Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) serves as one of the common geodetic methods to define the global reference frames and monitor Earth's orientation variations. The technical upgrade of the VLBI method known as the VLBI Global Observing System (VGOS) includes a critical re-design of the observed frequencies from the dual band mode (S and X band, i.e. 2 GHz and 8 GHz) to observations in a broadband (2 – 14 GHz). Retrieval of vegetation height in rice fields using polarimetric SAR interferometry with TanDEM-X data

This work presents for the first time a demonstration with satellite data of polarimetric SAR interferometry (PolInSAR) applied to the retrieval of vegetation height in rice fields. Three series of dual-pol interferometric SAR data acquired with large baselines (2–3 km) by the TanDEM-X system during its science phase (April–September 2015) are exploited. A novel inversion algorithm especially suited for rice fields cultivated in flooded soil is proposed and evaluated. Spatial light modulator (SLM) implementation of wavefront encoding enables various types of engineered pointspread functions (PSFs), including the generalized-cubic and squared-cubic phase mask wavefront encoded (WFE) PSFs, shown to reduce the impact of sample-induced spherical aberration in fluorescence microscopy. This investigation validates dynamic experimental parameter variation of these WFE-PSFs. The stability of the tear film plays an important role in the optical quality of the eye. Various methods have been developed to quantify the contribution of the tear film to optical quality, including the double-pass optical method, Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensing, videokeratoscopy, retroillumination analysis, and interferometry. In addition to assessing the effect of tear film irregularities, these methods can aid in the diagnosis of dry-eye related conditions and the monitoring of therapy. Abstract Two weak stretching bands, ν 1 + 3 ν 3 and 3 ν 1 + ν 3 , of the sulfur dioxide molecule have been recorded at high resolution and analyzed for the first time with using a Fourier transform Bruker IFS-120 HR interferometer. About 1000 transitions with J max . = 51, K a max . = 16 , and 900 transitions with J max . = 53, K a max . = 16 have been assigned to the bands ν 1 + 3 ν 3 and 3 ν 1 + ν 3 , respectively. Analysis of the recorded spectra was made using the model of isolated vibrational states. Parameters obtained from the fit reproduce the initial experimental ro-vibrational energies with the rms deviation of 0.0006 and 0.0012 cm −1 for the bands, 3 ν 1 + ν 3 and ν 1 …
Background-free nonlinear Raman microscopy and spectroscopy at interfaces

Gaussian focused beams exhibit specific properties that drive the emitted fields in nonlinear optical microscopy. We discuss here how the basic field and object symmetry properties can be favorably used to obtain background-free images and spectra in third-order nonlinear optical processes. We concentrate here on coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), the non-linear analogue of Raman scattering. In CARS microscopy, the vibrational related (“resonant”) signal is often overwhelmed by an electronic related (“nonresonant”) background. Residual Phase Noise Measurement of Optical Second Harmonic Generation in PPLN Waveguides

We report on the characterization, including residual phase noise and fractional frequency instability, of fiber-coupled PPLN non-linear crystals. These components are devoted to frequency doubling 871 nm light from an extended-cavity diode laser to produce a 435.5 nm beam, corresponding to the ytterbium ion electric quadrupole clock transition. We measure doubling efficiencies of up to 117.5 %/W. Using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and an original noise rejection technique, the residual phase noise of the doublers is estimated to be lower than ${\rm -35\, dBrad^2/Hz}$ at 1 Hz, making these modules compatible with up-to-date optical clocks and ultra-stable cavities. Refractive indices and refractive index increments of the system polystyrene/trans-decalin were measured under pressures up to 500 bar and at temperatures between 20 and 60°C. The measurements were performed with a new, recently designed interferometer. The results demonstrate a sufficient agreement of the refractive index values measured at different temperatures and pressures with the equations of Eykman and Gladstone-Dale whereas the Lorenz-Lorentz equation indicates larger deviations.
