Evaluating End-user Support : Validating the Use of Multiple Media in a CSCW Application
2006
Human-centred views on information systems are gaining more and more attention in IS community. The need to evaluate information systems from such a perspective is thus evident. In this paper, we exploit our earlier developed theoretical framework for evaluating end-user support in information systems, and demonstrate its usage in validating the use of multiple communication and collaboration media in a CSCW application. The evaluation is performed in terms of user perception in ISD process, users’ role in organizational information processing, and users’ behavioural nuances. Our study shows that a context specific theoretical framework is useful in validating the empirical results of syste…
Teaching grammar in grades 7 through 9 : an analysis of English and Swedish L2 textbooks
2013
Kieliopin opettaminen on ollut osa vieraiden kielten opetusta niin kauan kuin niitä on opiskeltu. Kieliopin tuntemus kuuluu kielitaitoon ja sen hyvä hallinta mahdollistaa viestin perillemenon vaativissakin kommunikaatiotilanteissa. Suurin osa vieraiden kielten opettajista käyttää opetuksessaan oppikirjoja, joten niiden merkitys on suuri oppilaan kielitaidon kehittymiselle. Siksi on tärkeää tutkia, miten oppikirjoissa kielioppia opetetaan. Tässä tutkimuksessa analysoitiin kieliopin opettamisen näkökulmasta kahta englannin ja kahta ruotsin yläkoulun oppikirjasarjaa, jotka on julkaistu vuosina 2006-12. Kieliopin esittämistavat, käytetyt esimerkit rakenteen muodosta, merkityksestä ja käyttötila…
The dark side of the moon : high school students' perceptions of grammar instruction
2013
Keskeiset tutkimuskysymykset olivat a) millaisia…

The Influence of Instructional Practices on Reading Motivation in Finland
2018
Although the differences between individuals in language and literacy skills and motivation to read start before entering school, teachers and their instructional practices play an important role in the development of reading skills and the various aspects of motivation, especially children’s interest in reading. Interest in reading has been reported to contribute to the reading activity and to the amount of reading which, in turn, promote students’ reading performance. It has been assumed that children’s previous success with learning the basics of reading has provided them with positive feedback about the learning situation, thereby strengthening their interest in reading. Teachers and th…
Study of explicit instruction and structured inquiry methods on knowledge acquisition and conceptual change in science learning
2013
International audience; This study compares two pedagogical methods: explicit instruction and structured inquiry methods. We question the effectiveness of the two learning methods to acquire scientific knowledge and to modify learner conceptions. Do explicit instruction and structured inquiry methods have the same impact on the learning of science? If not, why?The results of this work show that explicit instruction and structured inquiry methods increase strongly acquisition of knowledge and improve weakness conception. So these two methods are same positive effects on acquisition of scientific knowledge but they are also the same negative results on evolution of conceptions because the conc…
Analysis of leadership dynamics in educational settings during times of external and internal change
2017
Background: The article concerns the tensions that can arise during demanding external, and consequential internal changes and considers how educational leadership is able to respond to them. Leadership is here understood as a collaborative endeavour, producing shared sense-making in situations of tension. Purpose: The main research question was: what kinds of leadership dynamics underlie situations of tension brought about by external and internal change? The sub-question was: what kind of micro-level sense-making processes, argued to be the true source of change, assist in revealing these dynamics? Programme: Educational organisations increasingly face demanding external changes, such as …
Les débats devant la commission d'esclavage
2010
On March 4, 1848, thanks to the decisive impetus given by Victor Schoelcher, the principle of the abolition of slavery was proclaimed by decree and a « Commission for the preparation of an act of immediate emancipation in all the colonies of the Republic » was established. Like the commission de Broglie under the July Monarchy, the commission, chaired by Schoelcher, provided a huge work of documentation, information and reflection on the settlements, studying also the organization of the English colonies. However, unlike the previous one, the commission of 1848 required the immediate abolition of slavery (Decree of April 27, 1848), without waiting for the election of the National Assembly, …
Transnationalisation and Nordic higher education - Tensions and possibilities in educational policy
2014
The recent developments in Nordic higher education policy are closely linked with global tendencies, which are in turn reacted to at national and local levels. The financial crisis, massification of higher education, and the attachment to transnational, mainly European policies have set the background for new tendencies in education governance. New governance patterns are the outcome of transnational pressures, which are domesticated at the national level. Thus, these transnational tendencies are (re‐)constructed for different transnational, national and local purposes. This thematic issue analyses how the Nordic countries have reacted to these tendencies, tensions and possibilities. nonPee…
