VLBI detection of the HST-1 feature in the M87 jet at 2 cm

A bright feature 80 pc away from the core in the powerful jet of M87 shows highly unusual properties. Earlier radio, optical and X-ray observations have shown that this feature, labeled HST-1, is superluminal, and is possibly connected with the TeV flare detected by HESS in 2005. It has been claimed that this feature might have a blazar nature, due to these properties. To examine the possible blazar-like nature of HST-1, we analyzed lambda 2 cm VLBA archival data from dedicated full-track observations and the 2 cm survey/MOJAVE VLBI monitoring programs obtained between 2000 and 2009. Jet-torus connection in radio galaxies

High-resolution Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry observations of active galactic nuclei have revealed asymmetric structures in the jets of radio galaxies. These asymmetric structures may be due to internal asymmetries in the jet, could be induced by the different conditions in the surrounding ambient medium including the obscuring torus, or a combination of the two. In this paper we investigate the influence of the ambient medium (including the obscuring torus) on the observed properties of jets from radio galaxies. Evaluation of the practicality of optical biometry and applanation ultrasound in 253 eyes

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the percentage of eyes that could not be measured using optical biometry and ultrasound applanation and the reasons. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University Hospital, Mainz, Germany. Methods Optical biometry (IOLMaster®, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG) and A-scan ultrasound biometry were performed consecutively in 253 eyes scheduled for cataract surgery the next day. Reproducibility of optical biometry using partial coherence interferometry: intraobserver and interobserver reliability

Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the intraobserver and interobserver variability in axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and corneal radius measurements using an optical biometry instrument based on partial coherence interferometry (PCI). Setting: Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany. Methods: In this observational case series and interobserver reliability trial, 30 healthy, emmetropic to moderately myopic eyes of 15 volunteers were evaluated. International audience; We study, with numerical simulations using the generalized nonlinear envelope equation, the processes of optical parametric and difference- and sum-frequency generation (SFG) with incoherent pumps in optical media with both quadratic and third-order nonlinearity, such as periodically poled lithium niobate. With ultrabroadband amplified spontaneous emission pumps or continua (spectral widths > 10 THz), group-velocity matching of a near-IR pump and a short-wavelength mid-IR (MIR) idler in optical parametric generation may lead to more than 15-fold relative spectral narrowing of the generated MIR signal. We have carried out a high-precision astrometric analysis of two very-long-baseline-interferometry (VLBI) epochs of observation of the 13 extragalactic radio sources in the complete S5 polar cap sample. The VLBI epochs span a time baseline of ten years and enable us to achieve precisions in the proper motions of the source cores up to a few micro-arcseconds per year. The observations were performed at 14.4 GHz and 43.1 GHz, and enable us to estimate the frequency core-shifts in a subset of sources, for which the spectral-index distributions can be computed. The gamma-ray emitting radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 2004-447 I. The X-ray View

As part of the TANAMI multiwavelength progam, we discuss new X-ray observations of the $\gamma$-ray and radio-loud Narrow Line Seyfert galaxy ($\gamma$-NLS1) PKS 2004-447. The active galaxy is a member of a small sample of radio-loud NLS1s detected in $\gamma$-rays by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. It is the radio-loudest and only southern-hemisphere source in this sample. We present results from our X-ray monitoring program comprised of Swift snapshot observations from 2012 through 2014 and two new X-ray observations with XMM-Newton in 2012.
