The basis of a successful structure analysis is to obtain reliable intensities. In the field of electron crystallography intensity data can be collected on-line with a CCD-camera as well as off-line using image plates or film material. Whereas image plates are read out with a laser, film material is analysed via a densitometer or digitised using a CCD-camera or a scanner. To image nontransparent samples we have utilized a special type of scanning-probe microscope that is referred to here as a reflection scanning microscope. The reflection scanning microscope provides a method for producing a scanned point light source as well as a system for collecting the light that is reflected by the sample. The system, which uses an optical fiber coupler, is easily installed on an existing photon scanning tunneling microscope. A light-scattering photometer for use at elevated pressures

A new light scattering photometer has been designed in order to perform light-scattering measurements at various temperatures and under pressures of 1–1000 atm. Since the scattering angle is constant (90°C), the dimensions of the dissolved molecules are determined by measuring the intensity at different wavelengths. The method of measurement, the calibration of the instrument, and the treatment of data are described. By a series of test measurements on polystyrene in trans-decalin solutions it is shown that one obtains reliable results and finds considerable effects of pressure on the radius of gyration and the fundamental thermodynamic properties of the system.

Long-term population dynamics and ecology of the abundant but non-dominant phytoplankton species of the shallow hypertrophic lake the Albufera of Valencia (Spain) are described for the period 1980–1988. The lake is used as a reservoir for the surrounding ricefield cultivation. It is continuously dominated by three filamentous blue-green algae, Planktothrix agardhii, Pseudanabaena galeata and Geitlerinema sp. Horizontal differences of the phytoplankton were less important than annual and seasonal variations. We introduce balanced detection in combination with simultaneous complementary illumination in a single-pixel architecture. With this novel detection scheme we are able to recover a real-time video stream in presence of ambient light.

Melanoma is a melanocytic tumor that is responsible for the most skin cancer-related deaths. By contrast, seborrheic keratosis (SK) is a very common benign lesion with a clinical picture that may resemble melanoma. We used a multispectral imaging device to distinguish these two entities, with the use of autofluorescence imaging with 405 nm and diffuse reflectance imaging with 525 and 660 narrow-band LED illumination. We analyzed intensity descriptors of the acquired images. These included ratios of intensity values of different channels, standard deviation and minimum/maximum values of intensity of the lesions. Sensitivity of SHG-FROG for the characterization of ultrahigh-repetition-rate telecommunication laser sources

International audience; We analyze experimentally the sensitivity of second-harmonic generation frequency-resolved optical gating (SHG-FROG) for the complete intensity and phase characterization of both a sinusoidal beat signal and a train of 1.3 ps pulses at a repetition rate of 160 GHz at 1550 nm. Using a commercially-available optical spectrum analyzer in the SHG-FROG set-up, incident pulses with energies of only 125 and 190 fJ, which correspond to the beat signal and the 1.3 ps pulse train, respectively, have been accurately characterized.

Introduction/Purpose: Physical activity and sedentary time may associate with physical fitness and body composition. Yet, there exists some observational studies that have investigated the associations of device-based measures of sedentary time and physical activity (PA) with cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and body composition but associations with muscular fitness (MF) are less studied.Methods: Objective sedentary time and physical activity was measured by a hip worn accelerometer from 415 young adult men (age: mean 26, standard deviation 7 years).
