM) with a hyper-K"ahler metric. A non-trivial scalar potential is also quantum-mechanically generated at non-vanishing central charges, either perturbatively (Coulomb branch), or non-perturbatively (Higgs branch). We calculate the effective scalar potentials for (i) a single charged hypermultiplet in the Coulomb …
Conifold Transitions and Mirror Symmetry for Calabi-Yau Complete Intersections in Grassmannians
1997
In this paper we show that conifold transitions between Calabi-Yau 3-folds can be used for the construction of mirror manifolds and for the computation of the instanton numbers of rational curves on complete intersection Calabi-Yau 3-folds in Grassmannians. Using a natural degeneration of Grassmannians $G(k,n)$ to some Gorenstein toric Fano varieties $P(k,n)$ with conifolds singularities which was recently described by Sturmfels, we suggest an explicit mirror construction for Calabi-Yau complete intersections $X \subset G(k,n)$ of arbitrary dimension. Our mirror construction is consistent with the formula for the Lax operator conjectured by Eguchi, Hori and Xiong for gravitational quantum c…
