Post-initiation modulating effects of allyl sulfides in rat hepatocarcinogenesis

Effects of administration of diallyl sulfide (DAS) and diallyl disulfide (DADS) on the promotion stage of hepatocarcinogenesis were investigated in rats using the Ito model. They were compared with those of phenobarbital (PB), a well-known liver promoter in rats. Initiation was induced by a single dose of N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) and 3 weeks later, a partial hepatectomy was conducted. Two weeks after the NDEA injection, rats received either 0.05% allyl sulfides, PB or both in their diet for 8 weeks. Feeding with DAS increased the number of liver preneoplastic foci by 63% with respect to the untreated group. However, rats fed DAS showed a lower foci development than rats fed PB. The DADS…

Echinostoma caproni: Differential tegumental responses to growth in compatible and less compatible hosts

Abstract The topography of the tegument of Echinostoma caproni adults collected from high (mice) and low (rats) compatible hosts was compared by SEM. In the oral (OS) and the ventral sucker (VS) areas, a worm age–host species interaction was found with regard to the density of spines. There was a decrease in the density of spines in the adults collected from mice, whereas an increase occurred in the OS area in worms from rats over time. The tegumentary spines in adults from mice became larger and blunter. Some spines from the VS area in adults from mice at 4 wpi were multipointed. Food and host-preference relies on genetic adaptation and sensory experience. In vertebrates, experience with food-related cues during early development can change adult preference. Coinfection patterns of two marine apicomplexans are not associated with genetic diversity of their polychaete host.

Coinfections of two or more parasites within one host are more of a rule than an exception in nature. Interactions between coinfecting parasites can greatly affect their abundance and prevalence. Characteristics of the host, such as genetic diversity, can also affect the infection dynamics of coinfecting parasites. Summary Self-assembly of block copolymers into well-defined, ordered arrangements of chemically distinct domains is a reliable strategy for preparing tailored nanostructures. Microphase separation results from the system, minimizing repulsive interactions between dissimilar blocks and maximizing attractive interactions between similar blocks. Development and evaluation of occlusive systems employing polyvinyl alcohol for transdermal delivery of sumatriptan succinate

The aim of the present study was to develop a sumatriptan succinate transdermal system for applying migraine treatments efficiently and easily. For this system polyvinyl alcohol was employed as a matrix and Azone((R)) was added as a permeability enhancer. The physical characteristics, mechanical properties, and in vivo bioadhesion of the systems were evaluated, as was in vitro permeation across porcine skin. A uniform distribution of the drug in the matrix was observed, and moisture uptake values were constant.
