Shifting to climate change aware cities to facilitate the city resilience implementation

2020

Abstract Climate change (CC) is one of the most urgent threats to modern societies, having direct and indirect consequences on the rapid growth of urban areas. Cities are attempting to both reduce their impact on the environment and build resilience to be able to face the irreversible effects of CC through plans and strategies. However, barriers, such as the fact that cities are complex systems and the uncertainty posed by CC have led to less engaged and committed city stakeholders, which have hampered the operationalisation of city resilience. In this context, developing city stakeholders awareness has been demonstrated to be an effective way to put an end to passive behaviour and help tra…

An Agile methodology for Manufacturing Control Systems development

2007

Robotized manufacturing cells are required more and more often to process high variety of short life-cycle product. This increases the need for methods and techniques for easy reconfiguration of software programs running in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), i.e., devices able to control manufacturing systems. PLCs run embedded code characterized by a procedural nature that does not make it quite reconfigurable. In this paper we propose an AGIle COntrol System Development (AGICOSD) methodology that uses various practices of Agile software development methodologies and the Design By Contract (DBC) practice for modeling and programming manufacturing control systems. In this context we prop…

First Experiences on an Accurate SPH Method on GPUs

2017

It is well known that the standard formulation of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics is usually poor when scattered data distribution is considered or when the approximation near the boundary occurs. Moreover, the method is computational demanding when a high number of data sites and evaluation points are employed. In this paper an enhanced version of the method is proposed improving the accuracy and the efficiency by using a HPC environment. Our implementation exploits the processing power of GPUs for the basic computational kernel resolution. The performance gain demonstrates the method to be accurate and suitable to deal with large sets of data.

The Raising Factor, That Great Unknown. A Guided Activity for Undergraduate Students

2020

In the first years of their economics degree programs, students will face many problems successfully dealing with a range of subjects with quantitative content. Specifically, in the field of statistics, difficulties to reach some basic academic achievements have been observed. Hence, a continuing challenge for statistics teachers is how to make this subject more appealing for students through the design and implementation of new teaching methodologies. The latter tend to follow two main approaches. On the one hand, it is useful for the learning process to propose practical activities that can connect theoretical concepts with real applications in the economic context. On the other hand, we …

A systematic narrative review of prosociality in educational leadership

2018

Organizational scholars have vigorously and long studied being prosocial in defining ‘prosociality’ as motivation, behavior, and impact to help or benefit others. This study attempts to provide an overview of previous studies that have approached the elements of being prosocial in educational leadership contexts. However, most of the prosocial elements in education are not explicitly defined as prosociality and have not yet been systematically studied. Thus, this study explored the research questions: (a) What elements could be involved in prosociality within educational leadership? (b) Who could be involved in the process of prosociality in educational leadership? The final corpus of this …

Do graphical overviews facilitate or hinder comprehension in hypertext?

2009

Educational hypertexts usually include graphical overviews, conveying the structure of the text schematically with the aim of fostering comprehension. Despite the claims about their relevance, there is currently no consensus on the impact that hypertext overviews have on the reader's comprehension. In the present paper we have explored how hypertext overviews might affect comprehension with regard to (a) the time at which students read the overview and (b) the hypertext difficulty. The results from two eye-tracking studies revealed that reading a graphical overview at the beginning of the hypertext is related to an improvement in the participant's comprehension of quite difficult hypertexts…

TeamSim: An Educational Micro-World for the Teaching of Team Dynamics

2008

In this paper we present an educational micro-world in which a learner can manipulate variables affecting the efficiency with which a team adapts to its environment. These include the structure of hierarchical relations within the team, the structure of the communications network, and other environmental parameters. Using the micro-world, the learner can design experiments (simulations) exploring notions in the dynamics of small groups. A freeware version of TeamSim is available from http:// laral.istc.cnr.it/gigliotta/.

Analysis of the influence of processor hidden registers on the accuracy of fault injection techniques

2004

Modern processors tend to increase the number of registers, being part of them not accessible by the instruction set. Traditionally, the effect of faults in these hidden registers has not been considered during system validation using fault injection. In this paper, a study of the importance of faults in hidden registers is performed. Firstly, we have analysed the sensitivity of hidden registers to faults in combinational logic. In a second phase, we have analysed the impact of the faults occurred in hidden registers on system behaviour. A broad set of permanent and transient faults have been injected into the models of two typical commercial microcontrollers, using a VHDL-based fault injec…

Unveiling the needs of students who stutter in the language skills - a study on anxiety and stuttering in EFL learning

2019

The aim of this study is to discuss the needs of learners who stutter (LWS) in the skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English as a foreign language (EFL) learning based on their levels of anxiety, and their experiences as individuals who stutter in the process of learning this language. To this end, the anxiety of these students (n = 16) in the foreign language was measured using the Foreign language classroom anxiety scale (FLCAS), and the Specific language skills anxiety scale (SLSAS), whilst their experiences were elicited through semi-structured interviews. Their foreign language anxiety (FLA) levels were then compared to those obtained from a control group of non-st…
