Promoting scientific integrity through open science in health psychology: results of the Synergy Expert Meeting of the European health psychology soc…

2021

The current article describes a position statement and recommendations for actions that need to be taken to develop best practices for promoting scientific integrity through open science in health psychology endorsed at a Synergy Expert Group Meeting. Sixteen Synergy Meeting participants specializing in health, social and behavioural psychology convened to discuss priority issues regarding scientific integrity promotion and open science in health psychology. The group developed a set of recommendations for researchers, gatekeepers, and research end-users. The group process followed a nominal group technique and voting system to elicit and decide on the most relevant and topical issues. Seve…

Multiphysics Optimization for First Wall Design Enhancement in Water-Cooled Breeding Blankets

2021

Abstract The commercial feasibility of the first fusion power plant generation adopting D-T plasma is strongly dependent upon the self-sustainability in terms of tritium fuelling. Within such a kind of reactor, the component selected to house the tritium breeding reactions is the breeding blanket, which is further assigned to heat power removal and radiation shielding functions. As a consequence of both its role and position, the breeding blanket is heavily exposed to both surface and volumetric heat loads and, hence, its design requires a typical multiphysics approach, from the neutronics to the thermo-mechanics. During last years, a great deal of effort has been put in the optimization of…

The Topological Processor for the future ATLAS Level-1 Trigger: From design to commissioning

2014

The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is designed to measure decay properties of high energetic particles produced in the proton-proton collisions. During its first run, the LHC collided proton bunches at a frequency of 20 MHz, and therefore the detector required a Trigger system to efficiently select events down to a manageable event storage rate of about 400 Hz. By 2015 the LHC instantaneous luminosity will be increased up to 3×1034cm−2s−1: this represents an unprecedented challenge faced by the ATLAS Trigger system. To cope with the higher event rate and efficiently select relevant events from a physics point of view, a new element will be included in the Level-1 Trigger …

Empowerment – a Double Edged Sword?

2015

The concept of empowerment is a democratic tool and a logical next step in the evolution of public administration. In this article we explore the possibility of this concept to be used as a tool of unconventional warfare under a certain set of conditions. The carried out case study of the recent events in Ukraine, Crimea allows to conclude that empowerment can indeed be used to compromise the territorial integrity of a sovereign country.

The Correlation of the Principles of International Law in the Context of Nagorno-Karabagh Conflict Resolution

2009

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is one of the most bloody and large-scale conflicts in the post-Soviet region. This is an old conflict with its own genesis and internal dynamics. The conflict is considered to be a real obstacle to the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Different political and economic factors play a major role in the regulation of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: the geostrategic interests of regional hegemons and the question of who controls its oil riches. Not surprisingly, the process of conflict regulation in Nagorno-Karabakh is a highly politicized issue. To date, little or no attention has been paid to the legal aspects of the conflict, and the pos…

The impact of foreign language mediated teaching on teachers’ sense of professional integrity in the CLIL classroom

2011

Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) has received significant interest in recent years as a practical means of creating a plurilingual European community. A key feature of CLIL is the non-native speaking teacher responsible for developing learners’ content and language knowledge in a foreign language mediated environment. Teachers often enter the CLIL classroom with established expertise in either content or language learning; however, the impact of entering the foreign language mediated environment is little explored in existing literature. This investigative research is based on six teacher interviews intended to access the teachers’ own understanding of how foreign language me…

Lung fixation for the preservation of air spaces.

2004

The procedures for the fixation of entire lungs of small rodents are presented together with various techniques used to verify the structural integrity of the lung tissue. To achieve this, the lungs were dissected out from rats and mice killed by ether overdose. The specimens were rinsed with isotonic saline and fixation solution under low vacuum conditions. After fixation, they were dried using alcohol and stored in a noncollapsed state (i.e., state of inhalation). Light and scanning electron microscopy as well as magnetic resonance imaging using hyperpolarized 3He were employed to verify the intact state on interalveolar septa and walls of smaller bronchi as well as accessibility of the a…

DICER and ZRF1 contribute to chromatin decondensation during nucleotide excision repair

2016

Abstract Repair of damaged DNA relies on the recruitment of DNA repair factors in a well orchestrated manner. As a prerequisite, the chromatin needs to be decondensed by chromatin remodelers to allow for binding of repair factors and for DNA repair to occur. Recent studies have implicated members of the SWI/SNF and INO80 families as well as PARP1 in nucleotide excision repair (NER). In this study, we report that the endonuclease DICER is implicated in chromatin decondensation during NER. In response to UV irradiation, DICER is recruited to chromatin in a ZRF1-mediated manner. The H2A–ubiquitin binding protein ZRF1 and DICER together impact on the chromatin conformation via PARP1. Moreover, …
