Coherence loss in phase-referenced VLBI observations (Corrigendum)

2011

fat = K ν √ Δt sin θ, (2) where K ∼ 0.012 h0.5 GHz−1. This new equation implies a different value of the constant k1 in Eq. (4). The original value reported for k1 was ∼63, while the correct value is ∼1.3 × 104. Although Eq. (3) (together with the constants K and k1) was incorrectly written in the text, we emphasize that all the figures in the paper were generated, indeed, using the correct equations and constants.

Quantum Spin Dynamics of Mode-Squeezed Luttinger Liquids in Two-Component Atomic Gases

2007

We report on the observation of the phase dynamics of interacting one-dimensional ultracold bosonic gases with two internal degrees of freedom. By controlling the non-linear atomic interactions close to a Feshbach resonance we are able to induce a phase diffusive many-body spin dynamics. We monitor this dynamical evolution by Ramsey interferometry, supplemented by a novel, many-body echo technique. We find that the time evolution of the system is well described by a Luttinger liquid initially prepared in a multimode squeezed state. Our approach allows us to probe the non-equilibrium evolution of one-dimensional many-body quantum systems.

The atmospheric structure and fundamental parameters of Red Supergiants

2013

We present studies of the atmospheric structure and fundamental properties of the red supergiants (RSGs) VY CMa, AH Sco, UY Sct, and KW Sgr based on near-infrared K -band interferometry obtained with the VLTI/AMBER instrument with a spectral resolution of 1500. In our visibility data, we observe the presence of molecular layers of water and CO in extended atmospheres. For a uniform disk modeling, we observe size increases in the water band centered at 1.9 μ m and in the CO band at 2.3–2.5 μ m, with respect to the near-continuum bandpass (2.20–2.25 μ m). With our spectral resolution, we obtain diameters in the near-continuum, that are free from contamination by molecular layers. Using PHOENI…

A study of free convection in air around horizontal cylinders of different diameters based on holographic interferometry. Temperature field equations…

2002

Abstract Holographic interferometry is used to study free convection in air around horizontal cylinders of different diameters and equal length, involving different surface temperatures, with the aim of defining the corresponding temperature fields. Interferograms were obtained to determine the temperature (T) of each point as well as its distance (x) from the surface of the cylinder. These values in turn made it possible to define functions (of an exponential nature in our case), T=f(x), that satisfactorily reproduced the temperature fields. Posteriorly, these functions were used to calculate the local convection coefficients, determining their dependency upon temperature and the direction…

VLBI imaging of M81* at 43GHz

2011

The nearby spiral galaxy M81 harbors in its core a Low-Luminosity AGN (LLAGN), and appears closely related to the more distant and powerful AGNs seen in quasars and radio galaxies. The intrinsic size of this object is unknown due to scattering, and it has shown a core-jet morphology with weak extended emission rotating with wavelength. The proximity of M\,81 (D=3.63 Mpc) allows a detailed investigation of its nucleus to be made. The nucleus is four orders of magnitude more luminous than the Galactic centre, and is therefore considered a link between SgrA* and the more powerful nuclei of radio galaxies and quasars. Our main goal was to determine the size of M81* at a shorter wavelength thus …

A Kapitza-Dirac-Talbot-Lau interferometer for highly polarizable molecules

2007

Research on matter waves is a thriving field of quantum physics and has recently stimulated many investigations with electrons, neutrons, atoms, Bose-condensed ensembles, cold clusters and hot molecules. Coherence experiments with complex objects are of interest for exploring the transition to classical physics, for measuring molecular properties and they have even been proposed for testing new models of space-time. For matter-wave experiments with complex molecules, the strongly dispersive effect of the interaction between the diffracted molecule and the grating wall is a major challenge because it imposes enormous constraints on the velocity selection of the molecular beam. We here descri…

Compressive holography with a single-pixel detector.

2013

This Letter develops a framework for digital holography at optical wavelengths by merging phase-shifting interferometry with single-pixel optical imaging based on compressive sensing. The field diffracted by an input object is sampled by Hadamard patterns with a liquid crystal spatial light modulator. The concept of a single-pixel camera is then adapted to perform interferometric imaging of the sampled diffraction pattern by using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Phase-shifting techniques together with the application of a backward light propagation algorithm allow the complex amplitude of the object under scrutiny to be resolved. A proof-of-concept experiment evaluating the phase distributio…

Displacement Measurement Through Digital Image Correlation and Digital Speckle Pattern Interferometry Techniques in Cold-Expanded Holes

2010

:  In this paper, the displacement field induced by the split-sleeve cold expansion of holes was measured using both digital image correlation (DIC) and digital speckle pattern interferometry (DSPI) techniques. Thus, the experimental results, which were evaluated on the inlet surface of a 6082-T6 aluminium plate, were compared with those from theoretical prediction. DIC provided accurate measurements up to the elastic–plastic boundary, whereas the DSPI technique highlighted the changes of displacement in the elastic domain. Prediction of the displacement based on the existing analytical model agreed with the experimental results achieved with both techniques. Possible explanations for the d…

Integrated InGaAlAs/InP laser-modulator using an identical multiple quantum well active layer

2005

We present experimental results on 40 Gb/s large-signal modulation performance of 1.31 μm monolithic integrated laser-modulator in the InGaAlAs/InP material system, exploiting the gain and absorption properties of an identical multiple quantum well (MQW) active layer. In continuous wave operation, at 15◦ C, the devices achieved threshold currents < 28 mA, fiber coupled optical power levels up to +0.4 dBm. The measured small signal modulation bandwidth was about 32 GHz. An air-cavity based Fabry-Perot interferometer has been realized to characterize the spectral chirp of the integrated structures in the time domain up to 40 Gb/s.

Coherence loss in phase-referenced VLBI observations

2010

Context. Phase-referencing is a standard calibration technique in radio interferometry, particularly suited for the detection of weak sources close to the sensitivity limits of the interferometers. However, effects from a changing atmosphere and inaccuracies in the correlator model may affect the phase-referenced images, and lead to wrong estimates of source flux densities and positions. A systematic observational study of signal decoherence in phase-referencing and its effects in the image plane has not been performed yet. Aims. We systematically studied how the signal coherence in Very-Long-Baseline-Interferometry (VLBI) observations is affected by a phase-reference calibration at differe…
