At the temporary-permanent interface: Overcoming knowledge boundaries with boundary objects

2021

Abstract There is no shortage of literature on managing complex projects. However, we lack an understanding of projects in which the complexity goes beyond technical, financial and time-related challenges. We report on two Nordic business school accreditation projects, where the major management challenge is the knowledge boundaries institutionalized deep into the ethos of the schools. We focus on the project team’s use of boundary objects – a communication device across social groups – to expose and overcome knowledge boundaries materializing at temporary-permanent interface. We identify three progressively more challenging boundary object uses: informative, interactive and integrative. Co…

On Human–Computer Interaction in Brain–Computer Interfaces

2014

In this chapter, theoretical reflections on human–computer interaction in brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) are combined with the results of an empirical investigation concerning non-invasive EEG-based BCI users’ experiences with this technology. After a short overview of transhumanist visions in the field of neurotechnology this text discusses some anthropological positions concerning interaction between man and technical devices. The focus will be on the concept of “transparency”. Then some empirical results of a pilot study which investigated BCI users’ experiences concerning human–computer interaction in BCI use are presented and discussed against the anthropological background.

Optimization of Cultural Heritage Virtual Environments for Gaming Applications

2020

Serious games are games with a purpose beyond entertainment and are widely acknowledged as fruitful tools for learning and developing skills across multiple domains, including educational enhancement. In the last few years, the world of serious games has widely increased. The use of these types of games can aid in classrooms to not only help the students learn concepts but also to improve their motivation to do so. However, designing games necessitates very specialized personnel and the process can often be costly and slow. The adaptions of the design to the implantation phase are also difficult and the process needs more focus. The challenge of this study was to create a game within the co…

Usable Interface Design for Everyone

2011

Investigating how user avatar in touchless interfaces affects perceived cognitive load and two-handed interactions

2017

In recent years, touchless-enabling technologies have been more and more adopted for providing public displays with gestural interactivity. This has led to the need for novel visual interfaces aimed at solving issues such as communicating interactivity to users, as well as supporting immediate usability and "natural" interactions. In this paper, we focus our investigation on a visual interface based only on the use of in-air direct manipulations. Our study aims at evaluating whether and how the presence of an Avatar that replays user's movements may decrease the perceived cognitive workload during interactions. Moreover, we conducted a brief evaluation of the relationship between the presen…

Inter-Element Crack Propagation with High-Order Stress Equilibrium Element

2021

The present contribution proposes a formulation based on the use of hybrid equilibrium elements (HEEs), for the analysis of inter-element delamination and fracture propagation problems. HEEs are defined in terms of quadratic stress fields, which strongly verify both the homogeneous and inter-element equilibrium equations and they are employed with interfaces, initially exhibiting rigid behavior, embedded at the elements’ sides. The interface model is formulated in terms of the same degrees of freedom of the HEE, without any additional burden. The cohesive zone model (CZM) of the extrinsic interface is rigorously developed in the damage mechanics framework, with perfect adhesion at the pre-…

Miniature magnetic devices for laser-based, table-top free-electron lasers

2007

Truly table-top sized radiation sources based on compact laser-plasma accelerators require compact and strong focusing devices and efficient short-period undulators. Complementing our recent theoretical work on the feasibility of a table-top FEL, we here present the design and successful experimental characterizations of a 5 mm period length undulator and miniature quadrupole magnets with field gradients of the order of $500\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{T}/\mathrm{m}$.

Design and Characterization of a New MV PLC Coupler for Smart Electric Energy Systems

2018

This paper deals with the design, modeling and characterization of a new coupling system for medium voltage (MV) narrow band power line communications (NB-PLC). It exploits the capacitive divider of voltage detecting systems (VDSs) normally used to reveal the mains voltage presence, thus avoiding the use of dedicated MV couplers. The proposed coupling system was patented by the authors. In this paper, the modeling of the VDS capacitive divider is presented, using a proper characterization method. Moreover, the interface card design is described, based on simulation of the whole PLC transmission channel. Laboratory tests are also presented and discussed. More in detail, a frequency response …

Metamodeling editor as a front end tool for a CASE shell

1992

Customizable Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tools, often called CASE shells, are penetrating in the market. CASE shells provide a flexible environment to support a variety of information systems development methods. CASE shells are often cumbersome to use and in practice few people can model and implement methods in them. To overcome these problems we have developed a graphical metamodeling environment called MetaEdit and a method modeling interface to the CASE shell RAMATIC. Using this interface the methodology engineer can develop graphical models in RAMATIC's model definition language and then easily generate the resource files that control the operations of RAMATIC. MetaEdit…

The iconic interface for the PIctorial C language

2003

Iconic environments intend to provide expressive tools to implement, to debug and to execute programs. Moreover its pictorial constructs guide the user to design algorithms in an interactive fashion. Visual interfaces are especially required whenever programs run on an heterogeneous and reconfigurable multiprocessor system oriented to image analysis. Pictorial tools help the user to control the scope of variables, and the distribution of the tasks into the processors. In this paper, the general design, the visual-syntax, and the implementation of the first prototype of an iconic user interface for the PIctorial C Language (PICL) are described. >
