A model of oil burnout from glass fabric

1997

A mathematical model is proposed for the process of the removal (by burning) of oil contained in a glass fibre insulation fabric manufactured in Latvia. The small aspect ratio of the fabric allows simplifications to the modelling which reduce the problem to a single nonlinear ordinary differential equation. When the effects of reflected radiation are also included, the differential equation is supplemented by two integral equations. Predictions of the position of the ‘burning zone’ accord well with observations made at the factory. The effect of the inclusion of extra heating chambers is also examined, and it is found that the temperature gradient in the fabric may be greatly decreased in t…

Synaptic tetraspan vesicle membrane proteins are conserved but not needed for synaptogenesis and neuronal function in Caenorhabditis elegans

2006

Tetraspan vesicle membrane proteins (TVPs) comprise a major portion of synaptic vesicle proteins, yet their contribution to the synaptic vesicle cycle is poorly understood. TVPs are grouped in three mammalian gene families: physins, gyrins, and secretory carrier-associated membrane proteins (SCAMPs). In Caenorhabditis elegans , only a single member of each of these families exists. These three nematode TVPs colocalize to the same vesicular compartment when expressed in mammalian cells, suggesting that they could serve overlapping functions. To examine their function, C. elegans null mutants were isolated for each gene, and a triple mutant was generated. Surprisingly, these animals develop …

Finite-size effects of Kirkwood–Buff integrals from molecular simulations

2017

The modelling of thermodynamic properties of liquids from local density fluctuations is relevant to many chemical and biological processes. The Kirkwood–Buff (KB) theory connects the microscopic structure of isotropic liquids with macroscopic properties such as partial derivatives of activity coefficients, partial molar volumes and compressibilities. Originally, KB integrals were formulated for open and infinite systems which are difficult to access with standard Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. Recently, KB integrals for finite and open systems were formulated (J Phys Chem Lett. 2013;4:235). From the scaling of KB integrals for finite subvolumes, embedded in larger reservoirs, with the…

Benefits of solvent concentration pulses in retention time modelling of liquid chromatography

2019

The advantages and disadvantages of the use of isocratic experimental designs including transient increments of organic solvent (i.e., pulses) in the mobile phase(s) of lowest elution strength are explored with modelling purposes. For retained solutes, this type of mixed design offers similar or better predictive capability than gradient designs, shorter measurement time than pure isocratic designs, and retention model parameters that agree with those derived from pure isocratic experiments, with similar uncertainties. The predicted retention times are comparable to those offered by models adjusted from pure isocratic designs, and the solvent waste is appreciably lower. Under a practical st…

High performance algorithms based on a new wawelet expansion for time dependent acoustics obstale scattering

2007

This paper presents a highly parallelizable numerical method to solve time dependent acoustic obstacle scattering problems. The method proposed is a generalization of the ``operator expansion method" developed by Recchioni and Zirilli [SIAM J.~Sci.~Comput., 25 (2003), 1158-1186]. The numerical method proposed reduces, via a perturbative approach, the solution of the scattering problem to the solution of a sequence of systems of first kind integral equations. The numerical solution of these systems of integral equations is challenging when scattering problems involving realistic obstacles and small wavelengths are solved. A computational method has been developed to solve these challenging p…

Boundedness and compactness of operators related to time-frequency analysis

2018

LEM for twisted re-entrant angle sections

2014

In this paper an innovative numerical method named as line element-less method, LEM, for finding solution of torsion problem has been extended to all shaped sections, including sections possessing re-entrant angles at their boundary. The response solution in terms of shear stress field or Prandtl function or warping function in all domain and for any kind of domain with arbitrary contour, may be performed quickly, calculating line integrals only. The method takes full advantage of the theory of analytic complex function and is robust in the sense that returns exact solution if this exists. Numerical implementation of LEM has been developed using Mathematica software without resorting to any…

We prove that for each Bochner integrable function f there exists a trajectory yielding the Bochner integral of f, and that on infinite dimensional Banach spaces there exist Pettis integrable functions f such that no trajectory yields the Pettis integral of f.

A new rotational integral formula for intrinsic volumes in space forms

2010

A new rotational version of Crofton's formula is derived for the intrinsic volumes of a domain Y in a space form. More precisely, a functional is defined on the intersection between Y and a totally geodesic submanifold (plane) through a fixed point, such that the rotational average of this functional is equal to the intrinsic volumes of Y. Particular cases of interest in stereology are considered for the Euclidean case. © 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
