Oxygen uptake kinetics and energy system's contribution around maximal lactate steady state swimming intensity
2017
Made available in DSpace on 2018-11-26T17:20:55Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2017-02-28 Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Ministry of Education of Brazil The purpose of this study was to examine the oxygen uptake ((V) over dotO(2)) kinetics and the energy systems' contribution at 97.5, 100 and 102.5% of the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) swimming intensity. Ten elite female swimmers performed three-to-five 30 min submaximal constant swimming bouts at imposed paces for the determination of the swimming velocity (v) at 100% MLSS based on a 7 x 200 m intermittent incremental protocol until voluntary exhaustion to find the v associated…
The Effect of Different High-Intensity Periodization Models on Endurance Adaptations
2016
Purpose: This study aimed to compare the effects of three different high-intensity training (HIT) models, balanced for total load but differing in training plan progression, on endurance adaptations. Methods: Sixty-three cyclists (peak oxygen uptake (V˙O2peak) 61.3 ± 5.8 mL·kg−1·min−1) were randomized to three training groups and instructed to follow a 12-wk training program consisting of 24 interval sessions, a high volume of low-intensity training, and laboratory testing. The increasing HIT group (n = 23) performed interval training as 4 × 16 min in weeks 1–4, 4 × 8 min in weeks 5–8, and 4 × 4 min in weeks 9–12. The decreasing HIT group (n = 20) performed interval sessions in the opposite…
EFFECTS OF THE MULTIPLE INTERNAL REFLECTION AND SAMPLE THICKNESS CHANGES ON DETERMINATION OF ELECTRO-OPTIC COEFFICIENT VALUES OF A POLYMER FILM
2012
New nonlinear optical (NLO) active organic materials are appealing candidates for optoelectronic and photonic technologies. For the evaluation of new NLO polymer materials for applicability in the mentioned technologies, the most important criteria are their electro-optic (EO) coefficients. We have implemented the Mach–Zehnder interferometric (MZI) method for the determination of EO coefficients of thin organic films. Despite the fact that other multiple optical methods for the determination of thin film EO coefficients are known, the MZI method has been chosen because this particular technique has high sensitivity to phase and intensity modulations in the sample arm of an interferometer an…
Organic carbon, water repellency and soil stability to slaking under different crops and managements: a case study at aggregate and intra-aggregate s…
2014
This research studies the distribution of organic C and intensity of water repellency in soil aggregates with different size and in the interior of aggregates from Mediterranean soils under different crops (apricot, citrus and wheat) and management (con- 5 ventional tilling and no tilling/mulching). For this, undisturbed aggregates were sampled and carefully divided in size fractions (0.25–0.5, 0.5–1, 1–2, 2–5, 5–10 and 10–15 mm) or peeled to obtain separated aggregate layers (exterior, transitional and interior). Organic C content in the fine earth fraction of soils under different crops did not show important variations, although it increased significantly from conventionally tilled to 10…
The intensity of agro-food trade between the countries of the Mediterranean basin
2012
The Mediterranean has always been an area of strategic interest for the European Union (EU), since its establishment, has woven with his partners of the South and East of the Mediterranean a dense network of relationships, by signing agreements cooperation, first, and association, then. The study aims to present an evolutionary picture of the agro-food trade network between the countries of the EU's Mediterranean partners and his neighbours in North Africa and the Near East. Using specific indicators, widely used in the economic literature that analyse trade in sectors, however, different from the agro-food, to measure the intensity of the trade. In particular, the analysis by the applicati…
AGRI-FOOD TRADE INTENSITY IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SCENARIO
2013
In recent years, a political, economic, commercial, social and cultural dialogue get intensified among the Mediterranean countries. In particular, the establishment in 2008 of the Union for the Mediterranean, under the impulse of the French Presidency, represents the last act of the Euro-Mediterranean integration process, that binds more strongly the EU and Mediterranean countries, in particular those of the Southern and Eastern shores. The agriculture is an economic activity of great interest in the Mediterranean area due to the weight of employment and the contribution to the richness it brings to certain countries. In this work we analyze the intensity of agri-food trade among the EU Med…
Reducing Air Pollutants through Road Innovative Intersections
2013
Road pollutant emissions are correlated mainly to infrastructural capacity and to traffic intensity and typology. With the aim to improve road intersections performances in the last years was designed many new geometric layouts, like turbo roundabouts and flower roundabouts. The main objective of this paper is carried out a comparative analysis between conventional and innovative roundabouts in terms of CO, CO2, NO and PM2,5 vehicular emissions, evaluated by means of COPERT Software which is developed as a European tool for the calculation of emissions from the road transport sector.
[Non-invasive trans-cranial magnetic resonance imaging-guided focused ultrasounds surgery to treat neurologic disorders]
2016
In past years non-invasive clinical applications of magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound for t…
Photosynthesis in Lichen: Light Reactions and Protective Mechanisms
2012
Lichens are symbiotic associations (holobionts) established between fungi (mycobionts) and certain groups of cyanobacteria or unicellular green algae (photobionts). This symbiotic association has been essential in establishing the colonization of terrestrial and consequently dry habitats. About 44 genera of algae and cyanobacteria have been reported as lichen photobionts. Due to the uncertain taxonomy of many of these photobionts, these numbers were considered as approximations only. Ahmadjian (1993) estimates that only 25 genera were typical lichen photobionts. The most common cyanobionts are Nostoc, Scytonema, Stigonema, Gloeocapsa, and Calothrix, in order of frequency (Budel, 1992). Gree…
Analysing longitudinal turbulence intensity in vegetated channels
2007
Vegetation altering hydrodynamic conditions of an open channel flow controls the exchanges of sediment, nutrients and contaminants. In this paper the turbulence structure of open-channel flow over a flexible grass vegetation is investigated. Velocity measurements were carried out, in a rectangular flume, using a 2D-ADV (Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter) for different values of stem concentration, water discharge, and bed slope. The experimental results showed that: 1) the maximum value of the longitudinal turbulence intensity occurs at a water depth close to the bent vegetation height; 2) the turbulence intensity damps for increasing values of the stem concentration; 3) above the vegetation hei…
