Developing mixed methods research in sport and exercise psychology: potential contributions of a critical realist perspective

2020

Notwithstanding diverse opinions and debates about mixing methods, mixed methods research (MMR) is increasingly being used in sport and exercise psychology. In this paper, we describe MMR trends within leading sport and exercise psychology journals and explore critical realism as a possible underpinning framework for conducting MMR. Our meta-study of recent empirical mixed methods studies published in 2017–2019 indicates that eight (36%) of the 22 MMR studies explicitly stated a paradigmatic position (five drew on pragmatism, two switched paradigms between qualitative and quantitative elements of the study, and one was situated in relativist-interpretivism). The remaining 14 (64%) studies d…

Incoherent Yet Still Moral? Followers’ Perceptions of Their Leaders’ Integrity

2022

The aim of this study was to broaden the current understanding of leader integrity by applying a social-cognitive process model to leaders’ moral decision-making. Leaders (n = 223) were classified into different integrity styles (informational, normative, or diffuse-avoidant) based on their personal descriptions of how they approach moral questions and make moral decisions at work. We then investigated how followers (n = 963) perceived these leaders’ integrity (moral behavior, behavioral integrity, and consistency) and their leader-member exchange (LMX) quality by using a hierarchical leader-follower sample. Followers evaluated normative leaders to show the highest amount of consistency com…

Oral health-related quality of life of patients after solid organ transplantation is not affected by oral conditions:results of a multicentre cross-s…

2020

Background This multicentre cross-sectional study aimed in examination of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients after solid organ transplantation (SOT). Material and Methods Patients after SOT (liver, lung and heart) at one out of three German centers (Goettingen, Essen, Leipzig) were included. For comparison, a healthy control (HC) was recruited. OHRQoL was assessed by German short form of oral health impact profile (OHIP G14). Oral examination comprised: decayed-, missing- and filled-teeth index (DMF-T), remaining teeth and periodontitis severity. Results In total, 196 patients after SOT and 130 HC with comparable age, gender and smoking habits were included (p>0.05). D…

“Song of Life”: Results of a multicenter randomized trial on the effects of biographical music therapy in palliative care

2021

Background: Awareness for the importance of psychological and spiritual needs in patients with terminal diseases has increased in recent years, but randomized trials on the effects of psychosocial interventions are still rare. Aim: To investigate the efficacy of the “Song of Life” music therapy intervention regarding the emotional and psycho-spiritual dimensions of quality of life. Design: Patients were randomly assigned to either “Song of Life” or a relaxation intervention. “Song of Life” is a novel three-session music therapy intervention working with a biographically meaningful song. Primary outcome was the improvement in psychological quality of life. Secondary outcomes included spiritu…

Risk Stratification by nrTMS Language Mapping

2017

Resecting language-eloquent brain lesions is a major challenge in neurosurgery since we need to weight the risks of worsening the patients’ functional integrity and achieving a maximum safe resection. Although relevant functional brain structures can be identified intraoperatively by direct cortical mapping during awake surgery, a preoperative identification of functional anatomy is recommended in order to gauge surgical risks, evaluate resectability, plan the surgical approach, and identify potential starting points for intraoperative stimulation mapping.

Hydrolytic enzyme activity of Paenibacillus sp. strain B2 and effects of the antagonistic bacterium on cell integrity of two soil-borne pathogenic fu…

2000

Paenibacillus sp. strain B2, isolated from the mycorrhizosphere of Sorghum bicolor and having an antagonistic activity towards soil-borne fungal pathogens, possessed extracellular cellulolytic, proteolytic, chitinolytic and pectinolytic enzyme activities. The eventual role of these lytic enzymes in cellular interactions between Paenibacillus sp. strain B2 and Phytophthora parasitica and Fusariumoxysporum was investigated by electron microscopy and molecular cytology. Electron microscopic observations showed that the presence of Paenibacillus sp. strain B2 resulted in disorganisation of cell walls and/or cell contents of P. parasitica and F. oxysporum. However, when P. parasitica was treated…

CMC is more than a measure of corticospinal tract integrity in acute stroke patients

2021

In healthy subjects, motor cortex activity and electromyographic (EMG) signals from contracting contralateral muscle show coherence in the beta (15-30 Hz) range. Corticomuscular coherence (CMC) is considered a sign of functional coupling between muscle and brain. Based on prior studies, CMC is altered in stroke, but functional significance of this finding has remained unclear. Here, we examined CMC in acute stroke patients and correlated the results with clinical outcome measures and corticospinal tract (CST) integrity estimated with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). During isometric contraction of the extensor carpi radialis muscle, EMG and magnetoencephalographic oscillatory signals were re…

Power Line Monitoring through Data Integrity Analysis with Q-Learning Based Data Analysis Network

2022

To monitor and handle big data obtained from electrical, electronic, electro-mechanical, and other equipment linked to the power grid effectively and efficiently, it is important to monitor them continually to gather information on power line integrity. We propose that data transmission analysis and data collection from tools like digital power meters may be used to undertake predictive maintenance on power lines without the need for specialized hardware like power line modems and synthetic data streams. Neural network models such as deep learning may be used for power line integrity analysis systems effectively, safely, and reliably. We adopt Q-learning based data analysis network for anal…

Sex-specific signatures of intrinsic hippocampal networks and regional integrity underlying cognitive status in multiple sclerosis

2021

Abstract The hippocampus is an anatomically compartmentalized structure embedded in highly wired networks that are essential for cognitive functions. The hippocampal vulnerability has been postulated in acute and chronic neuroinflammation in multiple sclerosis, while the patterns of occurring inflammation, neurodegeneration or compensation have not yet been described. Besides focal damage to hippocampal tissue, network disruption is an important contributor to cognitive decline in multiple sclerosis patients. We postulate sex-specific trajectories in hippocampal network reorganization and regional integrity and address their relationship to markers of neuroinflammation, cognitive/memory per…

Continuum: A spatiotemporal data model to represent and qualify filiation relationships

2013

International audience; This work introduces an ontology-based spatio-temporal data model to represent entities evolving in space and time. A dynamic phenomenon generates a complex relationship network between the entities involved in the process. At the abstract level, the relationships can be identity or topological filiations. The existence of an identity filiation depends on whether the object changes its identity or not. On the other hand, topological filiations are based exclusively on the spatial component, like in the case of growth, reduction, merging or splitting. When combining identity and topological filiations, six filiation relationships are obtained, forming a second abstrac…
